SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's next big attraction is on track to open later this spring.Construction on the park's Tidal Twister roller coaster is set to be completed in May of this year, the park said Wednesday. The roller coaster is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind coaster with a figure-8, horizontal design and dueling trains in which riders sit both backward and forward.Tidal Twister will take riders on a journey as if they're riding the tide, accelerating 30 miles an hour, twisting and banking on a figure-8 track, and crossing an opposite facing train in the middle of the attraction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council Monday approved a key step in turning Horton Plaza into The Campus at Horton. At Monday night’s meeting, the council approved reducing the current retail deed restriction on the property, creating the opportunity to build the office space. The campus would combine employment, entertainment and retail. According to a news release, the office space would be large enough for 3,000 to 4,000 jobs. Zee Munir is in San Diego to display a giant touchscreen system. It puts everything teachers need for lessons at their fingertips. Teachers can record lessons and even have an extra set of eyes. “The cameras would show whether the student is paying attention or not dozing off or not,” Munir said. The first-of-its-kind event is designed to make it easier for governments to identify and use the smart innovations, which include parking meters, license plates, and even vacuums. Snajeet Pandit of Qualcomm said San Diego is where much of the smart tech begins. “San Diego compared to other cities adopted tech much faster rather than waiting and watching so they are at the cutting edge of deploying tech,” Pandit said. 882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Pride is calling for video submissions that will be incorporated into their live-streamed event in July, in lieu of in-person gatherings. They are requesting people submit 15-30 second videos describing what Pride means to them. “We’ve learned as a movement and community that sharing personal stories is what pulls at hearts and minds and can help shape policy,” said Fernando Lopez, the Executive Director of SD Pride. But he also said he wants to make sure that even though the event will be virtual, it still creates a place for the LGBT community to express themselves. “What we’re doing is asking everyone to participate,” said Lopez. “One of the things that makes Pride special and unique is that we ask everyone from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and to be together in community. We’re trying to do that but do it in a different way.” The videos will be incorporated into their live broadcast on July 18. As a year-round educational and advocacy organization, Lopez said SD Pride has already moved a lot of its events online. In doing so, he said they’ve actually been able to expand their reach. “When we’d have an educational forum, you’d get 40-80 people in a room,” he estimated. Now he says they are drawing thousands of people to their online forums.“We’re producing more programming than we have ever before and reaching more people than we ever have before,” said Lopez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego State University kicked off its 2020-21 school year Monday with almost all classes online in an attempt to keep students safe and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.While most classes are virtual this fall semester, there are many students who are still living on campus or having to go to school for other matters.Normally, SDSU would have about 7,500 students living on campus. As of the start of this school year, that number is down to 2,600.In addition to the lower number of students living on campus, the university created strict rules for moving in and having guests.The school is trying a positive messaging approach and hoping they can avoid outbreaks similar to what has happened at other colleges in the U.S.ABC 10News learned one SDSU student tested positive for the virus last week and is in self isolation.SDSU fraternities have imposed their own ban on social events this fall, and all recruitment events will be virtual with no in-person interaction.Fall sports have also been postponed due to the pandemic.The university is not testing students who arrive on campus, but testing is available on site.If students test positive or are exposed to COVID-19, SDSU has a detailed isolation and quarantine plan in place.As if having to deal with the pandemic wasn’t enough for SDSU -- students ABC 10News talked to weren't aware of the nationwide Zoom outages Monday, as classes were just beginning, and the school did not immediately responded as to whether the issues affected any of the first day's classes. 1562
