SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Monday publicly identified a 39-year-old firefighter killed over the weekend in a suspected DUI motorcycle crash near Lakeside.Ryan Ferrara, an engineer with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, was riding on the back of a westbound 2018 Harley-Davidson that crashed into a parked vehicle in the 13000 block of Piping Rock Lane about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office and California Highway Patrol.Ferrara died at a trauma center about an hour later, and the 36-year-old El Cajon resident who had been piloting the two-wheeler was hospitalized for treatment of severe injuries, CHP public-affairs Officer Jeff Christy said.Neither man -- the driver was not publicly identified -- was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck, according to the Highway Patrol."Alcohol and/or drug impairment is suspected as a factor in the collision, and (it) is still under investigation with possible charges pending," Christy said.In a prepared statement, San Diego Fire Chief Colin Stowell said his and his employees' "hearts are broken by the news" of the death of Ferrara, who had been with the city emergency-services agency for 13 years. 1203

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pick-up truck drove through a highway center divider today near Alpine, overturned and caught fire, authorities said.The crash happened at 7:26 a.m. when a Ford truck lost its brakes going eastbound on Interstate 8, overturned on westbound I-8, landed on the right shoulder and became fully engulfed, the California Highway Patrol said.The wreck started a minor brush fire. All westbound lanes of I-8 were shut down from West Willows Road to East Willows Road until 8:23 a.m., where one westbound lane was reopened, the CHP said.It was not immediately known how many people were in the truck or whether there were any injuries. 655

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accosted a woman in the Fairmount Village neighborhood early Sunday and took off with her 2003 Toyota Celica, police said.He intercepted the 30-something woman in the 3800 block of 47th Street at 3:35 a.m., as she was heading to her car."The suspect pushed her to the ground and demanded her car keys," said San Diego Police Department officer Tony Martinez. "The victim complied, and the suspect fled in the victim's vehicle."Police said the vehicle's license plate is 6TQG479. The car has a rear spoiler, Martinez said.The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, about 6 feet tall with an average build. Jerry Brown today appointed a former Del Mar councilman to the 22nd District Agricultural Association Board of Directors and reappointed two other San Diego County residents to the panel.Brown named Del Mar resident Donald Mosier, 74, to a four-year term on the board that governs the Del Mar Fairgrounds on behalf of the state via a nine-member board of directors. The governor appoints each member of the board to serve a four-year term.The District Agricultural Association is a subdivision of the California Department of Food and Agriculture, charged with holding fairs and exhibitions that highlight "various industries, enterprises, resources, and products of the state," according to the CDFA.The governor reappointed attorney Frederick Schenk, 65, and Lisa Barkett, 59, who have served since 2011.Mosier is the Climate Action Plan facilitator for the city of Del Mar and is a member of multiple governing boards, including the Del Mar Community Connections Board, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Climate Action Campaign Board of Directors. He served on the Del Mar City Council from 2008 to 2016 and was a professor at the Scripps Research Institute from 1992 to 2016.Barkett, who was vice president of Merjan Financial Corp. from 1989 to 2013, is a member of the Board of Trustees for both the University of Southern California and Rady Children's Hospital.The appointments do not require confirmation by the state Senate.
