SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Evacuees at MCAS Miramar have circulated a petition at the base after a coronavirus patient was mistakenly reintroduced to those under quarantine.The petition, which begins by thanking the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suggests several actions be taken at Miramar to mitigate the potential spread of the virus.Samples from three patients brought to UC San Diego Medical Center were not labeled consistently with CDC regulations, leading to results being returned as negative, when in reality, the samples were not tested.RELATED: Mislabeled sample led to release of COVID-19 patientOne of those patients ended up testing positive for coronavirus. She was placed under self-isolation at the base before being brought back to the hospital.The petition:Following the confusion, a petition — written in both English and Chinese by an unknown author — suggested several precautions be taken in the future:"Everyone in the facility be tested;Preventing the gathering of large numbers of people into small, enclosed environments. The alternatives we suggest are the following:In room temperature taking in the morning;Meals delivered to the door;Townhalls through conference calls;Periodic delivery of personal protective gear to each room including masks and sanitizing alcohol for in room disinfection;Provision of hand sanitizer at the front desk and in the playground; andDisinfection of public areas 2-3 times/day including playground, laundry room, door knobs, etc."The petition adds that, "CDC’s current working assumption is the virus won’t spread until symptoms develop. However, we strongly disagree with using that assumption as the basis against broader testing ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of families and children with down syndrome were out at Crown Point Park in Pacific Beach for the first-ever Donut Run in San Diego. The money raised benefits Gigi's Playhouse which is a down syndrome achievement center. The center provides therapeutic and training programs for people of all ages. The services are completely free. Gigi's Playhouse has 37 locations across the country and even a few in Mexico. All of the staff are volunteers so donations are always welcome in order to continue providing the services. The goal was to raise ,000 but the organization doubled that goal.   667

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Design plans were approved Wednesday for the permanent structure that will replace a newly constructed temporary homeless shelter in downtown San Diego.Designs for the downtown affordable housing project at Father Joe's Village campus were approved Wednesday by the Civic San Diego planning group.
