BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's visits to Bangladesh, Laos, New Zealand and Australia had contributed to promoting friendship, mutual trust and cooperation between China and these countries, a senior Chinese official said Thursday.Xi paid official visits to the four nations between June 14 and June 24, meeting with leaders and exchanging views on a wide range of issues, witnessing the signing of a series of bilateral cooperation agreements, addressing business forums and attending cultural activities."The visits boasted great achievements. GUANLING, Guizhou, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged local government to use all resources to rescue victims of a landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province.Rescuers should save the lives of the victims and treat the wounded using all possible means, said Hui during an inspection tour of the disaster-hit area from late Monday to Tuesday.He also called for the utmost efforts to properly resettle people affected by the landslide and sounded caution regarding additional landslides.He said all areas prone to landslides should be examined closely and nearby residents must be evacuated immediately upon any sign of an impending landslide.Further, information about the disaster relief efforts should be made public in a timely, objective, open and transparent manner, said Hui.The landslide occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Dazhai Village, Gangwu Township of Guanling County, burying 107 people from 38 families. Rescuers said their chances of survival were slim.

BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Prosecutors will have to obtain approval from a higher-level prosecutorate before they order arrest warrants for suspects accused of defamation, officials with China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) announced Saturday.The move came only days after police of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province canceled a warrant for Qiu Ziming, a reporter from the Economic Observer News, who was accused of defamation by a publicly-listed company.The quality of handling criminal cases is the "lifeline" of the work in investigating, supervising and examining police applications to arrest persons implicated in a crime, according to a statement issued by the SPP."To issue low-quality or even incorrect arrest warrants not only violates people's legitimate rights, but also severely undermines the credibility of prosecuting authorities and tarnishes the image of the Communist Party of China and the government," it says.China's Criminal Procedural Law delegated different responsibilities to the three branches of the justice system -- the courts, the prosecutors and the police. Before formally issuing an arrest warrant, prosecutors are required to examine police applications and investigations.In Qiu's case, the reporter had been wanted by the police of Suichang after Zhejiang Kan Specialty Material Co., Ltd. (Kan) accused him of defaming the company by reporting fabricated stories.However, police of Lishui City, which administers Suichang, ordered the county's public security bureau to cancel the warrant for Qiu after a review found the warrant failed to meet statutory requirements.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police have launched crackdowns all over China to curb online soccer gambling as the 2010 World Cup kicks off in South Africa.More than 100 people have been detained for participating in online soccer gambling with more than 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) in funds involved in one case in Yuyao City, east China's Zhejiang Province, said Dong Xiaowei, deputy chief of the provincial public security bureau.More than 70 gambling groups have been cracked for online soccer gambling this year with more than 300 arrested, he said.Similar cases have been uncovered in Beijing, Chongqing, Shaanxi, Fujian and Shandong.There are about 2,000 Chinese and offshore websites for soccer gambling in China, and the membership of some websites amounts to one million, according to Public Security Ministry data.Gambling is prohibited on the Chinese mainland by law.
