WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health officials are unveiling a plan to get approved coronavirus shots to nursing home residents free of cost, with the aid of two national pharmacy chains. No vaccine has yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and the distribution program is contingent on that happening first. Trained staff from CVS and Walgreens will deliver the vaccines to each nursing home and administer shots. Assisted-living facilities and residential group homes can also participate in the voluntary program. Nursing home staffers can be vaccinated too, if they haven’t gotten their shots already. The idea is to give hard-pressed states an all-inclusive system for vaccinating their most vulnerable residents, said Paul Mango, a senior policy adviser at the Department of Health and Human Services. “We are trying to eliminate all potential barriers to getting folks safe and effective vaccines,” Mango said.People in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities account for less than 1% of the U.S. population, but they represent about 40% of the deaths from COVID-19, with more than 83,600 fatalities logged by the COVID Tracking Project.Needles, syringes and other necessary equipment will be included. 1240
WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has unsealed charges against a Libyan bombmaker in the December 21, 1988 explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The attack killed 259 people in the air and an additional 11 on the ground in the town of Lockerbie. The flight was leaving London's Heathrow International Airport heading to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Most of those onboard were Americans. "There is no question that the Pan Am 103 attack was aimed at the United States. And this heinous assault lives in infamy in the collective memory of the American people," Attorney General William Barr said during a Monday press conference unsealing the charges. Barr unsealed charges against Abu Agila Mohammad Masud, who officials believe is in Libya.Forensic investigators determined plastic explosive had been detonated in the Boeing 747's cargo hold. The charges were announced on the 32nd anniversary of the bombing and in the final news conference of Attorney General Barr’s tenure, underscoring his personal attachment to a case that unfolded during his first stint at the Justice Department under President George H.W. Bush. 1170

VISTA (CNS) - A Vista vodka distillery that shifted its operations to producing hand sanitizer during the coronavirus pandemic announced Tuesday that it will donate a portion of the proceeds to fund COVID-19 research.Misadventure & Co. said 15% of profits generated by its hand sanitizer sales will go to "scientific research institutions, including The National Institutes of Health Foundation, John Hopkins Medical Foundation and University of California San Diego Health Foundation in the name of COVID-19 research and response."In March, the company pivoted operations to manufacturing hand sanitizer after pandemic restrictions prevented patrons from visiting its distillery or tasting room."We are so thankful that we were able to pivot our business and save jobs when the coronavirus first struck. We want to give back by donating to institutions that will help find a vaccine," said co-founder Sam Chereskin."Now just like our sustainable vodka, consumers can feel good about purchasing their hand sanitizer through our website because they know they will support efforts to end this pandemic," he said. ``We call on more companies to join this movement and help donate a portion of their proceeds in a similar manner." 1239
VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A six-year-old Vista boy said he was approached by an unknown man in a car Monday night who asked him if he wanted pizza.Erika Bristow said her son was playing on their driveway when the man drove up and tried to get the boy’s attention.“He definitely realized immediately it wasn’t a safe situation,” Bristow said of her son, who ran inside to tell them about it.Her son has special needs and is normally very friendly, according to Bristow. So over the past year, she and her husband have been reinforcing the “stranger danger” lesson. Earlier this week they said the topic was even addressed during their son’s karate class. After his son told them about what happened, Craig Bristow said he ran out to the driveway to look for the car. He said he saw it up the street parked behind some trees before the driver sped back down the road.He said he caught a look at the car and the driver but was too distracted to take down the license plate.“All those thoughts are coming through your mind. It’s like a parent's worst nightmare,” he said. They called the sheriff’s Ddepartment, which sent out patrols, but they could not locate the car. The Bristows described the vehicle as a new, white Honda Civic hatchback with roof racks and a sunroof. The family said they did not get any pictures of the car and so far have not heard from any of their neighbors if the car was captured on surveillance cameras.Erika Bristow said the incident has shattered her sense of safety on their winding, quiet street in Vista.“One hour I’ll just cry. It’s anger. It’s rage. Earlier today, I wanted to punch a wall, I wanted to scream,” she said.Anyone with information is urged to contact the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. 1742
WASHINGTON (AP) — Contested congressional seats in the nation's suburbs are becoming battlefields, and each party is wielding what it hopes will be a potent weapon. During the pandemic, Democrats are widely returning to the health care theme they used in 2018 to capture House control. In some races, Republicans are promoting the need for law and order after racial justice protests this summer that sometimes turned violent. Even in campaigns where the GOP has chosen a different theme, President Donald Trump's recent focus on law and order can color the debate. Each side has tested its messaging carefully and thinks the other side has chosen a losing issue. 671
