SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System and North County Transit District will host the region's third "Free Ride Day" Tuesday, making all fixed-route bus and rail services free for everyone to use throughout San Diego County, ensuring residents are able to reach their polling place and exercise their right to vote."Free Ride Day this year has a different purpose than in past years," said Nathan Fletcher, MTS Board Chair and San Diego County Supervisor. "We are holding it on one of the most important days for our country -- Election Day. We want San Diego residents to have every opportunity to participate in our democracy. Free transit rides all day long will help do just that."Free rides will be honored on all MTS and NCTD fixed-routes services including buses, the trolley, Sprinter and Coaster. MTS and NCTD services will operate on a normal weekday schedule.Passengers will not need a Compass Card or valid fare for either system, but face coverings will continue to be required on board all MTS and NCTD vehicles and at transit facilities. These rides will help bridge the gap between where people live and where they can cast their vote on November 3."According to the transit agencies, one reason for hosting Free Ride Day on Election Day is that transit can help bridge the gap between where a voter lives and where they need to vote.The San Diego County Registrar of Voters will have fewer polling places than in prior elections, so many voters will be required to drop off or cast their ballot at a different location than they did for the primary election in March. There will be 235 "Super Poll" locations, down from approximately 1,600 polling locations during the primary."Free Ride Day coinciding with Election Day elevates access for all of our San Diego voters to get to their assigned polling place," said Michael Vu, Registrar of Voters. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Target Corp. has agreed to pay .4 million to resolve allegations that it violated terms of a 2011 judgment regarding the company's handling and disposal of retail hazardous waste, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced Wednesday.``This settlement holds Target accountable for this second violation of environmental laws that involve the improper disposal of a long list of hazardous materials,'' Stephan said. ``This case serves as a reminder to corporations of the importance of environmental protection laws that safeguard the public's health and that violators will be held accountable.''The current settlement -- announced by Stephan, 21 other California district attorneys, the California Attorney General's Office and the city attorneys of San Diego and Los Angeles -- comes as a result of investigations that concluded the company committed violations by improperly disposing hazardous waste into landfills across California between 2012 and 2016. The waste included such items as electronics, batteries, aerosol cans, compact fluorescent light bulbs and medical waste, including syringes, over-the-counter and prescribed pharmaceuticals, as well as confidential medical information from its customers.``We are confident that with these strong injunctive terms and penalties, Target will implement meaningful changes to prevent this from ever happening again,'' said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. ``However, the wise move for all companies is to abide by the law and employ proactive training and processes to help ensure that hazardous waste violations are avoided in the first place.''It's the second settlement resolving allegations of hazardous waste compliance violations by Target. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate urged prosecutors Friday to take a zero-tolerance stance on predatory scams involving fraudulent checks, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic when people may be especially susceptible to fraud.In a letter sent Friday to California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, the councilman suggested removing the possibility of prosecuting Penal Code 476 -- which makes creating or passing a fake check a crime -- as a misdemeanor, increasing the fine amount and maximum jail sentence for those found guilty, and assigning additional Department of Justice resources to investigate check fraud complaints.The councilman wrote that scams in the form of fake check deposits "are becoming widespread in Southern California and are causing our most vulnerable to lost thousands of dollars they cannot afford."Cate said one such fraudulent check was recently received by one of his staff members, which appeared authentic and bore the name of a "legitimate financial institution."He said he worried that with high unemployment rates amid the pandemic, people would be more likely to fall prey to scams of this sort."Taken as a whole, these measures will send a clear message to those who would attempt to prey on the most vulnerable and susceptible in our society that California stands with consumers and will not tolerate this fraudulent conduct," Cate wrote.A copy of Cate's letter, which features examples of a fraudulent check and typical accompanying letter from a supposedly legitimate company, can be viewed at https://www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/predatory_check_scam_enforcement.pdf. 1650

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Scorching heat is expected everywhere except the coast in San Diego County Friday and a brutal stretch of temperatures is not expected to relent until the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.Building high pressure over the southwestern United States will usher in scorching temperatures for the next five to six days, with the peak of the heat expected Friday through Monday, forecasters said.The NWS issued an excessive heat warning that will be in effect from noon Friday to 9 p.m. Monday in the county valleys, mountains and deserts.LATEST 10NEWS WEATHER FORECASTThe NWS urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. The mercury in the western valleys is forecast to top out in the low-to-mid 90s through Wednesday as well, while highs near the foothills will remain in the mid-to-high 90s through at least Thursday.Borrego Springs set a high temperature record on Thursday, according to the NWS. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting Wednesday, Southwest Airlines is providing daily, nonstop service from San Diego International Airport to Honolulu.The inaugural flight departed at 8 a.m. from San Diego to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii."We've been anticipating this route for many months and welcome Southwest's new daily service to Honolulu," San Diego County Regional Airport Authority President and CEO Kimberly Becker said."There has always been high demand for leisure travel to both San Diego and Honolulu and, with a military presence in each city, a desire to visit friends and family," she said.
