SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's Air Pollution Control District selected projects from 49 organizations Wednesday to receive .3 million in grants for projects designed to keep 692 tons of greenhouse gas and pollution out of the skies. The grants, part of the county's Clean Air for All campaign, will reimburse the selected businesses, local governments, schools and utilities for swapping out high-polluting, heavy-duty equipment for low-polluting or zero- polluting vehicles, boats and machinery. The district has notified all the organizations that their projects have been selected to receive the grants funded by California's Air Resources Board and Department of Motor Vehicles. All the organizations must sign contracts to start their projects; seven of the projects must still receive final approval from the California Air Resources Board. The organizations are reimbursed once their projects are completed.District officials estimate that if all 138 selected projects are completed they would improve local air quality over their lifetime by preventing the emission of 562.5 tons of nitrogen engine emissions, 103.5 tons of reactive organic gases that affect ozone production and 26.1 tons of diesel particulate matter -- small particles of carbon like soot. All told, the weight is roughly equal to six space shuttles. The majority of the grant money, roughly .3 million, is targeted to help the county's portside environmental justice neighborhood communities and projects from other state-designated disadvantaged communities. Those include the portside communities of Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Sherman Heights and western National City as well as El Cajon and San Ysidro. The state Air Resources Board selected those portside neighborhoods as part of its Community Air Protection Program. That program provides special funding for neighborhoods that are disproportionately harmed by air pollution because they're near ports, shipping, freeways, rail yards, freight, warehouses and industries. The board created its program in response to California's 2017 passage of Assembly Bill 617, which aimed to help local communities threatened the most by air pollution. Some of the selected portside and disadvantaged communities' projects include truck, school bus, port equipment and marine replacements. The remaining money comes from a mixture of state air quality improvement funds and will primarily be spent to upgrade off-road vehicles, agricultural equipment and marine equipment for 36 organizations. 2530

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Cajon Valley Union School District has joined 17 other California school districts in filing lawsuits against Juul for marketing its e-cigarettes and related products to children, attorneys said Tuesday. The suit is one of several recently filed against the San Francisco- based vaping company, which could not immediately be reached for comment regarding the litigation.Cajon Valley Union's suit is one of three filed by San Diego County school districts, joining San Diego and Poway Unified.RELATED: San Diego Unified School District suing JUULThe lawsuits allege negligence and nuisance on the part of Juul, claiming its advertising campaigns targeting young people have caused an e- cigarette "epidemic," which has "severely impacted" the school districts by interfering "with normal school operations."The school districts are also seeking compensatory damages to offset financial losses the districts allege resulted from vaping-related student absences, as well as extensive costs the districts incurred to establish outreach and education programs regarding vaping and enforcement infrastructure such as vape detectors, surveillance systems and extra staff to monitor e- cigarette use among students."The youth vaping epidemic created by Juul has significant costs," said John Fiske, shareholder for plaintiff's attorneys Baron & Budd. "These 18 school districts represent and serve over 1 million students and have taken on an extreme financial burden in order to try and stop the pervasive vaping on their campuses and keep their students safe."RELATED: California sues e-cigarette maker Juul over ads, youth salesPlaintiffs' attorneys claim Juul controls more than 70 percent of the e-cigarette market, and has grown rapidly due to targeting school-age children."Holding Juul accountable for its deceitful marketing practices targeting our youth is the first of many steps in rectifying the damage created by the e-cigarette manufacturer," said Rahul Ravipudi, partner at law firm Panish, Shea and Boyle, LLP. "We're ready to see this fight through until justice is served." 2118

Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network. The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A. In the United States, 1.2 million people are living with the virus. The UCSD-led clinical trials unit serves several regions in the United States burdened by chronic and new HIV infections as well as global regions impacted by both HIV and tuberculosis. The unit will investigate therapeutic strategies aimed at a cure for HIV, including evaluating viral persistence, researching antibody approaches to treatment and prevention and investigating treatment of inflammation and its impact on HIV comorbidities. In addition, investigators will study new drugs including long-acting drug formulations for HIV treatment and prevention, HIV-related coinfections and comorbidities -- including metabolic and end organ complications and a hepatitis B cure, as well as the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, including TB preventive vaccines, in persons with mono- and HIV-coinfection."We are honored to lead a talented pool of investigators in a common goal of advancing research that clinically benefits people living with HIV," Benson said. 2830
