The medical journal BMJ published a report today that links a lower risk of early death to higher levels of physical activity at any intensity in middle-aged and older people.Previous studies have repeatedly suggested that any type of sedentary behavior, such as sitting still, is not good for your health. Being sedentary for 9.5 hours or more a day, excluding sleeping time, is associated with an increased risk of death.Led by Prof. Ulf Ekelund of the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences located in Oslo, Norway, researchers analyzed studies that assessed how physical activity and sedentary time were linked with risk of an early death.Using accelerometers -- a wearable device that tracks the volume and intensity of activity -- to measure total activity, intensity levels were separated into categories of light, moderate and vigorous.Cooking or washing dishes were examples of light intensity, brisk walking or mowing the lawn were considered moderate intensity, and jogging or carrying heavy loads were used as examples of vigorous intensity. The risk of death for participants was approximately five times higher for those who were inactive compared to those who were the most active, according to the researchers. The study was conducted in the United States and Western Europe on 36,383 adults who were at least 40 years old with an average age of 62. Participants were tracked over an average of 5.8 years. However, the findings in the study may not apply to other populations and younger people. At least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week are recommended guidelines, 1642

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly shooting early Monday morning at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay.Deputies say just before midnight, two men got into an argument in the parking lot outside the mosque during a Ramadan event attended by several hundred people. At some point during the argument, one of the men fired at the other. An off-duty deputy, who had just finished working security detail at the event, heard the gun shots and rushed to the parking lot.The Sheriff's Office reports the deputy found one man holding a gun and another man who had been shot at least two times. The deputy detained the suspect shooter until additional units arrived on scene.Paramedics rushed the victim to Tampa General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.Authorities say the public is not in danger. They believe the two men knew one other and were both attending prayer services at the mosque.Homicide detectives are interviewing the shooter who is cooperating. They want to determine the nature of the argument and whether the shooting could be classified as self defense. No charges have been filed. The Sheriff's Office says there is no indication the shooting is in any way related to a terror attack and only appears to be a dispute between the two people involved. 1309

The Democratic candidates ganged up on former Vice President Joe Biden as the second presidential debate turned to immigration on Wednesday night, leaving Biden taking shots from all sides while defending his record. When the debate shifted to immigration, it was former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro who criticized Biden's record during the Obama administration, and sought to turn it into an argument that it is time for new leadership.Moderators noted that 800,000 immigrants were deported during the first two years of the Obama administration, and asked the former vice president whether those deportations would continue if he was president. Biden said they would not, and went on to note that he and Castro had been in many meetings together when he never raised his current position about opening the borders."We sat together in many meetings, I never heard him talk about any of this when he was the secretary," Biden said."It looks like one of us has learned from the lessons of the past and one of us hasn't," Castro snapped back.Castro later said, "There's still going to be consequences if somebody crosses the border. It's a civil action. Also we have 654 miles of fencing. We have thousands of personnel at the border. We have planes, we have boats, helicopters, we have security cameras. ... We need to have some guts on this issue."The stage showed off the diversity of the Democratic field and also the generational differences among the candidates. California Sen. Kamala Harris and Booker, for example, have argued for a new generation of leaders who better reflect the diversity of the Democratic Party. Also on the stage on Wednesday were Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, Castro, de Blasio, Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and businessman Andrew Yang.Biden under the microscopeBiden knew he would be a target early on in the debate."Go easy on me, kid," he said to Harris as 1984

The death of Luke Perry, after the actor suffered what his publicist said was a massive stroke, is evidence that the disease can affect people of any age, the American Heart Association said.Perry, who starred in "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Riverdale," died Monday. He was 52."Although stroke often affects older individuals, it is not only a disease of the elderly," said Mitchell S. V. Elkind, chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee. "There is evidence that stroke rates among young people are increasing in the United States and this requires additional research."A 601

The maker of Miller Lite and Coors Light doesn't see the funny side of Bud Light's corn syrup Super Bowl ads.MillerCoors filed suit against Anheuser-Busch, the brewer of Bud Light, over the commercials, which it says are "false and misleading." It wants them blocked and its rival to set the record straight.Bud Light's ads during Super Bowl LIII touted the fact that the beer is sweetened with rice rather than corn syrup. And they took jabs at its competitors. In the first ad, the Bud Light King, Bud Knight and others are trying to figure out what to do with a corn syrup barrel that was delivered to them by mistake. They set out to the Miller Lite castle to see if the barrel belongs there, but the castle had already received its delivery of corn syrup. Finally, they make it to the Coors Light castle whose occupants have been looking for their corn syrup barrel.MillerCoors said in Thursday's lawsuit that Anheuser-Busch "plotted an extensive and pervasive advertising scheme designed to frighten consumers into switching away from Miller Lite and Coors Light to Bud Light." It accused Anheuser-Busch of using corn syrup as a fermentation aid in drinks such as Stella Artois Cidre and Bud Ice.MillerCoors said it never uses high fructose corn syrup, which it says is different from corn syrup. But it alleged that Anheuser-Busch uses high fructose corn syrup in some of its drinks such as Rita's Berry-A-Rita.The American Heart Association recommends that people limit the amount of sugar and added sugar, such as high fructose corn syrup and honey, that they consume because too much of it 1611
