Scientists have long warned of the effects of global warming and the possibility of more intense wildfires that burn for longer periods of time. Now, a new team of researchers is hoping to get a better understanding of how the smoke travels and what the tiniest particles could be doing to our lungs. "There's many things we’re still struggling to understand about smoke,” explains Joshua Schwarz, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The group of researchers includes meteorologists and weather modelers, in addition to scientists. “All together, we are deciding which fires to target," Schwarz says. Amber Soja, with NASA, describes herself as the “fire person” of the group. Every day for the next couple of weeks, this group will create a flight plan, opening the door for another group of scientists inside this flying laboratory. “We've got tremendous range, and we're carrying a tremendous payload of information,” Soja says. This lab was once an Italian passenger airliner. It flies straight into the smoke of fires. "We'll have to look at what's the altitude of the smoke we want to be in, which direction is the smoke going, how far can we track that smoke," Schwarz says.Intake tubes on the outside of the lab bring in smoke particles that will be studied. Researchers are interested in learning how the smoke travels and what it does to our bodies when it’s inhaled. Pete Lahm, with the U.S. Forest Service, says studying the smoke is important because it impacts both public health and safety. “This info will help us make in the long run [make] better decisions on when we ignite fire and how we consider smoke impacts, and that's absolutely critical to our mission,” Lahm says. Prince Andrew said in a statement Wednesday that he would step back from public duties "for the foreseeable future" following a firestorm of criticism over his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Here's the full statement from the Duke of York:"It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstances relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has become a major disruption to my family's work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support."Therefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission."I continue to unequivocally regret my ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein. His suicide has left many unanswered questions, particularly for his victims, and I deeply sympathize with everyone who has been affected and wants some form of closure. I can only hope that, in time, they will be able to rebuild their lives. Of course, I am willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required." 1126

Sanctuary city? Results: Yay: 29 Nay: 71Voters in Tucson, Arizona are voting today to decide whether it should become the first city in Arizona to be a sanctuary city, which would prohibit the city's police department for arresting someone solely because of their immigration status. The ballot language states: "Amending Tucson code to establish sanctuary policies; prohibit Tucson police participation in any law enforcement activity for the purpose of determining immigration status; limit officers' authority to inquire about immigration status or contact federal agencies to determine status; and limit joint law enforcement operations between Tucson police and federal agencies."Ranking candidatesResults: Yay: 74 Nay: 26New York City voters are deciding today on whether to change how voters cast ballots in local elections. Instead of the traditional method of voters picking one candidate in an election — otherwise known as first-past-the-post, or FPTP voting — the referendum would allow voters to rank candidates, which would allow for "instant runoffs."The new voting method would go into effect in 2021 if approved by voters, and it would only be used for municipal elections such as for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, borough president and city council members. How it would work is voters can rank up to five candidates on their ballot, and if a candidate receives a majority of first-preference votes, that candidate wins. If a candidate does not receive a majority, then the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated, and the ballots are recalculated. The runoffs continue until a candidate receives a majority of the vote. Democracy dollarsCitizens of Albuquerque are deciding whether to allow for government-disbursed vouchers to be used in municipal elections. The vouchers, valued at per resident, would allow residents to give their vouchers to a candidate of their choice. 1938

Rock musician Rick Springfield canceled his show in the Dominican Republic, citing concerns over the well-being of his fans. The announcement comes after rising safety concerns in the Dominican Republic, as at least 10 American citizens have died while in the country in the last year. More are saying they became sick while they were visiting, and this week Sen. Chuck Schumer called for a federal investigation. And though statistics show that Americans are more likely to be killed in the US than in the Dominican, many people are still alarmed."While this decision has not been easy, the safety and well-being of our amazing fans, band and crew will always be the most important consideration in any situation. Sending our love and best wishes to all of our friends in the Dominican Republic," Springfield said in a statement on his website. The concert, supposed to be a "fan-getaway" for five days in November, has been rescheduled for 2020 at the Hard Rock Hotel Cancun. The new dates have not yet been released, but fans can receive a full refund if they choose. The deathsVittorio Caruso, 56Family members said Caruso, of Glen Cove, Long Island, suddenly became ill and died on June 17 while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Caruso's sister-in-law, Lisa Maria Caruso, told News 12 Long Island that Vittorio Caruso died after suffering respiratory distress and possibly a heart attack. The family received a phone call saying Caruso was sick, she said. Minutes later, they received a second call telling them he had died, 1542

TAMPA, Fla. — An unknown suspect targeted a South Tampa yard sale, benefiting a good cause, with phony money. Katherine, who asked us not to share her full name, was hosting a fundraiser Saturday for her teenage niece, who is in need of a new kidney. "I love her and we did this as an effort to raise money for her so she can get the transplant and it would be less money out of her family’s pocket," said Katherine. Katherine says one man came by the yard sale and talked her down in price for a pair of designer purses and an original painting from Haiti, where she was previously deployed in the military. Turns out, a bill was bogus, handed to her in a peculiar way as to not reveal that it was counterfeit. 730
