(KGTV) - Suspected drug smugglers were rescued by U.S. Coast Guard crews this month after their vessel erupted into flames before sinking.Crews from the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO), the U.S. Navy ship USS Zephyr, and the Colombian Navy ship ARC "07 de Agosto" detected the high-speed vessel on April 7 in the eastern Pacific Ocean. As crews prepared to intercept the vessel, the suspected smugglers allegedly began abandoning their cargo and jumped from the boat as it caught fire.Crews rescued four suspected smugglers and spent 90 minutes extinguishing the flames."There was no doubt in our minds what needed to be done to salvage the evidence needed for a successful prosecution even if it meant laying Zephyr alongside a burning hull, with the intense heat and acrid smoke hindering our 90-minute firefight," Lt. Cmdr. Grant Greenwell, the commanding officer of the Zephyr, said. After putting out the fire, crews say they recovered about 1,080 pounds of cocaine. The four suspected smugglers were transferred to custody aboard the Zephyr. The suspected drug vessel was severely damaged and sunk as it was a hazard to navigation. 1195

‘Tis the season to shop! With the holidays around the corner, stores will be offering sales and discounts. Many of them may appear too good to be true. Well, most of them are, and if you’re a shopper who isn’t great at math, you may fall for the advertised sales.More than 70 percent of shoppers reportedly can't do the math when it comes to finding out how much the item will end up costing them. If math isn’t confusing enough, stores have another discount trick up their sleeve. It’s known as “price framing,” and stores have been doing this for years. Here's a trickier scenario seen a lot: there are two price options for a top-of-the-line item and a generic one. Let’s take a blender, for example. Top-of-the-line usually cost about 0, but it’s on sale for 0. The generic usually cost , and now it's on sale for .Which one is the better deal? Most shoppers may think the 50 percent discount on the generic option is the best deal. However, it's all psychological. The store wants you to think the second option is a better deal, but in actuality, no matter which one you buy, you ultimately save the same: . Price framing is everywhere. Airlines do it, as well as cell phone carriers and car dealerships. Just because an item appears to be on sale for a great deal, it doesn’t mean it’s truly a bargain. 1393
A 33-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday after North Las Vegas police said she carried a pickax onto a school campus and threatened children while they were at lunch.Police said just before noon, a resident near Tom Williams Elementary School called police regarding a woman who was carrying a pickax as she was climbing over the school's chain link fence. Two-hundred-fifty children were outside at the time.According to police, the woman, identified as Kisstal Killough, was acting erratic and screaming that she was going to kill everyone.Police arrived within one minute. She put down on the ax and dropped to the ground before orders were given by police.Killough was arrested on charges of assault, trespass, nuisance and loitering on a school property. The principal of Tom Williams Elementary sent a letter out to parents. The safety of our students is the number one priority at Tom Williams Elementary School. As always, we want to keep you informed of important issues happening within our school community. We want to let you know that earlier today, an adult, not associated with our school, attempted to climb a fence to trespass on our campus. Staff and students noticed the woman and law enforcement was called.Officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department responded immediately and took the woman into custody before she could access the playground area. The woman did not harm anyone or cause any damage to the school.I would like to thank the North Las Vegas Police Department for their amazing response time to our call, and I would also like to thank our staff and students for being alert and taking the appropriate actions. This incident serves as an important opportunity to remind our parents and students of safe practices and to look out for each other. If you or your child notices something suspicious or a person on campus who does not have a CCSD ID, please notify one of our staff members immediately. 1965
(KGTV) -- Olive Garden's unlimited "Pasta Pass" promotion, which allows passholders eight weeks of unlimited pasta bowls, sold out in a slurp. It took only seconds to sell out of the restaurant's 22,000 passes priced at 0 each. The restaurant also offered its "Pasta Passport to Italy," which includes an all-expenses paid trip for two to Italy. The 50 available "passports" were sold for 0 each, and include unlimited pasta and the vacation. The passes went on sale Thursday at 11 a.m. Pacific Time."Sorry! All Pasta Passports to Italy were claimed instantly and are sold out," a message on the site said only minutes after the offer went live.According to the fine print for the "Pasta Passport," the 8-day, 7-night Italy vacation will take place on April 7, 2018. Roundtrip airfare, hotel, optional excursions and food are included. The unlimited pasta pass is good for free pasta between Sept. 25, 2017 and Nov. 19, 2017.Last year, the 21,000 passes that were up for grabs sold out in a second. But is the unlimited pasta for eight weeks a good deal?A quick internet search of prices for a box of pasta and a jar of spaghetti sauce shows that a single person can enjoy five servings of pasta for about -- that's breakfast, lunch and dinner for three bucks!Spread that out over 56 consecutive days, and that person will have paid 8.Maybe it's a good deal -- the restaurant offers a bigger variety, probably more ambiance and flair, and you don't have to do the dishes afterwards. Perhaps the bigger question is: do you really want to eat that much pasta ... alone ... just before the holidays? 1658
