HAWTHORNE (CNS) - A Hawthorne police officer was wounded and a person has been arrested in connection with an officer-involved shooting this morning.Officers were dispatched about 9:20 a.m. to the 14400 block of Aviation Boulevard, where the shooting occurred, according to a watch commander at the Hawthorne Police Department.The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was called about 9:30 a.m. to assist in the investigation, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau. Paramedics rushed the wounded officer to an area hospital, and a person has been detained in connection with the shooting, he said.It was unclear if the person being detained was the shooter, he said. FULLERTON (CNS) - Disneyland's economic impact has jumped by 50% since 2013, according to a Cal State Fullerton study released Friday.The theme park had an .5 billion impact on the region and created more than 78,000 jobs as of the most recent fiscal year, according to a study of October 2017 through September of last year. Disneyland visitors spent .5 billion at local businesses outside the theme park, the study showed."Tourism is one of the major and growing segments of the economy as consumers shift more of their spending to leisure activities," said one of the study's leaders, Anil Puril, director of the university's Woods Center for Economic Analysis and Forecasting."Disneyland Resort has shown phenomenal growth," Puri added. "Disneyland Resort also plays an important role in propelling the economy forward through programs like Disney Aspire, a free education program, and other programs offering skills for economic mobility and advancement."Since 2013, Disneyland's job rate has grown at a 7.2% average annually, which is higher than the general job growth of 2.3% in the region, the study showed. Of the 78,000 jobs created by the theme park, about 73% are in Orange County.Disneyland's workers, guests and the company's businesses generated nearly 0 million in annual state and local taxes, which is 6% higher than the average annual growth since 2013. Health officials say the U.S. faces an uphill battle in convincing some Americans to take a potential COVID-19 vaccine. While polling shows Americans have been more open to a vaccine in recent months, there is still skepticism in vaccines among non-whites across the country.Experts say that Black people, in particular, remain skeptical of vaccines due to past failings of the U.S. healthcare system, in particular, the Tuskegee syphilis study. But the National Medical Association — a nonprofit representing the interests of Black doctors across the country — is trying to fight that skepticism ahead of the potential authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine."We're already suffering more than other community, and we would hate to see that suffering gap widen because members of our community did not affect to receive a vaccine that could have prevented kidney disease, prevented lung damage from COVID-19," Dr. Leon McDougle, the president of the National Medical Association said.The National Medical Association's task force has been doing its own independent vetting of potential COVID-19 vaccines, and McDougle added they are doing so to ensure that politicians are not influencing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."We are trusted messengers for health in the Black community," McDougle said. "That's where we live.
