SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Behind every mammogram Dr. Lisa Watanabe looks at is a woman waiting, and hoping, for good news. Dr. Watanbe is a radiologist, and the Chief Medical Officer for CureMetrix, an artificial intelligence (AI) technology company focused on early breast cancer detection.Their FDA-cleared software is able to learn, using millions of mammograms, to identify, mark, and score anomalies. "Cancers that were missed by a radiologist were detected by the machine, some of them weren't even small, sometimes they were just obscured by dense tissue," said Dr. Watanabe. She says the technology has found breast cancer up to five years earlier than it was found by the human radiologist. "It may detect features on mammograms the human eye can't detect," said Watanabe. The technology is already being used by doctors around the world and is also available to anyone with internet access.Women can pay 9 to get their own CureMetrix second opinion by uploading their mammogram to the online portal DocPanel.Dr. Watanabe says the software is not meant to replace humans but rather help them do their job better.San Diego resident Amanda Caniglia says the technology gave her peace of mind. "As a woman and going for my first mammogram and knowing the family history, there is a lot of anxiety going into it, you don't know what to expect," said Caniglia. While Caniglia's initial mammogram results came back normal, she wanted a second opinion because of her family history of cysts, tumors, and cancer. When the CureMetrix results also came back as normal, it was a huge relief. "it really lowered my anxiety and gave me peace of mind because I was able to know I'm good to go, I'm cancer-free."The technology is lowering the number of false positives and catching cancer earlier, giving more women the chance to find a cure in time. 1846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Court services are being drastically reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which affects both civil and criminal proceedings. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. Then we can at least address individuals who have been arrested,” Shapiro said. The court will still be available for restraining orders, emergency conservatorship, and search warrants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders are continuing to urge San Diegans that 2020 is not the year to skip the flu shot as we head into colder months amid a nearly year-long pandemic. On Wednesday, the fourth of six flu vaccine clinics was held by San Diego County’s Health and Human Services in Logan Heights. All hands were on deck with nurses from across the county, as more people are heading to the free clinics to get their flu shot this season."This is a year to be vigilant of protecting yourself from influenza and getting a vaccine, so we don't run into a situation where people are not only getting COVID, but getting influenza, and clogging our medical response system," said Thomas Zurek, public health nurse manager with the county.Zurek said while we can't control the spread of COVID-19 with a vaccine, we can when it comes to the spread of influenza, which hits hard during cold months when more people are indoors.Zurek added he hopes the free clinics will help keep people out of hospitals this season so staff can focus patients affected by COVID-19."Our numbers have been above what we're normally than seeing this time of year, which is great," Zurek said. The county will hold two more vaccine clinics Thursday and next Tuesday:Thursday, Oct. 29, at East Public Health Center, 367 N. Magnolia Avenue, El CajonTuesday, Nov. 3, at North Inland Public Health Center, 640 W. Mission Ave #2, Escondido 1421

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California's energy operator have issued a statewide Flex Alert ahead of anticipated high temperatures this coming weekend. The California Independent System Operator (ISO) is calling for voluntary electricity conservation, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14."With high temperatures in the forecast, the power grid operator is predicting an increase in electricity demand, primarily from residential air conditioning use," the ISO said in a statement. In San Diego, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from noon Friday until 8pm Monday from the inland areas to the deserts. The heat will peak on Friday and Saturday with temperatures ranging 5 to 15 degrees above normal. The above-normal temperatures and humidity will stick around through most of next week."Consumers are urged to conserve electricity, especially during the late afternoon and early evening, when the grid is most stressed due to higher demand and solar energy production falling. Consumers are also asked to turn off unnecessary lights, use major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m., and set air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher," the ISO said.Conservation Tips ? Set thermostat at 78° or higher ? Cool with fans and draw drapes ? Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances ? Use major appliances in morning or late evening 1355

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are resuming their search Thursday morning for actress Naya Rivera who disappeared while boating on Lake Piru with her young son.The Ventura County Sheriff's Department tweeted that Rivera may have drowned. Later Thursday, authorities began a recovery effort, saying they believed Rivera had drowned. The 33-year-old actress rented a boat at the lake with her 4-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, authorities told media. Staff at the lake found the overdue rental with her child on board but could not find Rivera.Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Cpt. Eric Buschow told the Los Angeles Times that the boy and Rivera got out of the boat for a swim but she did not follow him back onto the boat. The boy was found sleeping on the boat alone by other boaters in the lake, Buschow said.Buschow said Rivera's son is safe with family members.Rivera, from Santa Clarita, earned stardom after her breakthrough role as cheerleader Santana Lopez on the television musical "Glee." According to her biography, Rivera appeared in commercials for retailer Kmart as a baby then broke into acting at the age of four when she starred as Hillary Winston in the television sitcom "The Royal Family."Rivera recently appeared on YouTube Premium’s “Step Up” series.Tragedy struck the former cast of the hit television show twice over the last decade. Former "Glee" star Cory Monteith, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia, in July 2013. Monteith's death was ruled an accidental drug overdose due to a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol. In January 2018, 35-year-old Mark Salling, known for playing "Puck," was found in a Los Angeles riverbed weeks before he was to be sentenced on charges of possessing child pornography.
