FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) — Police say a suspect has been arrested in the stabbing death of a man at the California State University, Fullerton campus.Fullerton police Lt. Jon Radus on Thursday told The Associated Press that 51-year-old Chuyen Vo was arrested Wednesday night at his home in Huntington Beach. Vo is suspected in the death of a former co-worker, 57-year-old Steven Shek Keung Chan. Police would not elaborate on the work relationship between the two men.Chan worked as the director of budget and finance and student services for university extended education but retired in 2017. He returned to the campus in January to work as a consultant.Authorities have said Chan was found stabbed numerous times inside his silver Infiniti in a campus parking lot on Monday, and they believe it was a targeted attack. 825

From housing to food to health care, everything is getting more expensive while wages stay mostly stagnant. It’s part of a phenomenon called inflation and it has a direct impact on each of us.As the old cliché goes, ‘a dollar doesn’t get you what it used to.’ That saying helps explain the role inflation plays in the economy.Inflation happens when general prices go up, relative to supply. It causes a noticeable and continuous decline in buying power. It’s easy to confuse inflation with general market forces. Like, when kale prices go up because of fad-driven demand or when sweater prices increase just before winter.A small amount of inflation is supposed to help the economy by encouraging spending and investment. But too much of it could send the economy into a spiral. For that reason, the Federal Reserve takes different actions meant to keep inflation rates in check.Inflation isn’t an obscure technical financial term found in college textbooks. It directly affects everyone who participates in the economy.Let’s say a person decided to save in 1970 for use 50 years in the future. Back then, then money could buy about 17 dozen eggs, 28 gallons of gas, or one pair of Wrangler Jeans. But in 2020, the saved money doesn’t go as far.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020 can buy about seven dozen eggs, four gallons of gas, or a half-pair of Wranglers.Inflation gets a bad rap. Everyone would like to buy nice things for cheap. But economists say that’s just not how it works. When prices fall, in general, incomes also have to fall.Think of it as a cycle: a consumer buys from a business. If prices are lower, the business makes less money. That means wages have to drop, giving workers less money to spend as consumers. 1762

HONOLULU (AP) — The small, tight-knit community of about 72,000 people on Hawaii's rural island of Kauai spent the first seven months of the pandemic mostly sheltered from the viral storm. Then in October, statewide travel restrictions eased and the virus came pouring in. The island had only 61 known cases of coronavirus from March through September but went from no active cases in October to at least 84 new infections in just seven weeks. Health officials traced most cases to returning residents and tourists. Hawaii continues to enjoy relatively low hospitalization and death rates. But Kauai last month had its first COVID-19 death and island officials now want mandatory secondary testing for returning residents and tourists. 743

HONOLULU (AP) — As parents help their children navigate remote classes during the coronavirus pandemic, they’re more aware of what's being taught. And they've complained that racist, sexist and other concerning content has appeared in an online learning program called Acellus that's used nationwide. Some districts are reconsidering or getting rid of it. In Hawaii, parents have called out lessons saying Europeans “discovered” the islands and Grumpy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is a “woman hater.” The founder of Acellus calls the controversy an “organized attack." Experts say the scramble to keep classes running during the pandemic means vetting online curriculum may not have been as thorough as it should have been. 740
