SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Professional lacrosse player Jules Heningburg joined the San Diego Seals and played with the team until the season was cut short due to coronavirus. The athlete said his aunt works for the CDC, so he’s taken the virus seriously since the beginning.“I was following the rules there, I was wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing my hands, I really didn’t see anyone other than my roommate,” said Heningburg.He said even when some businesses moved further into reopening in San Diego, he continued his carefulness.“I had to just make sure I was going to keep myself safe, so I continued to follow quarantine on my own protocol, not going out. I didn’t go to bars, I didn’t do anything like that, I didn’t go to any restaurants,” he said.Then, as rules continued to relax, he went to one single birthday party, then found out later that someone at the party had tested positive. A few days later and he knew something was wrong with him.“I was having a conversation and all of a sudden I got really tired, like mid talk at 6:30 at night,” he said.He tested positive and said at first his symptoms were not terrible. Once he was not contagious, he traveled to Utah to play in a lacrosse league, and since he had previously tested positive, he had to do extra doctors visits. That’s when he realized the impacts on his health were worse that he thought. His oxygen levels quickly fell during tests.“As a professional athlete and someone who is in really good shape, when you start moving around that level should not drop. When I started to walk around those levels started to drop,” he said.He said with levels dropping this rapidly, he had an increased risk of cardiac arrest. He then realized how close he came to losing his life, thankful he had done the extra tests that showed he had a problem.“I followed all the rules and I was still put in a situation and exposed to it and could have died,” he said.This meant exercising and playing were not an option, so ultimately Heningburg has to sit out from the Utah league. He came back to San Diego to rest and heal, then will figure out when it’s safe for him to play again.He said he wants to send a message to San Diego that the virus is dangerous and he, a young and athletic man who almost lost his life, is proof. 2306

SAN DIEGO (KGVT) -- Parents of San Diego Unified School District students will hold a demonstration Tuesday with a goal for the school district to return to full-time, in-person education as soon as possible.Parent and family therapist Gina Smith said she started the group called "Reopen SDUSD" because she is frustrated that other San Diego County districts have set reopening dates, and many private schools are already open. The group has already started a petition which has more than 650 signatures."What sparked the fire is that other schools have reopening plans within weeks and San Diego Unifed has been silent," Smith said.San Diego Unified has not released any definitive dates or a timeline for reopening.Currently, the district is reporting a projected loss of 2,474 students. Two out of every three un-enrolled students are kindergartners. Enrolling children into kindergarten is not mandatory in the state of California.The district has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, and before that meeting, hundreds of parents are expected to rally over their concerns about distance learning. Some parents say they're concerned about the mental health impact distance learning is having on their children."The isolation and lack of social interaction is a huge part that many children as young as five are experiencing depressive symptoms", Smith said. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Diego-based rancher says their business has grown as the corporate meat industry struggles.In the past months, Doug Lindamood, of SonRise Ranch, says they've seen their ranch experience a surge in business.“Surprisingly, in an odd set of circumstances, we’ve had a ranch that’s been very successful during these times,” he said. He said their business has easily tripled since the beginning of the pandemic. They’ve seen more people seeking food safety, so they’re buying meat in bulk. The ranch typically sells about 10-12 half or full cows a year, but that’s recently increased to 10-12 a week. This boost comes as the industrial meat industry is hurting across the country. Lindamood said a handful of companies produce a majority of the meat in the U.S. and the big players have been hit with sick employees, causing closures and less supply. “Highly consolidated plants being affected by basically a pandemic which then has the potential to shut down a vast portion of our production,” he said. Lindamood adds this has been a ticking time bomb that needs to be addressed. “For every one of those small plants that shut down over the last 20 or 30 years, we lost a small piece of our soul with respect to connecting to our consumers,” Lindamood said. “We need not one or 10 of me — which there are maybe five or six of us in the Southern California region. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - A modern way to recycle your cell phones is meant to be good for the environment and a good way for you to make a little money, but some people worry the real winners could be thieves. 