Floyd Martin's last day on the job was anything but typical. The Atlanta man retired Wednesday after working nearly 35 years as a postal carrier. The people in a suburban Atlanta neighborhood in Marietta where he's delivered the mail all these years wanted to send him out in style as he worked his route for the last time.So as his mail truck moved through the area, the neighbors gave him hugs. And gave gifts. And decorated their mailboxes in his honor. And posed for pictures with him. They even invited him to come back in the fall to be a celebrity judge in the neighborhood's Halloween parade. His daylong goodbye basically turned into a big 'ole street party that attracted more than 300 people. The neighbors even brought covered dishes, wrote neighbor (and Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter) Jennifer Brett, who accompanied him on his last day and 871
Health officials said Wednesday they are actively monitoring 16 people who came into close contact with the traveler to China who became the first U.S. resident with a new and potentially deadly virus. The man, identified as a Snohomish County, Washington, resident is in his 30s, was in good condition and wasn’t considered a threat to the public. The hospitalized man had no symptoms when he arrived at the Seattle-Tacoma airport last week, but he started feeling ill. He had traveled to China in November, flying home to Washington state Jan. 15 before the start of U.S. airport screening.Investigators will make daily phone calls to those 16 who had contact with him, including some who sat near him on his flight, to check if they have symptoms. They will not be asked to isolate themselves unless they start feeling ill. “This may be a novel virus, but this is not a novel investigation,” said John Wiesman of the Washington State Department of Health at a Wednesday briefing for reporters. The patient is doing well in an isolation unit at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, about 30 miles north of Seattle. The virus can cause coughing, fever, breathing difficulty and pneumonia 1208
Holiday parties are steadily making a comeback.During the last recession when people were getting laid off, businesses cut back. About 76% of human resources representatives polled said their company was having a holiday party this year. That's up about 7% from last year.A new survey form career website Monster found 60% of employees look forward to holiday parties. “It’s not a jail sentence,” said Monster career expert Vick Salemi. “It should be a fun party that you keep the professional scope top of mind.”Salemi says if you're considering skipping, instead treat it like a meeting. Go early and take advantage of face time with colleagues or bosses you don't normally get to interact with.“Think of it like I’m going to come prepared with two or three of my top wins and accomplishments this past year and I’m going to humble brag my way when I talk to my boss and my boss’ boss,” said Salemi. One thing you don't want to do is overindulge on alcohol if it's being served.About 14% of employees said they had regrets about drinking too much at a holiday party.Salemi says here's how you can recover:“You can just say I apologize if I offended anyone or I drank way too much I don’t remember much of the night. It was not my typically behavior and really just get in front of it and own it.”Keep in mind with any holiday parties with alcohol, make sure you don't wind up in any images doing questionable behavior.Click here for more 1451
