LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — The La Mesa community has continued to show its strength and resilience. But as we head into the weekend, the city's 7 p.m. curfew continues and some fear there could be more violent riots.Colorful murals now cover La Mesa businesses, destroyed by rioters and looters last weekend. For Kenny Siler, Friday is a big win. "It means the world to be able to come in here," Siler said.He drove his legally blind friends to the Vons grocery store on the first day it reopened. "If there's a good sale, [I get] a whole bunch of Gatorade, and if there's a good chunk of meat I can smoke," he laughed. He's one of the hundreds of La Mesans supporting local businesses as soon as they can. Some shop, some clean, some donate.Next to Vons, California Coast Credit Union still has not reopened. "Both ATM's and inside, everything has been just butchered," the credit union's Sr. VP of Communications, Rene McKee said.They were victims of the riots, but they are also stepping up to help. Friday, the credit union donated ,000 to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund. The online Gofundme account continues to grow every hour, far past the original goal of ,000."It's helping to bolster the spirits of the residents here in La Mesa and these small businesses," McKee said. While glimmers of hope begin to flicker, La Mesans still face the reality that what happened last weekend, could happen again. One hundred national guard troops continue to provide added security and prevent property damage, with 100 more on standby in case the situation worsens. For Siler, who is a proud military veteran, he hopes this weekend will bring peace and order. "I support my constitution," Siler said. "Protest. But don't do what you've done," he pointed at the boarded-up walls.The money donated to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund will be collected on June 25, 2020. Any La Mesa businesses affected by the riots can contact the East County Chamber of Commerce to apply for support funds. 2019

(KGTV) - Fire crews battled powerful winds on the fifth day of the Holy Fire, and finally gained ground on the 19,107 acre blaze.The fight Friday night was far from over as red hot embers glowed in the evening. Crews fear winds overnight could whip up flames.RELATED: Holy Fire: More than 20,000 evacuated as fast-moving wildfire races into Riverside CountyNeighbors heard the buzz of chainsaws as crews worked to build yet another firebreak up steep hills, hoping to protect nearby neighborhoods.One neighbor stayed behind to protect his block and described the blaze as it raged feet from homes Friday afternoon, "it’s just like Dantes inferno right now with the heat and the flames and the smoke," Scott Helmer said. "Twenty minutes ago this wasn’t even like this, you know it exploded."The fire grew more than 8,000 acres from Thursday evening, fueled by powerful, constantly changing winds, making the fight even more dangerous for firefighters. As of Friday night the fire was 19,107 acres and 10 percent contained. The smoke blackened the sky and ash rained down in clumps, making it difficult to breathe. They have their fire fighters in the air, airstrike, on the ground and they’re, they just saved most of our structures," Feeney said, knowing the work fire crews have done is making progress. 1961

Las Vegas police are reporting that a cook at the Bellagio hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip, Alex Hernandez, was arrested on one count of embezzlement on Feb. 26 for reportedly taking food home.Bellagio security informed officers that Hernandez had been caught stuffing 25 lobster tails in his backpack and walking out the back door with them.The lobster tails were valued at around each, making the total haul worth about ,875.  456

(KGTV) -- The family of a La Mesa woman says their mother in a medically induced coma after getting shot with a projectile that lodged between her eyes.Leslie Furcron was among thousands of people protesting Saturday night in front of the La Mesa Police Department. She was recording on Facebook Live. You can hear her yelling, then the phone drops, and the screen goes black."She was brutally attacked on a peaceful protest. If I commit a crime. I'm going to jail, no if's and or buts about it," said one of her sons, Ahmed Furcron.He says bystanders rushed her to the hospital. Her prognosis is unclear, but the family says she may lose an eye.Attorney Dante Pride is representing the family. Pride and other family members held a news conference outside the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday. "We are going to get justice. We will not be silenced, everyone who is watching this I want you to call the La Mesa police department and ask them what is that officer's name who decided he could attempt to murder a non-violent protestor?" asked Pride.Pride says the police department hasn't provided any information about what happened. The family believes she was hit with a rubber bullet or bean bag casing, but they're waiting for the hospital to confirm.During the news conference, a reporter said they had witness information that Furcron through a bottle, but the family says that is absolutely false."I have no evidence that she threw anything, she dropped a can when she got shot," said Pride."Even if she did throw a can, does she deserve to get shot in the face, that's all we want to know," said Ahmed.Pride also points to the La Mesa Police Departments' own training rules, which say bean bag munitions should not be aimed above the waist. "Why is supposed to be below the waist, a shot above the chest can be fatal," said Pride.La Mesa Police have refused to talk to the media about the incident. 1931

LEMON GROVE (KGTV) -- People are being asked to avoid a busy intersection in Lemon Grove following a natural gas line break Monday afternoon.The affected area is along the 6900 block of Federal Avenue, officials said.Fire officials issued the warning at around 2:45 p.m. They are warning people to avoid the area for about two hours while crew work to repair the break.It's unclear what caused the break.Stay with 10News for updates on this developing story.   488