10News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner visited ecoATM's company headquarters in Sorrento Valley to ask about the controversial kiosks. The company has more than a dozen kiosks around the City of San Diego and thousands of more kiosks across the country. The kiosks buy unwanted devices like cell phones.Less than one percent of sold devices get stolen but some cities have banned the kiosks because of security concerns, a spokesperson told 10News.In San Diego, the booths are located in busy shopping areas like inside the Ralph's in the Midway District and inside the Fashion Valley mall."We offer cash on the spot at our kiosks," says ecoATM's Chase Freeman.Retired law enforcement officer Phil Ramos says, "It's a great, convenient thing for a legitimate consumer, but it really invites crime. It's an easy, quick way for bad guys to make money." The concern is that criminals can make money by trying to sell stolen or fake phones.10News asked Freeman if his system is bulletproof?"I don't think that any system out there is bulletproof but what I can tell you is that we're very on top of every transaction," he responds.The ecoATM kiosks have been banned in Baltimore and in Riverside after backlash from law enforcement. 10News obtained a copy of a photo taken this August by a concerned citizen in Las Vegas. The background of the image shows a stack of phones on top of an ecoATM kiosk.In the frame of the photo, you can see the elbow, leg, and the shoe of a man who reportedly brought those phones to the ecoATM kiosk.10News asked Freeman about that man. "It seems that many of those devices were, in fact, fake devices," says Freeman. On the day the photo was taken, the man apparently sold 13 devices but only four of them were real phones.EcoATM says it didn't contact police because none of the phones were reported as stolen. Freeman says that the man is now banned from making any sales at the kiosks.Georgia police report that a 17-year-old used a stolen ID to cash in on 26 stolen phones. She was later caught and prosecuted with the help of ecoATM. "Every transaction that is conducted at a kiosk across the country is kept in a database that is available to local law enforcement," says Freeman.The company reports that 8,993 devices were purchased in San Diego from January 1st, 2019 to October 1st, 2019, but only 27 were of investigative interest and requested by law enforcement. The San Diego Police Department couldn't tell 10News how many stolen phones have been found at ecoATMs because it doesn't track the location of recovery.Freeman tells 10News that there are extensive security measures in place. Some of those measures include a camera that takes your photo while your driver's license is verified. For many kiosks, you have to provide a fingerprint. Live agents are constantly monitoring all transactions.The company says that the nationwide sale of stolen devices is a very minor issue. "It's something that does not happen frequently at all. (KGTV)- Video of a disturbing racist rant was captured in downtown San Diego Tuesday, and the man who experienced the verbal attack is sharing his story.Rodney Jackson was working as a security guard outside of the Pinnacle on the Park apartment complex in the East Village when an unidentified woman began hurling racial slurs at him.“I was trying my best to diffuse the situation, and she just continued to antagonize,” said Jackson. “It kind of caught me off guard because I’ve never dealt with anything like that before.”RELATED: Mother responds to video showing woman hurling racial slurs at son (VIDEO)In the video he recorded, the woman repeatedly attacks Jackson with racial slurs, even after he asks her to stop.“I started recording just to save myself because of everything going on,” he said.The unprovoked verbal attack happened in the early morning hours on Tuesday.Jackson said the woman was kicked out of a party at the high rise.“She went outside and started arguing with some people walking back, I asked her to come in the building, and I’ll call her a cab,” he said.He said she appeared to be intoxicated and suddenly directed her anger at him.“I told her again, ‘I called you a cab, but I don’t agree with the way you’re calling me all these different names’ and she just continues.”The video shows the woman calling Jackson the N-word repeatedly during the confrontation.“If you’re going to act like a n-----, then I’m going to call you n-----,” the unidentified woman shouts at Jackson. “I don’t [expletive] care!”Jackson remains calm and composed as the woman continues to harass him.“My mother and my grandmother, they raised me never to let anyone get me too upset to where it gets me out of character or changes the person that I am,” he said. “They raised me to be a strong black man.”Jackson said he grew up in National City in a multi-cultural neighborhood, and this was his first time experiencing something like this.“I’ve never looked at people by their color,” he said. “I played semi-pro football for a San Diego team, and we had people from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds, and we’re all just a family.”Jackson’s brother and mother shared the video on social media to highlight the issue of racism.He said he hopes the painful video will serve as a reminder that racism does still exists, even in that community.“Be open-minded and accept people for who they are. The stronger everyone comes together, the better the world will be,” he said.He wants anyone who has experienced racism to remember this: “Stand strong for yourself and don’t ever let anyone belittle you or make you feel like less of a person.” 2669
