SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A program at the East Mesa Reentry facility is helping inmates transition out of jail and back into the workforce. This program is offering inmates certificates in trades which include welding, construction, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and more. The participants study and earn these certificates for free. The reentry program is helping over 700 men head back into the workforce in a positive way.“It’s something that they can give back to the community later on in life, where at one point they took away, but now they feel like they actually achieved something,” said Detron Williams. Williams is a few months away from earning a trade certificate in construction. The reentry program not only focuses on education but also helps inmates understand their emotions and build confidence. “They’ve built the confidence now, and they have learned the different techniques so that when they are out in the community they can either start a new life or they can go back to the work that they previously had,” Matt Russo said. For Williams and the other inmates he has talked to, this program also provides a sense of accomplishment.“Now they are building structures that later on in the future they can drive by and say I built that, I helped that,” Williams said. 1301

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A La Jolla taco stop is being hailed among the best stops among fast-casual favorites like In-N-Out and Shake Shack. The Taco Stand was named the fourth best fast casual restaurant in the U.S. by Trip Advisor, as part of the website's 2019 Travelers' Choice awards. The La Jolla restaurant was hailed by reviewers as having the "best steak burritos ever tasted" and simply "taco nirvana.""We are so thrilled by this news and grateful," The Taco Stand co-owner Julian Hakim told 10News. "The Taco Stand was built out of a passion for food, making great tacos and burritos. It is a simple philosophy and appears to be working."RELATED: Chula Vista taco spot attracts customers from all over San DiegoHakin's love for tacos found in Mexico led to the vision and creation of the La Jolla taco shop, according to Zagat.Their Tijuana-inspired tacos are crafted with handmade corn tortillas, and salsa and guacamole that's made from scratch daily. They also serve a variety of locally made paletas, or Mexican popsicles; Rosarito-style churros with dipping sauce; and elote, or grilled corn with mayonnaise, cheese, and chili powder. The restaurant ranked just under In-N-Out, Shake Shack, and Earl of Sandwich (all of which have locations in San Diego County) on Trip Advisor's list. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A North Park gym owner who defied the governor's health order and moved workouts indoors was served with a violation notice from the county, threatening ,000 daily fines. Owner Frank Kole initially complied with last month's order and moved everything outdoors, but after five days made the decision to go back inside. That's because he says the sidewalks outside his gym were littered with feces, blood stains, and trash. Kole instead instituted strict rules indoors, requiring masks and social distancing. But the county, while acknowledging the tough reality outside, still served him with the violation, saying it was the law. RELATED: North Park gym moves back in after 'disgusting' outdoor workouts"I appreciate that you previously complied with the state and local orders by moving your operations outdoors and had difficulties due to the surrounding environment," said the violation letter, signed by Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten. "I encourage you to work with the city of San Diego to see what can be done to resolve the difficulties you previously faced." On Friday, however, Kole took everything back outside. Immediately, he and his staff discovered a syringe on the sidewalk as they were setting up equipment. The city of San Diego power washed the sidewalk on Wednesday, but Kole says it was a quick job without trash pickup. "If we weren't out there cleaning that sidewalk up everyday, that needle would still be there," Kole said. A spokeswoman for the city of San Diego says environmental crews will pick up syringes with biohazard boxes when they encounter them. In the meantime, residents can report the on the city's Get-it-done App. Kole says he will comply with the order and keep the gym outside, even if it means reduced hours and more staff time moving everything in and out everyday. "I'm a proud American and I'm a proud business owner and I will do what it takes to keep my business alive," Kole said. "You will have to pull that business from my bloody hands before I close." 2044
