SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While San Diego has several desirable neighborhoods, Solana Beach may take the cake. That's according to a recent survey by financial website 24/7 Wall St., which named the coastal city one of the best places to live in America. Solana Beach ranked seventh on the list of 50 cities, based on its walkability, commute times, and attractions."Located less than 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, area residents have access to jobs and entertainment located in the major urban area," the website wrote. "The city is also home to one of only three train stations in San Diego County, providing commuters more options. For recreation, the city boasts 1.7 miles of beach, and a higher than average per capita concentration of restaurants, gyms, museums, and movie theaters."The website used data affordability, economy, quality of life, and community to develop its best cities list. Things like crime rates, number of restaurants, employment, income, taxes and home value, and health care statistics all factored into the site's analysis.Cities that made the list included:1. Manhattan Beach, Calif.2. Winnetka, Ill.3. Hanover, N.H.4. Highland Park, Texas5. Piedmont, Calif.6. Paradise Valley, Ariz.7. Solana Beach, Calif.8. Newport Beach, Calif.9. Mercer Island, Wash.10. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Whether you’re in college, about to start, or thinking about going back, your choice of major can be tough to decide. It becomes even more complicated when figuring out the best use of your skills and the career path that will pay the bills. “I think STEM majors are very important because that’s kind of the direction we are heading toward,” said Andrea Villanueva, a first-generation college student at UC San Diego majoring in Global Health. Villanueva has her sights set on medical school, hoping to become an OB/GYN. The median income for the career in San Diego County is 5,000. Not everyone will choose to head down the medical route. “If what you’re looking to do is get a career right out of college that’s going to pay well, then you might want to think about a major that’s going to give you some hard skills,” said Daniel Enemark, an encomiast with San Diego Workforce.RELATED: UC San Diego tops for female STEM graduates According to the San Diego Workforce Partnership, there are seven priority job sectors in San Diego County that are high-wage, high-growth, and in-demand. The priority sectors are areas of the economy that have at least 10,000 jobs in priority occupations which must meet three critical criteria: · Annual openings are above average· Projected growth is high than the average at 6%· Entry-level hourly wage is at least The seven priority job sectors in San Diego County are: 1. Education and Human Development2. Health Care3. Public Administration4. Energy/Construction & Utilities5. Life Science R&D6. Advanced Manufacturing7. ICT & Digital MediaThe most significant area of growth is expected to be in the education and human development field, which is estimated to have 70,000+ people working by 2022 in priority occupations. If that isn’t an area of interest, there are plenty of other fields people can explore that are growing and offer competitive wages. RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting the most out of college financial aid “We see that a lot of the high paying jobs for young people involve technical skills. That may be engineering or that might be computer science, coding or programming,” said Enemark. According to the priority jobs occupation report, entry-level civil engineers, electrical engineers, aerospace engineers, and software developers make between to an hour. These are occupations that do require a bachelor’s degree. But, entry-level plasters and stucco masons make almost an hour with no formal education required. For Villanueva, her drive for success is staying true to her passion.“It’s a challenge, but I think it is well worth it. It was good to know that financially if I go down this path, I would be pretty well off. But the biggest motivation for me was helping people in a way that is, so hands-on and you’re making a huge impact in someone’s life,” said Villanueva. RELATED: San Diego's median rent more than starting salaries for Class of 2019 According to Enemark, finding the right balance is key.“Finding a job that exists at the intersection between what people are good at, what they enjoy doing and what pays well, that’s the goal,” said Enemark. 3249

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans fled Hurricane Lane's path taking flights Thursday evening from the Hawaiian islands to California. The first time a hurricane will make landfall on the islands since 1992, inspiring fear in vacationers and those who are hunkering down.RELATED: San Diego rescue teams head to Hawaii for Hurricane Lane"Some of the rain would be so loud you couldn’t even talk, you’d be yelling at one another," Steven Bohn said. He moved from San Diego to the big island two years ago for his fiance, who is attending pharmacy school. He said the bands of weather leading up to the brunt of the storm started hitting faster, leaving shorter windows of respite."It looks like it might be coming back pretty soon I don’t think I want to stand out here too long," Bohn said. "The floodwaters have completely destroyed the Bayfront. The downtown road area, there’s no access there whatsoever the cops have blocked that off."He's an occupational therapist and told 10News he was making calls earlier in the day, checking on his clients and ensuring they didn't need medications or help evacuating. He said emergency crews patrolled the area about every 45 minutes, keeping everyone safe. Other signs of disaster preparation were visible in stores, full of bare shelves.Bohn said they're prepared."We’ll be staying indoors," he said. "Closing all the windows and pulling all the shades down in case of the glass."Bohn believes Hawaiians will endure, and said "I’m just hoping that Oahu, Maui, Kawai even the small island of Lanai, they all are going to be okay, and hunker down and get ready for a rough one."In San Diego, passengers sighed a breath of relief as they waited at baggage claim."We have kindergarten starting for my little daughter here on Monday, she’s very excited, and it’s important we made it back," Essam Khouri said. His in-laws are still on Maui. He said their flight was canceled and they're sheltering in place until they can fly back on Saturday.Carolyn Krebs said they made the decision Tuesday, after seeing the latest hurricane path projection, to cut their vacation short."We called Alaska airlines and changed our flight and paid a lot of extra money but at the end of the day it was a good call we’re home safe," Krebs said.Everyone was thankful to be home safe. 2380
