In a speech delivered at the UN headquarters on Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced several initiatives to back the efforts of the United Nations, including the creation of the aforementioned fund and a dedication of 8,000 Chinese troops to UN peacekeeping missions.
"China submitted the acceptance letter to the WTO on Sept. 4, which is an important move to push forward the implementation of TFA. China expects more WTO members to accept the agreement," said Wang Shouwen, Chinese vice minister of commerce.
The remark mainly refers to China's establishment of a 10-year, 1-billion-U.S.-dollar China-UN peace and development fund to support the UN's work.
This "uNPRecedented" format in the history of China-U.S. relations "evidently reflects Xi's considerable confidence that he can handle the dynamics of an open-ended discussion," said Kenneth Lieberthal, a senior fellow in Foreign Policy and Global Economy and Development at the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank.
