SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Department of Agriculture is warning residents not to open unsolicited packets of seeds some people reported receiving from China. The department says it has taken 58 calls from people reporting receiving the seeds as of Wednesday afternoon and warns anyone who receives a package to not plant the seeds or throw them away. “The main concern with these seeds is that they were mislabeled and went through customs without an inspection. Seed from other countries might have pests or diseases that don’t exist here. The County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures is constantly looking for invasive pests which can be weeds, insects, or diseases. They can cause a lot of harm and we work hard to eliminate them.”RELATED: Mysterious seeds sent from China to US mailboxesThe department says unopened seed packets should be dropped off at drop boxes at 151 E. Carmel St, San Marcos 92128 or 9325 Hazard Way, San Diego 92123 address. They will then be sent to the USDA for analysis.Anyone unable to drop off the seeds should call 760-752-4700.Kimberly Pierce-Nolan is just one of the San Diego County residents to receive the seeds. She said she didn't think anything of it when it arrived at her Imperial Beach home a few weeks ago."I said 'I don’t remember ordering and I thought maybe I did, or maybe it was a free gift or something,'" she said. She put the package aside until recently, when posts and warnings about the seeds started circulating. She said she's happy she didn't throw it away or plant them, but is nervous that her name, address and phone number were all on the package.Reports of unidentified seeds from China have been popping up across the country. All 50 states have now issued warnings about the packages. The department believes it is all part of a “brushing” scam used to boost ratings for online vendors. The packaging label ranges from jewelry to "handmade flowers," and the seeds on the inside vary in size and shape.“At this time, we don’t have any evidence indicating this is something other than a ‘brushing scam,’ where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales. USDA is currently collecting seed packages from recipients and will test their contents and determine if they contain anything that could be of concern to U.S. agriculture or the environment,” the USDA said.Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said at a briefing on Tuesday that the address labels were forged and that China Post has asked USPS to send those packages to China for investigation. 2618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Trump administration is targeting California for its sanctuary laws protecting undocumented immigrants.Immigrants in San Diego say they already live in fear of being split from their families. Those who came here for a better life say they are contributing to the economy and their communities. They say it's unfair to paint all undocumented immigrants as criminals.Jesus Mendez Carbajal, a DACA recipient and Human Rights Organizer for Alliance San Diego, believes the lawsuit is unfair and infringes on state's rights. However, some U.S. citizens say it's about time an administration took serious action against states.Brenda Sparks recently moved out of California because of its sanctuary laws. She doesn't believe the state is doing enough to protect its legal citizens. Now she lives in Mesa, Arizona.Almost seven years ago, Spark's son Eric was killed when an undocumented immigrant without a drivers license hit him. Sparks believes if the United States was tougher on illegal immigration her son would still be alive today. 1063

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of San Diego is working to give a boost to those interested in getting a foot in the door of the ever-growing field of cybersecurity. To create the six-month program, USD partnered with a boot camp company to get people trained and employed in cybersecurity as soon as possible. The program springs out of a need for employees. According to a new economic report, the cybersecurity industry has a more than billion economic impact on San Diego, with a total of 19,660 jobs impacted. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - To protect his best friend, a Sabre Springs man found himself in a brawl with a bobcat. Bobby Abrams, a 78-year-old Vietnam veteran, said it happened Saturday morning while walking his dog Sammy. The Navy veteran is in tiptop shape; he does hundreds of push-ups a day and goes on walks up to 14 miles. "Oh yea, he was snarling, arggggg, like that!" remembers Abrams. RELATED: Woman spots bobcat lurking through backyard in 4S RanchAbrams was walking on Ted Williams Parkway when he says the bobcat appeared and quickly attacked Sammy, biting him in the neck. Abrams quickly pulled the bobcat off, grabbing it by the throat and slinging it back and forth. He ultimately broke the animal's neck, killing it. Abrams was left with puncture wounds on his hands. He says he had to defend his dog and would do it again if he had to. He says their close relationship began when Abrams rescued Sammy from an abusive situation; he says they both have PTSD. "I love that dog as much as I love my momma. I love that dog, the Navy, and my momma!" said Abrams. RELATED: Photographs show mystery animal in North San Diego County is likely a bobcatHe started his military career in the Coast Guard and then joined the Navy, serving more than 20 years total.Fish and Wildlife officers picked up the bobcat carcass. A spokesperson says bobcats are not unusual in that area but are usually nocturnal. They speculate the animal might not have gone out that night due to bad weather and instead went out during the day.If you find yourself in a similar situation, wildlife officials say stand your ground and try to pull the animal away. They recommend avoiding going out at night when coyotes and bobcats are out. It's also advised to make loud noises and throw objects, like a rock, at the animal to try and scare it off. Officials say bobcats are typically fearful of humans. 1885
