INDIANAPOLIS -- 14 offenders at the Indiana Women's Prison are now enrolled in a year-long program that will teach them how to create web applications.The non-profit "Last Mile" is offering the software engineering training. Governor Eric Holcomb joined members of the first class on Thursday, along with Last Mile board members, including rapper and entrepreneur MC Hammer, to kick off the program."I've been in and out of DOC a few times in my life in the past, so I know firsthand about some of the stumbling blocks that exist. Therefore, when I heard about this program, it just really inspired me to apply, because I want to be a success," said Stacy Jennings, a Last Mile participant.Fifty women applied for the program but only 14 were selected.The idea is to arm the women with the skills needed to knock down barriers and land a job once their time behind bars is done.Business and community partners will offer internships."What I hope to get is a new beginning. The opportunity to be able to support myself, be financially stable and also help others to know it's never too late to keep moving forward," Jennings said. Introduction on coding in the Indiana Women's Prison starts on Monday. It's not too hard to spot massive housing projects being built around San Diego County right now.But they may not be enough to provide little relief to the rising rents and home prices around the region.A recent report from the San Diego Housing Commission said the city would need to build on average as many as 22,000 housing units per year for the next decade. But in 2017, only 10,000 units were authorized countywide."It's not so much that there is resistance to it, it's just the fact that it's hard to do," said Jeff Stevens, chair of the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group. "If you have to tear something down in order to build something else, it takes time and money."Some of the city's larger projects are in Mira Mesa - where Casa Mira View will have about 2,000 apartments when complete.And to the west at Hansen's Aggregates, a quarry that runs through Carroll Canyon, Shea and Lennar are planning to build what's called 3 Roots. The complex would have 1,800 units - including 186 single-family homes, 981 condos, and 633 apartments (180 of which will be affordable). The complex is about to go through environmental review. Still, residents are already expressing concerns over impacts like traffic."I want people to have affordable housing, that's very important. And also we want the contractors, subcontractors to have jobs, and growth is always important. But they need to think it through first before they do it," said John Svelan, a longtime Mira Mesa resident. ,Stevens said his board has reacted positively to 3 Roots, which would extend Carroll Canyon road. Another complex is being proposed over at Vulcan Materials for about 4,500 homes, but that's further away. The city of San Diego recently approved a series of development incentives, including density bonusses for micro-units near transit areas, that it hopes spurs more building. Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University, said it may take 15,000 new units per year just to stabilize the market. Meanwhile, Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego, noted that the region added 27,000 new jobs in the last year, increasing the demand for housing.    2220

In the town of Schuyler, Nebraska, located about 65 miles west of Omaha, immigration reform is a huge issue.A Cargill beef processing plant is the largest employer there, with a predominately Hispanic workforce.People who live in Schuyler, a town of about 6,000 people, are worried what the economic impact would be on the immigrant workforce there if DACA recipients and their families are forced to leave."In this town, there's a lot of commerce, Hispanic business. And the majority of our clients are Hispanics," said Rosa Lopez, Schuyler restaurant owner.Business owners in Schuyler — with a population that’s nearly 70 percent Hispanic and a business district dominated by Hispanic-owned shops and restaurants — is worried about the repercussions its economy would face if there's no DACA resolution by March."We depend on our youngsters for the future,” resident Irma Cuevas said. “So if that were eliminated, it would completely devastate not only Schuyler, but several other communities.""They're our clients,” Lopez said. “And if they get rid of the program, we would lose them as clients. And they wouldn't be able to contribute to the local economy."Long-time residents, like Luis Lucar, say DACA helps keep — and bring in — more people to the workforce there in Schuyler, which he says used to be a ghost town."If that happened, Schuyler would definitely go back to those years where businesses were closing,” Lucar said. “I don't think we want to see that again. And not only in Schuyler, but other Nebraskan cities that basically survive because of the immigrant workforce."Burrito House owner Chuy Salinas said at the end of the day, DACA recipients should get to stay — not only because it's good for business, but because it's the right thing to do.“Business is business,” he said. “But it's heartbreaking to see the moms and their kids, even if they're older like 22 or 25 — they'd have to be sent back and not even have a place to live.” 1964
