PYONGYANG, May 9 (Xinhua) -- The Rodong Sinmun, a leading newspaper of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), hailed the recent successful visit to China by top leader Kim Jong Il in an editorial published Sunday.The editorial said that the people of the DPRK are "very glad and excited" about the visit. It is a "meaningful opportunity" to strengthen the friendship between the two parties and the leaders of the two countries.The article also indicated that the DPRK will make efforts to further strengthen the traditional DPRK-China friendship.Both countries shared the view that peace, stability and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula are in the common interests of the two countries and other Northeastern Asian nations, the editorial said.The two sides will make joint efforts to achieve the objective of denuclearizing the Peninsula on the basis of the Sept. 19 Joint Statement, it added.The editorial also said that the people of the DPRK sincerely wish the Chinese people still greater achievements in their socialist construction and the cause for national reunification.Kim Jong Il made an unofficial visit to China from May 3 to 7. He has visited China for five times since 2000.

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday again called for more diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iran nuclear issue."We hope all the parties to further enhance diplomatic efforts on the Iran nuclear issue," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told a regular press conference.Jiang said China had maintained close contact with all the relevant parties and hoped all the parties would take more pragmatic and positive measures to properly solve the issue.China has always committed itself to safeguarding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, the spokesman said.The United States and its western allies have long accused Iran of secretly developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian program, and currently they are discussing a United Nations resolution to impose sanctions.Iran has denied the accusation and stressed its nuclear program was solely for peaceful purposes.

ISLAMABAD, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese embassy official Tuesday called on an official of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to donate 30,000 U.S. dollars on behalf of the China Red Cross Society (CRCS) to assist the residents affected by the landslide in northern Pakistan early this year.Muhammad Ilyas Khan, PRCS secretary general, asked Yao Jing, counselor of the Chinese embassy to Pakistan, to convey his appreciation to the CRCS for its generous donation to Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan due to the landslide in January, 2010.He said that Chinese friends always extend assistance to Pakistan in difficult times and Pakistan is proud of its friendship with China.At present, the local government and PRCS are working hard to provide relief to the villages. The government is also trying to control the damage and tackle with the challenge caused by the lake in the area.On January 4, a serious landslide occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan and formed a huge barrier lake. The slide blocked over 20,000 local residents in Upper Hunza from outside. The Pakistani government is conducting the rescue and relief work . On January 19, at the request of the Pakistani government, the Chinese side made special arrangements to open the Kunjirap border and facilitate the purchase of relief goods from China and its clearance.The China Road and Bridge Corporation, which is conducting the project of upgradation of the Karakoram Highway, has also provided engineering consultations and equipment to help the Pakistani side to deal with the problem.

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States should keep up communication and consultation on issues concerning each other's major interests such as the Iran nuclear issue and the Korean nuclear issue.Ma Zhaoxu, spokesman of the Chinese delegation attending the strategic track of the on-going second round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues (S&ED), made the remarks at a press briefing after the first meeting of the strategic track on Monday."The two countries should also enhance consultation and cooperation on counter-terrorism, non-proliferation and the fight against cross-border crimes," Ma said.On Monday afternoon, officials from China and the United States held two rounds of meetings, during the second half of which they discussed how to strengthen cooperation on major international and regional issues, and cooperation on international system reform and Asia-Pacific regional cooperation mechanism building."The S&ED, as an important platform, provides the two sides a good channel to discuss and consider cooperation in this regard," Ma said.Ma told the press the other four suggestions China proposed for further enhancing bilateral cooperation, including:-- To give full respect and consideration to each other's major interests and concerns while carrying out cooperation;-- To follow the globally-recognized rules guiding international relations, and peacefully resolve regional hot issues through dialogue and negotiation;-- To deal with disputes with an objective and calm attitude, and not to let the overall situation of China-U.S. cooperation deteriorate due to temporary difficulties;-- To expand cooperation, especially communication and consultation in such areas as climate change and energy security, so as to benefit the two countries and the world as a whole.He said mutual understanding and trust between the two countries had increased after the past rounds of strategic dialogues.
