As federal government aid begins to wane, hotels across the US says that the majority of jobs in the industry could disappear in the coming months.According to a Hotel & Lodging Association survey, 74% of hotel jobs could be eliminated if additional federal funds are not dispersed to the hospitality industry. Of those surveyed, 69% of operators said that hotel stays have been cut by more than half.The Hotel & Lodging Association says that one in 25 US jobs are supported by the hotel industry, equaling 8 million jobs.According to the federal government, the hospitality industry in total had 16 million employees before the pandemic. In April, that number was cut in half. Federal statistics show about half of the jobs lost in the spring have been regained. But many of those jobs remain in peril.Two-thirds of hotels say that they will go out of business if current revenues remain constant for the next six months."It's time for Congress to put politics aside and prioritize the many businesses and employees in the hardest-hit industries. Hotels are cornerstones of the communities they serve, building strong local economies and supporting millions of jobs," said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. "Every member of Congress needs to hear from us about the urgent need for additional support so that we can keep our doors open and bring back our employees."For months, proposed stimulus packages have been stalled as House Democrats, Senate Republicans and the White House have lacked agreement on a set of proposals. An employee at an Arizona pizza restaurant may lose his eye after being attacked by a woman with a stiletto. Scottsdale Police report that on Fbe. 19 they were called to Gus' Pizza.Witnesses reportedly told police that 32-year-old Kris May Loring fell out of her chair and onto the floor. She left the restaurant thinking other customers were laughing at her. Police say a few minutes later her boyfriend entered the business, yelled at the customers and allegedly threw pizza at them. While Aaron Walter, a security guard for Gus' Pizza Lounge, attempted to detain the man, police say Loring, "took off her stilettos and charged at the victim." She delivered, "deliberate and violent blows towards the victim's head." “I was kind of holding the back of her boyfriend’s neck, just kind of holding him down while he’s blowing off some steam, and next thing you know, I was hit in the eye,” said Walter. Police say one of the stilettos struck Walter in the eye causing a severe laceration. Walter was hospitalized for several days, and his vision has returned since the attack. “I'm glad it was a stiletto.. I'm glad it wasn’t a knife or a gun,” said Walter. Upon her arrest, Loring allegedly threatened to "bite the nose off the arresting officer." She is facing multiple charges including aggravated assault.Despite what happened, Walter says he holds no ill will towards Loring.“I want her to have a wonderful life, I want her kids to prosper, I want her husband to prosper, and I want everyone to just live."  1579

An 18-year-old Nebraska student was arrested earlier this week after police say he threatened to shoot classmates that joined a nationwide movement to walk out of classes in support of gun control.Nicholas J. Scott, 18, a student at Bellevue West High School, was arrested Thursday and booked into the Sarpy County Jail on felony charges of making terroristic threats of violence and possession of a destructive device.Bellevue Police had been investigating a verbal threat reportedly made Wednesday about shooting students at the high school who participated in a planned student walkout as part of a nationwide student protests against gun violence in schools.Police said Scott had been taken out of school by a parent before officers were able to speak with him, according to the press release. But Scott was later contacted and agreed to meet with officers on Thursday. It was at this meeting that he was arrested, the release states.Officers later conducted a search of Scott's bedroom as part of the investigation, finding "various unassembled materials that are commonly known to be used in the manufacturing of explosive devices," which were seized by Bellevue Police as evidence, the release states.Scott remains in the custody of the Sarpy County Jail."The (Bellevue) Police Department would like to publicly thank those who came forward with the information regarding this case," the release states. "The safety guideline of 'Hear Something, Say Something' played an extremely important role in quickly bringing this incident to a safe resolve." 1654

As coronavirus cases spike around the country this fall, and cities impose new or stricter stay-at-home policies, Americans continue a trend this year of moving away from big cities and heading to affordable, smaller metro areas or suburbs.In the last few months, Santa Barbara, Louisville, Buffalo, Burlington, and El Paso were the top five cities with more people looking to move there compared to people looking to leave, according to data from Redfin, a home listing company.Redfin looked at data from the third quarter of 2020, and compared it to data from 2019 about how many people were looking into moving to or leaving certain metro areas.“Remote work has opened up a whole new world of possibilities when it comes to buying a home,” said Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather in a release from the company. “Many residents of expensive areas like New York or Los Angeles couldn’t manage to afford rent and save for a home at the same time. So it’s no wonder that these folks are looking to buy homes in much more affordable places like Louisville and Little Rock.”Previous reports have shown similar trends in 2020, as the number of vacancies continue to climb in places like Manhattan, home prices are increasing and supply is dwindling in suburbs and smaller cities.An August report from HireaHelper.com, a website that helps with movers, found high-rent cities like San Francisco and New York saw more people leaving than moving in; both cities had 80 percent more people moving out of the area than moving in. Meanwhile, the state of Idaho saw an increase of 194 percent more people moving in compared to leaving.In the Redfin data, Santa Barbara seems like an expensive outlier in the list of affordable cities. The other cities on the top ten list all have median home prices below the national average of 4,000.“Santa Barbara has become even more popular since the beginning of the pandemic as remote workers leave dense cities for picturesque places with more open spaces and beaches. Another advantage is that it’s not too far from Los Angeles, so remote workers have the option of commuting one or two days a week when offices open,” said California Redfin agent John Burdick in a statement.Overall, Redfin says 29 percent of people looking for homes on their sites in the third quarter of 2020 were looking to move to a different city. 2370
