SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is dead after a hit-and-run driver struck him on Interstate 5 near Old Town overnight.Officers said the man was found lying dead in the middle of the highway at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday, prompting a closure of I-5 lanes for several hours.Only a bumper was found near the man, officers said. The man was not immediately identified.The suspected car, a 2004 Honda Accord, was located nearby at a gas station off the highway. Officer said they have the vehicle's license plate as well.The driver has yet to be located. 568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A restaurant and dollar store were damaged Sunday morning after a fire started in Lincoln Park.The fire started inside the Herencias Mexican Food restaurant around 6 a.m. on the 5000 block of Logan Avenue.Crews arrived on scene and the fire was knocked out by 8 a.m.No one was inside the restaurant at the time of the blaze, but fire crews say a neighboring Family Dollar store was damaged.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 463

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A program at the East Mesa Reentry facility is helping inmates transition out of jail and back into the workforce.This program is offering inmates certificates in trades which include welding, construction, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and more. The participants study and earn these certificates for free. The reentry program is helping over 700 men head back into the workforce in a positive way.“It’s something that they can give back to the community later on in life, where at one point they took away, but now they feel like they actually achieved something,” said Detron Williams. Williams is a few months away from earning a trade certificate in construction.The reentry program not only focuses on education but also helps inmates understand their emotions and build confidence. “They’ve built the confidence now, and they have learned the different techniques so that when they are out in the community they can either start a new life or they can go back to the work that they previously had,” Matt Russo said.For Williams and the other inmates he has talked to, this program also provides a sense of accomplishment.“Now they are building structures that later on in the future they can drive by and say I built that, I helped that,” Williams said. 1301

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A newly-released poll shows key San Diego County races are undecided ahead of the June 5 primary election.Many of the 1,100 voters questioned in the scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll showed no clear preference for non-partisan positions including District Attorney, Sheriff, and County Assessor.DISTRICT ATTORNEYSummer Stephan, the interim San Diego County District Attorney, held 35 percent of the vote to Genevieve Jones-Wright’s 22 percent. Stephan led among Republicans, white voters, and those over 35 years old. Jones-Wright led among Democrats, and Latino and younger voters. 43 percent of voters were undecided in the race.Stephan was appointed by the Board of Supervisors last year to fill the remainder for Bonnie Dumanis’ term. Jones-Wright is a Deputy Public Defender. The two have met in several public forums.  SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFFIncumbent Sheriff Bill Gore led Sheriff’s Department commander Dave Meyers by 10 percent in the poll. However, 33 percent of voters were undecided.Gore had stronger support from senior citizens, white voters and conservatives.  COUNTY ASSESSOR/RECORDER/COUNTY CLERKThe countywide election pitting incumbent Ernest Dronenburg Jr. against ethics attorney Matt Strabone shows voters were essentially tied, with a 6.3 percent margin of error. Dronenburg held 20 percent of the vote to Strabone’s 17 percent.An overwhelming 63 percent of voters were undecided.  VOTER BREAKDOWN84 percent of those surveyed said they were registered to vote in California. 14 percent were not, and 2 percent were not sure.About half of San Diegans said they would definitely vote in the June 5 election. About a fourth said they would likely vote. A combined 11 percent said they were unlikely or certain not to vote.According to the Registrar of Voters, 75 percent of those eligible to vote in the county are registered. Of those registered, 37 percent are registered Democrats, 29 percent are registered Republicans and another 29 percent are Independent. As far as voter turnout for the June Primary, over the last 30 years, the highest number of voters to turn out was 40 percent in 1990.  DO POLITICAL PARTIES MAKE A DIFFERENCE?The Survey USA pollsters asked San Diegans if political parties impacted how they planned to vote in the elections. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Point Loma woman says while her family was sleeping, someone was in her home stealing from them.Tucked away on a hill along scenic La Crescentia Drivel, the serenity was interrupted when Teresa Cesear and her husband got up around 5 a.m. Wednesday."Panic, absolutely panic," said Cesear.Cesear says her purse and laptop bag — computer inside — were not where she had placed them on her kitchen stool.Reality quickly set in. Those items didn't disappear on their own. "My entire personal and work life were in those two bags. Then came the fear and sense of violation," said Cesear.The violation happened quietly as she, her husband, and her grown son slept."The police said that they must have looked in the window. There's a nightlight in the kitchen, so they see my laptop and purse and somehow got this locked kitchen door open," said Cesear.Among the missing items were credit cards, keys and one special key: The original key to her 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia."Really sad ... It's an important part of it because it's a very unique key," said Cesear.The break-in is the second burglary in her cul-de-sac in the past few months.
