SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Collaborative Clinical Trials Unit at UC San Diego has been selected to lead and administer an international seven-year, million grant for HIV/AIDS clinical trials.The National Institutes of Health selected UCSD, along with other American, South African and Indian research hospitals, as part of its seven-year HIV/AIDS funding renewal. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A. Kamala Harris questioned U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan on the economic fallout of last month's nearly six-hour closure of the San Ysidro Port of Entry during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday in Washington, D.C. CBP fully closed the San Ysidro Port of Entry to vehicles from 11:30 a.m. to around 5 p.m. Nov 25 after a group of asylum-seeking members of the migrant caravans in Tijuana attempted to cross the border and illegally enter the U.S. CBP agents used tear gas and pepper ball guns to quell the crowds. According to Harris' office, businesses in the city of San Ysidro lost .3 million due to the closure. Roughly 5 billion in annual gross regional product in San Diego and Imperial counties is reliant on interborder commerce. ``You can appreciate that there's a lot of concern in that part of our state from business owners, especially when the president has threatened to `permanently close the border,' that there would be real economic harm to that region,'' Harris said. According to McAleenan, the agency remains in daily contact with the San Diego Association of Governments and the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce regarding the closure and its economic effects. The CBP is also conducting a review of the incident, which McAleenan said happens after every use of force. ``I personally wrote into our operational plan the need to maximize legitimate trade and travel while we made sure that any caravan arrival would be managed in a safe way, so I delegated that authority to the lead field coordinator in San Diego area,'' McAleenan said. ``They actually opened it up a little bit before they felt that we had full resolution, because they thought it was a secure enough situation. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The North County Transit District will temporarily reduce service for its Coaster commuter trains starting Monday until further notice amid a drop in ridership tied to the coronavirus outbreak.Weekday train service will be reduced by about 50%, particularly around the noon hour, when several northbound and southbound trains will be suspended. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 3.3% in June, the first increase in the rate since March, according to data released Friday by the California Economic Development Department.The county's unemployment rate rose from an adjusted 2.7% in May to 3.3% in June. The unemployment rate had steadily declined for much of the year's first half, save for a one-tenth increase from 3.5% in February to 3.6% in March.3.3% in June. Despite the unemployment rate increase, the county's total nonfarm employment increased by 7,100 jobs, from 1,510,200 in May to 1,517,300 in June. Month-over-month farm employment stayed steady at 9,000. Multiple industriesshowed month-over-month job gains in the thousands, according to EDD data.The leisure and hospitality industry added 3,400 jobs from May to June, the most of any industry in the county. Much of that increase, per the EDD, was due to businesses like casinos and hotels bulking up their staffs for the summer. The construction, government and manufacturing industries also showed month-over-month gains of more than 1,000 jobs.Despite the month-over-month increase, the county's unemployment rate remains below last year's June rate of 3.6%. Nonfarm industries added 25,700 jobs from June 2018 to last month while farm employment dipped year-over-year from 9,700 to 9,000.The professional and business services and educational and health services industries added 8,000 and 7,400 jobs, respectively, far and away the most in the county year-over-year.
