San Diego (KGTV) — San Diego has several New Years Eve fireworks shows. While we may enjoy the sparkle and booms, your pets may run for their lives.“You don’t want to have them outside where all those loud fireworks are going off,” said San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. The organization sees a sudden spike in stray animals around this time of year, she said.Just like on July 4th, many pets who are terrified of loud noises run off in a panic. Walker suggested that owners prevent that by creating a calming environment for animals. “You can even even play music or have the TV on or have some noise in the background to drown out that loud sound of the fireworks,” Walker said. Walker advised pet owners to be prepared with a microchip in case they do run away. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is bringing back its Portable Pool program to help teach children water safety skills. The program will officially open at City Heights Recreation Center starting June 17. While pools are installed, the city will provide free, week-long water safety skills classed for children ages 3 through 15. According to the city, the classes can accommodate as many as 100 children per week with six to 10 children in each class. “Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children ages one to 14 and is the leading cause of accidental injury death for children ages one to four years old,” said Nicole McNeil, Supervising Recreation Specialist for the City’s Aquatics Program. “The City is offering these important free classes to help young children learn basic swimming skills to keep them safe around pools and prevent unnecessary drowning tragedies.”An additional portable pool will be installed at the Robert Egger Sr./South Bay Recreation Center starting July 1. The portable pools will be in place for three weeks before being moved to facilities in Paradise Hills, Linda Vista and Ocean Beach recreational centers. Registration for Portable Pools is on a first-come, first-served basis. To enroll, parents must fill out an ActiveNet form and return it to the recreation center where the portable pool is located. The program was created in 1968 and provides water safety training to children who don’t live near the city’s 13 municipal pools. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County and other cities are trying to give businesses and places of worship more options that would allow them to expand into nearby parks, and while some are taking the help, others are finding alternative ways to stay open.Last weekend, in Encinitas, a massive church gathering was organized, with photos of the event posted on social media.At the gathering at Cardiff State Beach, crowds of people were seen singing, praying, and cheering. Most people weren’t wearing masks and not many people were practicing social distancing.RELATED: Concerns over mass crowds gathered for religious gathering at beachThe event was organized by Worship Leader Sean Feucht, but the State Parks Department said the event did not have a permit.That gathering is the type of mass-attendee event that county officials and other local leaders are working to avoid.Earlier this week, county officials warned three local churches after it was reported they were still holding services indoors – a violation of the state’s guidelines for places of worship.In response to the weekend beach gathering, City of Encinitas officials sent ABC 10News a statement saying they are offering temporary commercial use permits for religious services, fitness classes, or other similar types of activities in outdoor recreational areas.RELATED: Health officials warn local churches about holding indoor servicesSeveral weeks ago, Poway leaders launched their own initiative to allow for outdoor operations. Mayor Steve Vaus said they’ve already gotten businesses that are using the park space for fitness classes. Of course, social distancing will have to be followed and masks will be required. And they’ll set aside a space for you. And with proper insurance coverage you can use that space for your activities.”County Supervisor Dianne Jacob is looking to expand this option at the county level. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police are investigating how a teenager ended up unconscious near a Walgreens store in Chollas View after her mother reported the girl had been kidnapped.The 13-year-old girl's mother called police shortly after 4 p.m. Monday and said her daughter was supposed to be at a friend’s house, but she later learned her daughter somehow ended up with a man she didn’t know.It is unclear how the woman determined her daughter was with the man.About 20 minutes later, police found the teen unconscious but breathing in the 600 block of Euclid Avenue. She was taken to the hospital, but her condition is unknown.Police said they are looking for the man that was believed with the teen. He is described as Hispanic, in his early 20s, with long hair. He was wearing reading glasses, a white T-shirt and possibly a black baseball cap. 860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear.The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid.It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below.It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359
