BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China and India have agreed to enhance political, economic ties and bolster people-to-people contact during a meeting between Indian President Pratibha Patil and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here on Thursday.It is the Indian president's first official visit to China and the first visit to China by an Indian head of state in the last decade.In the meeting Wen proposed the two states treat bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, enhance high-level communication and bolster cooperation, in a bid to benefit the two peoples and the world."Practicing mutual respect conforms with the fundamental interests of the two states and peoples and will spark new hope for human beings," Wen Jiabao said in the meeting.Patil said India and China share broad common interests in the bilateral and multilateral fields.She pledged to boost high-level contact, cement economic and trade ties, promote two-way investment and people-to-people contact, and strengthen coordination on major international affairs with China.In her meeting with Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo, Patil said all the parties of India support the development of relations with China.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said to promote peaceful co-existence and common development of the two countries meets the fundamental interests of both sides, and complies with the mainstream trend of peace and development in Asia and the world."China and India do not pose as threat to each other and their common interests far outweigh differences," he added.Wu said he hopes the two sides understand and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, properly handle their differences, and seek common development and a win-win situation."A good China-India relationship makes both winners while a confrontational one makes both losers," he added.Patil said the two countries had conducted sound cooperation not only in bilateral field but also under multilateral frameworks including BRIC and G20.The cooperation between India and China in the Copenhagen climate change summit served as a good example of bilateral cooperation in global affairs, she added.Patil arrived here Wednesday for the week-long state visit.

MOSCOW, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Russia will give humanitarian aid to quake-stricken China, a source at the Emergency Situations Ministry told Russian media on Friday."Under the Russian president's order, the ministry will deliver tents, blankets, diesel generators and food to China, about 40 tons of cargo in total," the ministry said, quoted by the Itar- Tass news agency.The flight is scheduled for Saturday, the source said."An Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane of the ministry will bring the aid to the Qinghai province, which sustained the heaviest damage in the recent quake," the ministry said.Another plane will bring more aid to China in the near future.Last Wednesday, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, in Qinghai province, killing over 2,000 people and injuring 10,000 others.

CANBERRA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Australian Minister for Defense John Faulkner have vowed to strengthen exchanges between the armed forces of China and Australia.China and Australia shared common interests and desire in ensuring the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region, said a joint statement released by Guo and Faulkner Friday.The two sides hailed the development of their military-to-military relationship in recent years and said positive outcomes had been achieved through senior visits and exchanges in education, training and technical areas.Both sides agreed that strengthening open dialogue on defense and security issues between Australia and China was conducive to promoting bilateral relations.The statement said China and Australia were both pleased with the outcomes of the current visit and the opportunity it provided to further strengthen bilateral ties and military exchanges.The Sino-Australia defense relationship was an important part of bilateral ties and both sides would work concertedly to sustain sound and stable development in this regard, it said.Both countries should respect and take into full consideration each other's core interests and major concerns, and develop ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the statement said. UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.
