Lucy Hernandez says she struggles to wake up every morning. The Chicago fall weather makes battling her depression even harder. The sound of her alarm reminds her that she needs to get out of bed and help her daughter start her virtual learning class.“I have been working in the company for 20 years," Hernandez said. “It's like one day you come to work, and they tell you, ‘We don’t have a job for you.’ It is stressful. I have been going through depression.”A recent Pew Hispanic survey shows that U.S. Latinos are among the hardest hit by pay cuts and job losses because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hernandez says it could get worse for her family.“My husband works at a hotel and his place is open, but who knows what is coming,” said Hernandez.Hernandez says her layoff has changed her perspective about the presidential election and will vote for the person who she thinks will bring back jobs.While hotel workers like Hernandez struggle to find a job, employees at Mi Tierra Restaurant work diligently to make sure every customer is pleased with their service. Prisila Fuentes manages the family business and knows that no restaurant is safe during the COVID-19 pandemic."It’s been a struggle,” Fuentes said. “We have been getting back to what we were pre-COVID-19, but it’s a long way from what we had before.”The Fuentes family made the tough decision and closed their doors in April to strategize.More than half of their employees were laid off for a month, but they were later called back.Fuentes says that her recent business struggles will be factors when voting for the next president. She has not committed to either candidate and hopes to get more clarity on their plans for the economy, an issue that for many Latinos is the bottom line in this election. 1777

MENTOR, Ohio — Some northeast Ohio salon owners are concerned House Bill 189, which proposes cuts in mandatory cosmetology training, could create a potential public safety issue.The measure sponsored by State Representatives Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson) and Alicia Reece (D-Cincinnati) calls for a reduction in training for cosmetology licensing from 1500 hours to 1000 hours.Bill proponents believe the measure will improve Ohio’s cosmetology laws by allowing more cosmetology graduates to enter the workforce earlier and with less debt, thus increasing entrepreneurship and bolstering the workforce for Ohio’s salons.But some local salon owners, like Jennifer Pealer with Jenniffer and Company Salon in Mentor, believe a reduction in required training can set-up future cosmetologists for potential salon mistakes. Pealer believes 1500 hours of training is needed to insure cosmetologists are prepared to use potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment on a daily basis."The biggest thing is public safety," said Pealer. "Hair damage can occur very easily without proper training. What happens is there is damage to the follicle, the hair breaks off, and if it's not reproduced, there could be balding."Salon owner Nancy Brown owns the Brown Aveda and Casal Aveda Institutes for cosmetology training in Northeast Ohio and believes HB-189, and its companion Senate bill, SB-129, are being considered for the benefit of chain salons, which provide quick hair cuts and not more technical services.Brown believes the measures sets cosmetologists up to be under-trained, and could also cut training for nail technicians to just 100 hours."The equipment we use requires training, the shears we use are sharp enough to perform surgery," said Brown. "Our curling irons at the professional level are 450 degrees. MENLO PARK, Calif. – Facebook is offering to pay some of its users to deactivate their accounts in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election.It’s part of a new research partnership Facebook is launching to better understand the impact its website and Instagram have on key political attitudes and behaviors during U.S. elections.“We need to better understand whether social media makes us more polarized as a society, or if it largely reflects the divisions that already exist; if it helps people to become better informed about politics, or less; or if it affects people’s attitudes towards government and democracy, including whether and how they vote,” said Facebook when it announced the study Thursday.Facebook expects between 200,000 and 400,000 adults will choose to participate in the study. In a press release, the company said participating “could include taking part in surveys or agreeing to see a different product experience.”The company also said, “other participants may be asked to stop using Facebook or Instagram for a period of time.
