The team is giving its first look at next year's new brown uniforms this fall.The Padres are set to debut their new 2020 uniforms at an event on Nov. 9 at Petco Park, a team spokesperson confirmed to 10News. The news originally dropped after President of Business Operations Erik Greupner revealed the date on Twitch.Since January, fans have waited in anticipation of seeing the new brown uniforms after the team announced the color change. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Malls across San Diego County did not experience the rush of last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve, as the coronavirus continues to take its toll on the economy and life in general."We used to have to have the employees park in a different section that was further away so it left the open spots for customers, we haven't needed to do that this year," said Caitlin Todd, manager at Grossmont Center's Prevue Formal and Bridal.Todd said other than Target and Sees, the mall has been less busy this holiday season. She said it's not just the economy, but also that the coronavirus has made in-person shopping a more practical matter. "With restaurants not having as much ability to have indoor dining or outdoor dining, it's been more of a 'come, get what you need and leave,' kind of shopping experience, versus an all-day thing with the family," she said. The virus has taken a toll on the retail industry, with employment in department stores down 28% compared to the same time last year. Malls have instituted social distancing, limited entertainment, and retailers are limited to 20% capacity - meaning lines to get in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It will take about a month to get the old Family Courthouse in downtown San Diego demolished and the area cleaned up, and once it’s gone, work will begin on what will replace it -- brand new affordable housing units.Piece by piece, the building that once heard divorce, custody, and other domestic issues was torn down. In its place will be a new eight-story building with 120 affordable housing units at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Cedar Street.While it’s been vacant, it was used as a temporary shelter for migrant families seeking asylum. Soon it will become home to senior citizens and other families.To be eligible for this affordable housing, a household must make less than 60% of the area median Income. For San Diego, according to the San Diego County website, it is less than ,000 for one person.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the location plays a big part in this project.“Everyone one wants affordable housing as long as it's not near them, but we know this is where housing needs to go. This location is in an urban environment in a downtown setting along transit corridors, walking distance to services is where we need to go,” Fletcher said.After the building is demolished, the next step in this project will be to get community input on the design of the unit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Long wait times have always been a problem at the DMV, the way to avoid that was to make an appointment online to skip the long lines. For people needing to renew their license like Debby Herscovitz, they had to plans months in advance, “I went online, booked an appointment, but I had no idea it was going to be in March”. Herscovitz got a notification from the DMV in the mail to renew her license back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. She tells us the first available time slot was at the end of March, “I absolutely had no idea it was going to take that long”. A DMV representative tells 10News, drivers are trying to avoid the hours long line at the DMV by making an appointment online. Because so many people are scheduling appointments, the appointments are filling up faster than ever before. For Herscovitz, her appointment would have taken a total of 15 minutes to get her Real ID, however she didn’t have all the necessary documents. The DMV tells 10News to help people adjust to the new requirements and be prepared for their appointments they have a video people can watch before they make the trip in. Despite having to plan months in advance, the DMV says it’s still the best idea to schedule an appointment online before heading to a nearby office. Tips to keep in mind that could help with the scheduling process: don’t rule out nearby offices because some might not be as busy as others. Also, continue to check back online to see if any cancellations were made. Here in San Diego, there are also a few offices with extended hours and that are open on Saturdays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It has now been seven months since the pandemic began, and there are still a lot of questions about the best ways to treat patients with COVID-19.Researchers at UC San Diego are leading an effort to produce swift and reliable answers that could help doctors tailor treatments and hospitals plan bed space more efficiently.Doctors agree: the best way to fight any disease is to tailor the treatment for each individual based on their age, gender, race and other factors. But how does one doctor do that with a new disease like COVID-19, especially if their hospital has only seen a few hundred cases?“There might be some patterns you can get from 500 patients but there might be some others that you cannot,” said UCSD professor Dr. Lucila Ohno-Machado, chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics.Dr. Ohno-Machado’s solution? Pool data.She’s leading the charge behind COVID19questions.org, a collaboration between 12 medical systems spanning more than 200 hospitals across the country.The collaboration includes several University of California health systems, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, and the largest organization in the cohort, the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System.“Each hospital is a little small to answer the questions. So by having it all together, we get the answers quicker,” said Ohno-Machado.They’re going after answers on how long patients with diabetes or cancer stay in the hospital, and whether COVID-19 is deadlier for smokers or non-smokers.Their findings revealed that men are much more likely to wind up on a ventilator than women.And they quantified just how much better we’ve gotten at treating COVID-19 over time.Since May 1, hospital stays among surviving patients have shrunk more than 10 days on average. That’s important for hospital managers planning and predicting bed space.“We decided to open this to the public and to our colleagues, and then we pick which answers have not been answered before and seem to be of most general interest,” Dr. Ohno-Machado explained.If this sounds like a straightforward approach, it’s not. Patient confidentiality laws make it hard for hospitals to share data and the information released by the CDC is limited.Maintaining patient confidentiality while sharing granular data is the most groundbreaking feature of the collaboration, called Reliable Response Data Discovery or known by its Star Wars-inspired acronym, R2D2.UCSD said R2D2 differs from other patient databases and registries because each health system maintains control of data rather than sharing it in a central repository. Through advanced computer techniques, each partner agency shares aggregated data, not patient-level information.The collaboration’s research is based on what’s called “observational data,” so Dr. Ohno-Machado said it’s not a replacement for a randomized, controlled clinical trial, which takes time. She noted their data reflects lessons on hospitalized patients, not everyone infected with the virus.But she said at a time when fast answers can save lives, COVID19questions.org could help. 3161
