(IDC) said on Tuesday.A new IDC report showed that worldwide revenues for media tablet and e-reader semiconductors grew by over 2,000 percent to 3. 3 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 as semiconductor suppliers enabled original equipment manufacturers to bring new products to market less than 8 months after Apple Inc. launched its iPad tablet.According to IDC's definition, media tablets are devices with color displays larger than 5-inch and smaller than 14-inch, running lightweight operating systems and able to be based on either x86 or ARM processors."The opportunity for semiconductors in media tablets and e- readers has exploded and semiconductor suppliers are scrambling to bring to market semiconductor and software platforms to enable these products," Michael Palma, a senior research analyst at IDC, said in a statement.Looking forward, IDC said it expects media tablet and e-reader semiconductor revenues to grow by 120 percent year over year in 2011, predicting that the market will be boosted by the arrival of a new version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system, dual core processors and increased bandwidth."For the next several years, we will see rapid innovation cycles for products launched into the marketplace and semiconductor suppliers will continue to satisfy evolving end user requirements over the coming years," Palma noted.

BRASILIA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- A survey conducted by Brazil's Ministry of Health showed Tuesday that half of Brazilians aged over 55 have hypertension.According to the research, which has been carried out annually since 2006, the proportion of Brazilians diagnosed with hypertension increased over the past five years, from 21.6 percent in 2006 to 23.3 percent in 2010.Besides, the diagnosis of hypertension is higher among women (25.5 percent) than men (20.7 percent). SAN FRANCISCO, May 4 (Xinhua) -- Intel Corp. on Wednesday announced that it will mass-manufacture chips using new transistors featuring a three-dimensional (3-D) structure, calling it a technical breakthrough in microprocessors.The 3-D transistor, called Tri-Gate, represents a fundamental departure from the two-dimensional planar transistor structure that has powered computers, mobile phones and other modern electronics, Intel said."Intel's scientists and engineers have once again reinvented the transistor, this time utilizing the third dimension," Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive officer, said in a statement.Intel on Wednesday also demonstrated a 22-nanometer (nm) microprocessor, codenamed "Ivy Bridge," which will be the first high-volume chips to use the new 3-D transistors.Ivy Bridge is scheduled for high-volume production readiness by the end of this year, the company said.According to Intel, the 3-D transistors enable chips to operate at lower voltage with lower leakage compared to previous transistors, providing up to 37 percent performance increase at low voltage versus the company's 32nm planar transistors.The gain means that the new 3-D transistors are ideal for use in small handheld devices, which operate using less energy to " switch" back and forth, Intel noted.
