SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A teenager is publicly apologizing after admitting to vandalizing a park in Scripps Ranch last December. Jerabek park was vandalized on December 8, 2018. Days later, the Scripps Ranch Civic Association offered a reward to find the person who vandalized the field. Neighbors said they believed a large truck drove in circles on the field, destroying the turf. In the association’s August newsletter, the unidentified teenager admits to vandalizing the grass. According to the county, a water contact closure was issued Saturday for Imperial Beach. The closure was extended north to include the Silver Strand. “Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary as a result of recent rainfall,” the Department of Environmental Health said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A water hydrant break Friday flooded a stretch of Midway District road and swallowed a traffic signal.The break was reported on Midway Drive between Sports Arena Boulevard and Kemper Street, according to San Diego police. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After losing her husband and her son to a rare form of cancer, a local mom is doing her part to bring awareness to the disease. She teamed up with her family’s medical care team to come up with a step challenge.“I’m a mother on a mission to find and fund a cure for this disease,” says Debra Melikian.She lost her son Merak in February. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor, also known as GIST.“He was so strong, he was so brave and determined to live life on his own terms,” says Melikian. “Merak never let cancer define him.”Melikian says the cancer is hereditary. She lost her husband to the cancer months prior.“I have lost my entire immediate family in a mere two-plus years. I do not want any other family to have to go through the despair and destruction that this cancer brings.”When not tending to patients, the care team at UCSD, who treated Merak and his father, would often participate in fun challenges, like Tough Mudder. Nurse Maura Caffrey says after Merak’s death, they wanted to do something to honor him and bring awareness to GIST.The team came up with a step challenge.“Whether you do Zumba, yoga, or hiking, you can do any type of activity,” says Caffrey. “It’s sort of a movement challenge. Yousif will be voting for the first time.Yousif told ABC 10News anchor Kimberly Hunt that due to the persecution back in Baghdad and not having the freedom to truly make a difference in election, this election -- to her -- is “precious.”The American system is something everyone all over the world admires, according to Yousif.She said as Chaldean Iraqis, her family finally feels true freedom.Even her parents are sharing her joy because they will be voting in their first presidential election here.
