SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Clairemont man convicted of stabbing his mother to death was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison Friday.Joseph Robert Burks, 31, was convicted in June of first-degree murder in the July 24, 2017, slaying of his 58-year-old mother, Angela Burks, who was a longtime Otay Ranch High School science teacher.Police say Burks used a stun gun to incapacitate his mother, before stabbing her more than 20 times in the head, neck, and throat at the home they shared.RELATED: 499
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 6,000-gallon tanker carrying highly flammable ethanol overturned in Mission Valley Thursday afternoon, prompting a hazmat response. The tanker overturned near the intersection of San Diego Mission Road and Rancho Mission Road near SDCCU Stadium after 3:30 p.m. The entrance to the stadium was closed as crews cleared the scene. Authorities said 40-60 gallons of ethanol spilled and made their way to a nearby storm drain. Crews were able to prevent the ethanol from entering the San Diego River.According to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, crews drilled into the tank to remove additional fuel.The driver was injured as a result of the crash and was taken to the emergency room. His injuries are unknown at this time. SDFRD officials said the driver tried to make a 90-degree turn when the semi overturned. At around 2 a.m. Friday, crews were able to move the truck upright.Roads that were closed by the incident were expected to be reopened by 6 a.m. 986
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2-year-old girl allegedly abducted by her father in Chollas View, triggering an area Amber Alert, was found safe in Escondido Tuesday morning, San Diego police said.According to police, young Charli-Fae Harris was last seen with her father, Lafayette Harris, in the 1000 block of 47th Street at around 5:30 p.m. Monday.Police were notified of the girl’s disappearance by her mother. SDPD officials confirmed 31-year-old Lafayette Harris is under a restraining order related to domestic violence.After an Amber Alert was issued for the child and her father, police located Harris’ white Saturn vehicle in a parking garage near UC San Diego shortly before 6 a.m. However, Harris and his daughter were nowhere to be found.Harris was eventually tracked down at a construction site near UC San Diego Health System in La Jolla. ABC 10News learned Harris, who works at the construction site, was taken into custody without incident.Charli-Fae was found safe just before 8:15 a.m. in an Escondido apartment. Escondido Police said a woman connected to the child's father was watching the news when she realized she had the child police were looking for in her care, so she then called police to alert them. It's unclear if she knew the child had been taken.The girl will be reunited with her mother later Tuesday.Police said Harris will most likely face kidnapping charges and charges related to violating the restraining order against him, and said there could be more charges added as the investigation continues. 1536
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 13-year old girl, waiting for her mother to pick her up in Grant Hill, was attacked by a knife-wielding man Friday afternoon.San Diego Police are now using surveillance videos in their search for the suspect, who yanked a gold necklace from the teen's neck before making his getaway near the intersection of 26th and K Street.The girl wasn't hurt, but parents like Elizabeth Alvarado, whose twin 12-year-old daughters walk by that same spot each day, are hoping he doesn't strike again.Alvarado saw surveillance video after the principal of her daughters' school sent parents a link, suggesting they talk to their kids about staying safe.Andy Trakas of Albert Einstein Charter Middle School said the girl who was attacked wasn't one of his students, but there are several other schools in the neighborhood."We decided to be very, very proactive because the safety of our students," said Trakas, adding that all children in the community are a concern."These things can happen anywhere," Trakas said. "They can happen in La Jolla, they can happen in City Heights, they can happen in Del Sur or La Mesa, whatever, but, by being part of the community we can all work together to make sure that our eyes and ears are open so we can find out who this person is and make this place a better, safer community for our kids."Trakas suggested parents talk to their kids about being aware of their surroundings and the importance of staying in groups, not alone, after school. San Diego Police stepped up patrols in Grant Hill after school and are following every lead to catch the thief.The suspect is describe as a black male five feet, eight inches tall with a stocky build who was wearing a plain black hooded sweatshirt, a black cloth covering the lower portion of his face and dark-colored pants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A City Heights elementary school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning following reports of gunfire in the area.San Diego Police responded to the call of shots fired near Colina del Sol Park at 5319 Orange Avenue just after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.Fay Elementary - located across the street from the park - was placed on a precautionary lockdown, according to police. The lockdown was lifted within an hour.Two individuals were detained following the reports, but police did not confirm whether they were associated with the shooting. Police did say they are searching for one more individual.Police recovered shell casings at the scene, but would not say how many were recovered. No injuries have been reported.SDPD officers were on the scene Wednesday afternoon investigating. 840
