SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Public Library is on the road to reopening. Tuesday, eleven locations have reopened, but only for people who placed holds prior to the closure that started in March. Those items can now be picked up with a contact-free system where the person calls when they arrive at the location, then a librarian puts the books on a table outside for the person to pick up. Starting next week, people can put new holds on items. Director Misty Jones said they’ll reopen more after that depending on county orders and plans to keep books virus-free. The future of the libraries will depend on some unknown’s, including how the library can help the school system, what studies reveal about how long the virus can live on items and more. “We adapt to the way that people need the service from us and we’ll adapt and we’ll pivot and we’ll be able to offer that incredible customer service like we always have,” said Jones. The eleven locations currently open as of May 26 are Carmel Valley, College-Rolando, La Jolla/Riford, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Mission Hills-Hillcrest/Knox, Mission Valley, Point Loma/Hervey, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro and Valencia Park/Malcolm X. These locations are open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): The San Diego Zoo got quite a surprise this week when one of its Siamang Apes gave birth.It was a surprise because zoo officials had no idea the mother, Eloise, was pregnant.The zoo confirmed the birth to 10News, saying Eloise had been on birth control.The baby was born Monday morning.SDSU student Francelia Amaya was there shortly after the birth. She has been observing the Siamang apes for the past few months as part of a project for her Anthropology class.Amaya says Eloise had been acting oddly that morning."She was really uncomfortable," says Amaya. "She was trying to find the right position. There were a lot of odd behaviors."Amaya got a few pictures and cell phone video of Eloise holding the new baby and swinging around the ape enclosure with the newborn in her arms.Eloise and the baby were taken out of the exhibit shortly after the birth, as was the father. All three are in observation right now.According to the zoo's website, Eloise is "is the best mom a young siamang could hope to have. She's had lots of practice, having given birth to seven youngsters over the years."The zoo says Siamangs are one of a few primate species that form permanent pairs. Eloise and the father, Unkie, have been together since 1987.There's no word from the zoo about how long they'll be kept out of the public eye. 1353

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A firefighter who died while helping people evacuate a Northern California blaze was killed by a fire tornado that at one point reached a temperature of 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit (1,480 degrees Celsius), officials said.Redding firefighter Jeremy Stoke died after he was enveloped in seconds by a fire tornado with a diameter of 1,000 feet (300 meters) and winds up to 165 mph (265 kph), the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a report released Wednesday detailing his death and the death of a bulldozer operator.Videos released with the report show the massive blaze burning in a populated area and sending a cloud of thick smoke up into the air with flames swirling up into the sky.RELATED: Firefighter killed battling Mendocino Complex fire  The tornado ripped roofs off houses and flung power line towers, cars and a shipping container into the air near the spot where Stoke was overtaken by the flames, according to the report.Cal Fire officials said that on July 26, the 37-year-old fire inspector was driving his pickup truck down a Redding road, working on evacuating people. It was 71 percent contained as of Thursday.The report also detailed the death of private bulldozer operator Don Smith, 81, of Pollock Pines, who was killed when his bulldozer was caught in the flames while trying to improve a fire line, defending a home during what the officials say were "extraordinary fire weather conditions."Both deaths and the injuries occurred within an hour and 50 minutes in one 3-mile (5-kilometer) stretch.Smith was trying to improve a previously constructed a fire line near the Buckeye Water Treatment Plant outside Redding after 5 p.m. on July 26 when other firefighters noticed "a rapid increase in fire activity."It jumped the fire line and a Cal Fire crew chief said he made several radio attempts to tell Smith to "get out of there." Two firefighters in the area also "recognized the urgency of the situation" and tried to reach Smith on foot but had to turn back because of the encroaching flames.Smith reported that he was cut off by the fire and was pushing on in his 2002 John Deere open cab bulldozer in an attempt to reach a safe area. He also requested water drops and four helicopters began dropping water through the smoke and flames around Smith's last known location.Once the smoke cleared, a pilot saw that Smith's dozer had been engulfed in flames and there was no sign of the protective metallic tent that firefighters deploy as a desperate measure when they are about to be overrun by fire. (KGTV) - A proposal to build a four-story, 48 unit apartment complex in Carmel Valley has riled some neighbors, to the point where hundreds of them have now signed a petition asking the San Diego City Council to abandon the project.The complex would be at 10211 Rancho Carmel Drive, just off the 15 Freeway near Ted Williams Parkway. It's less than a half-acre. Right now, a two-story parking structure sits on the plot of land.Plans from developer New Pointe Communities say they would build the complex on top of the parking garage, essentially creating a six-story building.People who live in the nearby Provencal community say it doesn't fit the neighborhood. They've started an online petition to stop it."That’s pretty tall, and that just doesn’t fit in" says Eric Von Waldner, who signed the petition."It’s going to take away our view, take away our privacy. There will be balconies looking right at us. I just don’t like the idea of it," he adds.Von Waldner says neighbors worry the added units will overwhelm the area's electrical, water and sewage grid.They also say it will cause traffic headaches at the signal light on Rancho Carmel Drive and Provencal Place."You got Starbucks over there. You got people that live in my community. If you add 48 more units, it’s going to be crazy," says Von Waldner.They plan to send the petition to District 5 City Councilmember Mark Kersey, asking for a new plan. The Council already has an agreement with New Pointe to sell the land.“A number of residents have contacted me about the proposed project on Rancho Carmel Drive, and I continue to welcome feedback from my constituents. Any redevelopment plans for the site will go through an extensive public process with numerous opportunities for input from the community,” Kersey said in a statement to 10News.According to Eric Edelmen, the chair of the Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Council, the developer still has to submit a formal proposal to the city. They also have to ask for the area to be re-zoned to allow the extra units.Right now, Edelman says the land is only zoned for eight units.He says the last time they heard from New Pointe was at a November 14th meeting.
