SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While enjoying a moment at the park over the weekend, a Carlsbad family was on the receiving end of an act of kindness from a stranger. The family says they are now hoping to find that person to say thank you.After months of staying at home, the family was excited to spend a day at Buccaneer Park in Oceanside. Eleven-year-old Jacobi and 12-year-old Jordan couldn’t wait to get outside.“They’re too old of the playground area, the swings and things like that,” says mom Tamara Coronado. “They look forward to the open space, the grass area, and definitely the basketball courts.”But Coronado says park officials had not yet reinstalled the basketball hoops, something the boys were looking forward to. The kids were left to make up their own games. It caught the attention of one man.“Forty-five minutes to an hour later, he came back… with a crafting reef from Dollar Tree and a very small basketball that would fit inside.”The man used a power drill to attach the wreath to a tree to form a makeshift hoop so that the boys could play basketball.“All that he asked was that we leave the wreath and the ball in place so that after we left, other families could use it,” says Coronado. “But the fact that he went out of his way like he did was, I just couldn’t believe it.”The mom says even though a lot is going on around the country, she wants others to know there are still kind people in the world. The family didn’t get the man’s name, but they’re hoping to find him to say thank you.“He may have not thought twice about it, and hasn’t thought about it since, but he really touched me and my family.” 1632

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people working on scaffolding on the side of a downtown high-rise were rescued Tuesday after their equipment became stuck.The two workers were stuck 42 stories in the air after their equipment failed just before 10 a.m., leaving their mobile scaffolding stuck, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.Fire crews climbed to the top floor 46 stories up and were lowered down to the trapped pair. Glass on the 43rd floor of the building was then removed and the workers were hoisted into the building. View this post on Instagram SD Fire-Rescue crews are on scene at a building under construction at 14th and Island. SDFD dispatchers received the request for assistance at about 9:50 Tuesday morning. Two construction workers were on a window washing lift when the lift stopped functioning and the workers were not able to move the lift. USAR 2, engines 2 and 4 and trucks 1 and 11 along with medic 10 responded. The technical rescue team went to the roof and set up the rope system. They lowered down to the construction crew outside the 42nd floor and were able to remove a window on the 43rd floor. The 43rd floor window served as the extraction point. The first construction worker was rescued at 10:52 and the second at 11:01 a.m. The firefighters are now in the process of retrieving their rescue equipment. No injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With the March 2020 Presidential Primary approaching, the San Diego Registrar of Voters is urging everyone to make sure they are registered properly."This one election is the most complex elections for administrators like ourselves and voters that are out there," says Registrar Michael Vu.With six political parties holding presidential primaries, plus the dozens of overlapping state and local district elections, Vu expects to create more than 12,000 unique versions of the ballot. Rules on who can vote in each party make it even more complicated.In December, Vu's office sent out more than 500,000 mailers to voters to make sure they know the options.Anyone registered with a specific party will only be allowed to vote in that party's primary. Republicans will vote for the Republican candidates, Democrats for Democrats and so on.But, right now more then 30 percent of registered voters in San Diego are listed as "No-Party Preference."For those people, they can choose to vote in the primary for American Independent, Democrat, or Libertarian parties. They cannot vote in the Republican, Green, or Peace and Freedom parties."It makes it a little more confusing," says Vu. "Something that voters need to know what political party status they are in. And if it’s different from the presidential candidates they want to vote for, they need to register or re-register now."To help voters navigate their options, the Registrar has set up a website where people can get all the information they need.The deadline to choose a party, or to choose which primary you want to vote in, is January 6."If you’re a non-partisan voter, now is the time to act," says Vu. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers believe they have discovered a way to reduce what they describe as health risks associated with red meat. A study published Monday in the journal Nature Microbiology considers whether bacterial enzymes could be used to clear from our tissues a carbohydrate created when humans eat red meat. The carbohydrate, known as Neu5Gc, builds up as we eat red meat, researchers say. They suggest our immune systems treat Neu5Gc as a foreign invader and generate antibodies against it, leading to chronic inflammation and other diseases. A team led by UC San Diego professor of pediatrics and bioengineering Karsten Zengler, Ph.D., believes bacterial enzymes could remove Neu5Gc from red meat before people eat it. “It’s our hope that this approach could be used as a sort of probiotic or prebiotic to help reduce inflammation and the risk of inflammatory diseases - without giving up steak,” said Zengler. The researchers bought steak and pork sausage from a grocery store and rubbed it with a lab-made bacterial enzyme. They found that “sure enough, most of the Neu5Gc came right off,” according to UC San Diego officials. Zengler and his team are working to optimize the enzyme to make sure it removes Neu5Gc and not similar carbohydrates. The group will also explore mass production possibilities and the potential for preventing inflammation and inflammatory diseases.The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, UC San Diego Chancellor’s Research Excellence Scholarship, and Science Without Borders, officials said. 1624

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Whale watchers have been delighting over an invasion of humpback whales off San Diego’s coast.Domenic Biagini is a photographer for San Diego Whale Watch.
