SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Halloween carnival at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park could be saved with a controversial decision.The park is short-staffed and in desperate need of volunteers.The City of San Diego allows people to volunteer one time per year without needing the usual criminal records check.Some parents are concerned about who would be volunteering near their children.The City sent 10News an email Friday indicating only volunteers who passed a background check would directly supervise or interact with children.Any volunteer does not go through a background check will be in support roles such as setting up tables and directing traffic. 669

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is preparing to uproot their lives and move across the country so their 2-year-old son can get a life-altering liver transplant.After Gavin was born, Kendra and Vince Giacalone waited nearly two years for answers on what was wrong with their son.Eventually, through exome sequencing, they learned Gavin had a rare genetic disorder: GM3 Synthase Deficiency. He's missing an enzyme which helps with brain development.The family read online there was no treatment or medicine for their son but they refused to give up.After connecting with specialists they are now hopeful a liver transplant from Kendra's sister will replace the enzyme Gavin is missing.The family will move to Pittsburg for several months while Gavin gets the transplant.All transplant costs are being covered by the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA).The family is trying to raise ,000 for COTA in Gavin's name - 100 percent of donations will go to Gavin.You can also follow Gavin's Rare Journey on Facebook.  1041

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A piece of Hollywood has made its way to the USS Midway Museum. Thursday crews worked to move a large movie prop onto the deck of the famed vessel: A replica of the TBD Devastator that was used in the movie “Midway." “It’s the only Devastator on display in the world,” says Walt Loftus, Air Wing Director at the USS Midway Museum. “All the rest of them are at the bottom of the ocean.”RELATED: Top Gun 2 plane driven through Coronado streetsThe plane is a replica of the carriers that sailors used at war. The giant plane was a prop used in the upcoming film, starring Woody Harrelson, Luke Evans, and Nick Jonas. It's designed with “big square tubing with foam made into the shape of the devastator,” says Loftus. “But it's the actual size that the Devastator was.”"Midway" follows the story of U.S. Navy sailors and aviators who persevered through the Battle of Midway in 1942. It was only six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local woman is suing the Greyhound bus company after an unscheduled stop allowed border agents to come on the bus and question the citizenship of passengers. Rocio Cordova was traveling from San Diego to Phoenix in November 2017 when her bus was stopped.Her lawyer, Darren Robbins, tells 10News, “Well this practice was brought to our attention and our client was one of the people subjected to these warrantless searches conducted without probable cause.”RELATED: 'Minutemen' wants troops at border gaps near CampoHe continued to say these immigration raids have been happening on multiple different Greyhound buses. Cordova is accusing Greyhound of violating state consumer protection laws by allegedly consenting to racial profiling by law enforcement officers. Cordova is a United States citizen, however, watched people on the bus around her questioned based on their race, according to her lawyer, “it is highly invasive and inappropriate to facilitate such action of law enforcement officials against its own passengers”. The complaint was served to Greyhound on Friday.Robbins is now waiting for their response, “the best response would be they'll refrain from any additional illegal behavior and stop allowing this kind of warrantless searches to take place on greyhound facilities or Greyhound buses,” he tells 10News.  1388

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A nursing assistant at a Rancho Bernardo senior care facility is battling for her life, diagnosed with COVID-19. In terms of coronavirus, Villa Rancho Bernardo care center is among the hardest-hit senior care facilities in the county.In early May, Lani says her sister, Irene Branch, a longtime nursing assistant there, told her about all the sick calls, and repeated her insistence to keep working."She always has a big heart. If they are short, she always go to work," said Lani.Around the same time, Branch started to feel sick."Coughing a little bit, no appetite and a short fever," said Lani.Her symptoms quickly got worse and a few days later, Lani got a frightening call from her sister. "She had shortness of breath, so I told her to call 911," said Lani.She did, and a day later in the ICU, Branch was on a ventilator. She received donated plasma containing COVID-19 antibodies, but her condition has deteriorated. Kidney failure has led to ongoing dialysis."I pray. Our family is praying a lot. Every one is praying for her," said Lani.Lani says doctors recently removed her from a medically induced coma, but she remains comatose. "She can't wake up. That's the problem. She's not waking up ... It's hard. I can't accept it right now," said Lani.Unable to visit her sister because of COVID-19 restrictions, Lani recently talked to Branch via Facetime while a hospital worker held up a phone."Telling her we are here to support her. Letting her know we are not abandoning her ... I am very hopeful. I will not give up," said Lani.
