DETROIT, Mich. - Halloween activities, like costume parties and trick-or-treating, will look much different this year because of the pandemic. Some families might be looking for new traditions like going from house to house checking out Halloween decorations at a safe distance.There is one home in Grosse Pointe Farms that is a must-see.For 24 years, Mark Van Sile and his wife go all out for Halloween. Their home sits on the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Moross Road. With thousands of LED lights and tons of spooky decorations, it has become an attraction!“It means more to people this year than in the past because it is a sign of normalcy,” Mark said.He puts up the lights and decorations himself. He’s in real estate and construction and rents equipment. Mark says it takes 80 hours to decorate about ,000 worth of props and lights.Every year, the Vane Sile couple would dress up and pass out full-size candy bars to 1,400 trick-or-treaters. But because of the pandemic, they are keeping safe and won’t be hosting trick-or-treaters.This year, people are welcome to walk up the driveway and check out all the spooky sights at a safe distance.“People are truly enthusiastic about it,” Mark said.It is not just Halloween, they go big on Independence Day and Christmas.Mark has so many decorations, he built his own storage room. The homeowner is so festive, he was featured in a Valero Energy commercial for putting up half a million lightsMark says he’s happy when all of his efforts bring smiles and lasting memories for little ones.“When you have Halloween decorations, you have Christmas decorations, it’s for everybody to enjoy," he said. "Take a step back, relax. DENVER, Colo. - A group of teenagers is using social media to try to inspire younger generations to sign up to work at the election polls this November.The Poll Hero Project was started by a group of teens from Denver East High School as well as students from Princeton University as a way to inspire their peers to get involved.“I never really expected it to go anywhere. I mean, we don’t really have any money or really any advertising. It’s really just been using social media to get our message out,” said Leo Kamin, one of the project’s co-founders.Kamin is a 17-year-old who signed up to be a poll worker during the previous election for the first time after mother found out about the student poll worker program through the Colorado Secretary of State’s website and encouraged him to join.In Colorado, you must be 16 in order to serve as a poll worker. It is a paid position.“It really did open my eyes just to the process and how many things you have to have right,” Kamin said.Along with learning the intricacies of how the election process works, Kamin says he was able to bring his own set of skills to the polling place.“In Colorado, you can change your registration on your phone, and I was the only one of the greeters, the poll workers, who understood how to sort of explaining that on the website,” Kamin said. “I think there is that knowledge that comes from the people who have done this a lot and have voted for before, but I think there are also things that younger people bring that are valuable.”Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some areas are struggling to find enough poll workers to work on election day.Colorado has not had that problem for the most part, and places like Denver and Jefferson County say they experienced record interest this election.Still, the teens are using social media to encourage students across the country to check in with their counties to see whether they need help.One of the students who decided to sign up to be a poll worker for the first time is Ben Ginsberg. He’s still going through the training process to be ready for election day but says he’s excited about the opportunity.“I thought it was a great opportunity to help out and play my part,” Ginsberg said.Along with being a first-time poll worker, Ginsberg is also a first-time voter in this general election after participating in the primary.“I’m super excited to vote in the presidential election. It’s even more important than the primaries obviously. I think that was kind of my way to express my personal views,” Ginsberg said.He believes there is more interest in politics these days among his peers and many of his friends are excited for the opportunity to vote.Kamin is not so lucky; he missed the age deadline to be able to vote this election by just a couple of weeks. Still, Kamin says he’s excited to be able to have an opportunity to contribute.“I feel like because I can’t vote it makes it even more important to participate,” he said. “There are not many things you can do as a 17-year-old but this is one of them.”He’s still surprised by just how much popularity the project has garnered despite the fact that they have no money for advertising and have only been using social media to get their message out.Both teens will be missing school Monday and Tuesday in order to work the polls but say they hope their teachers and classmates understand the importance of the role they are playing in democracy. They hope even more teenagers will consider signing up in the future.“Sure, you may not be in charge of the country now, but you will be in the future, and this is your country. DENVER — Denver Mayor Michael Hancock flew to Mississippi Wednesday to have Thanksgiving with his wife and daughter at his daughter's home after pleading with Denverites not to travel for the holiday if possible.On Wednesday morning, Mike Strott, deputy communications director with the Office of the Mayor, confirmed that Hancock had left the state to celebrate the holiday."As he has shared, the Mayor is not hosting his traditional large family dinner this year, but instead traveling alone to join his wife and daughter where the three of them will celebrate Thanksgiving at her residence instead of having them travel back to Denver," Strott said in a statement. "Upon return, he will follow all necessary health and safety guidance and quarantine."Hancock's trip comes at a time when more Coloradans than ever before are contagious with COVID-19. About one in 41 Coloradans are contagious with the coronavirus, up from one in 49 last week and a large increase from an estimated one in 110 in recent weeks, health officials said in a Tuesday press conference.The trip also goes against the recommendations from the CDC, who has advised Americans not to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday.On Wednesday morning, Hancock said on Scripps station KMGH in Denver that his constituents should try and celebrate the holiday with those in their own households, of possible. DESCANSO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County couple is warning others after getting a flat tire from an unusual source. Pamela Jessup was running errands last Thursday morning when she says she started hearing a thumping noise while driving her Toyota RAV4 on SR-79 near Old Highway 80.Jessup says it was then that she pulled over and looked at her back tire. After not seeing anything wrong, she went on her way.The thumping, however, only intensified after she drove onto Interstate 8. When she drove home, Jessup says her husband Davis found a temporary lane marker stuck, nailed in to the tire.While doing their due diligence, the Descanso residents found dozens of temporary nail markers along the side of the road in the same area Jessup ran into issues.A local tire shop was able to fix the damage to the tire, but it cost the pair . (KGTV) -- Leaders with SANDAG, North County Transit District, and the chair for California's Transportation Committee met Friday off 7th Street in Del Mar to get a closer look at their bluff stabilization 0 million project, now 20 years in the making. Additions include sea wall improvement and a drainage system that runs parallel to the train tracks.NCTD Executive Director Matt Tucker said "We feel really confident. It'll secure the bluffs to allow continued safe movement on the corridor and it'll give time for the exact project we want to pursue and gain, to allow funding for a permanent solution."Natural disasters like heavy rain are a big concern that would cause tracks and bluffs to crumble down. After countless collapses in the past, beachgoers like Chris Smith, are often worried.Smith told ABC 10News, "I feel comfortable but in the back of my mind you know something could always happen." He also said awareness by leaders is a plus but the tracks should be moved entirely. "With the impact to what the train is providing to the cliff, at some point there's gonna be a negative impact to it," Smith added.Leaders said the new additions will buy them about 30 years, to plan a more permanent solution which could involve moving tracks into a tunnel system.Phase 5 of the project is slated to begin next summer, while plans for phase 6, the final phase, is still in the works. 1419
