(KGTV) — Is Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom avoiding the debate stage? That's the accusation from Republican rival John Cox who says Newsom has agreed to only one debate thus far, despite several opportunities being offered.Newsom tells 10News he has already been part of four debates with Cox but critics point out that was during the primary campaign with other candidates sharing the stage.Newsom tells 10News he prefers meeting with people at town halls where there's more time for interaction with the audience and less grandstanding.RELATED: Gavin Newsom, John Cox to face off in November General Election"Candidly, the last three out of four of our debates, looked like Jerry Springer shows than substantive dialogue," said Newsom. But political analyst Kevin Riggs says its no surprise Newsom is shying away from debates at this point in the race."He's ahead in the polls, he's ahead in the fundraising, at this point his campaign is an exercise in risk management," said Riggs. "His campaign is going to look at this invitation and say, 'What's in it for us?' and the answer is, not much."Riggs says every time Newsom puts himself side by side with Cox, he raises his opponent's profile and gives him a chance to gain ground."Cox needs the exposure," said Riggs, "He needs to be on the same stage with Gavin Newsom."Which is why, says Riggs, the Cox campaign has agreed to multiple debate offers, while Newsom has so far declined or not responded to all but the one offer from CNN.So what can Cox do about it?  Riggs says, "If you're John Cox you try and shame your opponent and try and talk about the fact you are ignoring voters, you're snubbing voters." The Cox campaign did release a statement this week, accusing Newsom of just that, saying he doesn't want to talk about the issues Californians care about. The two are set to meet for the first — perhaps only — one-on-one debate Oct. 1 on CNN. 1967

(KGTV) — Washington state health officials say a patient has died of the novel coronavirus, the first COVID-19 related death in the United States. The victim was described as a male patient at EvergreenHealth Medical Center, who was in his 50s with underlying medical conditions. The governor of Washington state declared a state of emergency Saturday after a man's death.More than 50 people in a Kirkland, Wash., Life Care nursing facility are sick and being tested for the virus, health officials added. Two people — a woman in her 40s who works at the facility and a resident in her 70s — have tested positive for the virus.RELATED COVERAGE: Coronavirus: Everything you need to knowUC San Diego, SDSU cancel South Korea study abroad programs due to coronavirusSan Diego County now able to test for coronavirusSan Diego-based Olympic hopefuls undeterred by coronavirus threatSome Americans refusing to buy or drink Corona beer amid coronavirus outbreak, according to surveyThe new virus is part of the coronavirus family and is related to the SARS and MERS viruses that have caused outbreaks in the past. Officials say COVID-19 can cause a fever, coughing, wheezing, and pneumonia, and spreads mainly from droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to influenza.Earlier this week, officials say three patients infected by the virus through unknown means were reported. Those patients — an older Northern California woman with chronic health conditions, a high school student in Everett, Washington and an employee at a Portland, Oregon-area school, according to the AP — hadn't traveled overseas recently or had any known contact to someone who is infected. The California Department of Public Health said Friday that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would provide the state with enough test kits to test up to 1,200 people a day for the virus.Worldwide there are about 83,000 COVID-19 cases and have been 2,800 deaths, many of which have been in China. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 2044

“They’re at less than 50% of their ideal body weight. They are incredibly compromised and many times, it’s an end of life scenario where they’ve been told, there’s nothing else that can be done for them,” said Jennifer PetersonPeterson is describing the state her patients are often in by the time she’s starts treating those dying from an eating disorder. She’s a registered nurse with Angel Med Flight, an air ambulance company. Her team makes frequent trips to drop off patients at the Denver Health Acute Center for Eating Disorders.“They’re the first and only medical inpatient eating disorder program in the United States,” she said.“The Acute program at Denver Health takes care of the most medically compromised eating disorder patients from certainly the United States,” said Dr. Philip Mehler, the director and founder of Acute. He says the center turned to Angel Med when a patient died after being transported by a different air ambulance provider.“She died and shouldn’t have died because the issue that happened was preventable if they had followed the guidelines that were set up,” said Dr. Mehler.During COVID-19, numbers have shot up both for the number of patients visiting Acute, and those being transported by Angel Med.“Our admissions went up, I think, because the residential treatment centers were hesitant to take these people, they don’t have the infection control things in place that we can do on our unit,” said Mehler.“The six months prior to the COVID pandemic we were roughly transporting three patients per month. And since March that has increased to about 8 patients,” said Peterson.Isolation can cause anxiety and depression. Both be contributing factors to eating disorders. The National Eating Disorders Association Helpline says their chat queries increased by more than 80 percent between April 2019 and April 2020.Angel Med attributes their increases to patients not wanting to travel to Denver commercially during the pandemic with compromised health.“Many people are nervous about flying commercially, concerned about seeking care at a hospital, or concerned about getting treatment for a specific issue because of the potential for potentially contracting COVID,” said Peterson. For Peterson, being able to work with Acute is a special opportunity.“These cases always are heartbreaking, every single time. And knowing that we may help save their life if we get them to Acute, it may be treatment that they’ve never had before or an option that they’ve never had before. So it’s a pretty incredible thing to say that you’ve actually saved someone’s life,” said Peterson. 2616
