Oprah Winfrey first bought Weight Watchers stock in October 2015 for .5 million. Her investment is now worth more than 0 million. Not too shabby, huh? Winfrey's decision to invest in Weight Watchers nearly two and a half years ago has turned out to be a great move for her — and anyone else who bought the stock when Winfrey did and has been along for the ride ever since.Weight Watchers has pretty consistently reported earnings and sales that topped forecasts over the past few quarters, as well as big gains in subscribers. Weight Watchers did so again late Thursday, and the stock surged 5% on Friday as a result.Winfrey, who is also on the company's board and is featured in Weight Watchers ads, clearly deserves some credit for that.Weight Watchers has also benefited from its new Freestyle program, which expands the company's famous "zero points" offerings beyond fruits and vegetables to eggs, beans, chicken and seafood.CEO Mindy Grossman, who took over the top spot at Weight Watchers last year after a long stint as the head of retailer HSN, is also doing a great job convincing people that it's not just about counting calories, points and pounds.Grossman told analysts on a conference call in late February that "healthy is the new skinny," and she made a similar point after Thursday's earnings report."Our purpose is to inspire healthy habits for real life for people, families, communities, the world," Grossman said. She added that "we want to own the healthy kitchen" and "make healthy cooking accessible to everyone."That strategy is clearly working. The company has attracted more men lately because of the new Freestyle offering. Actor and writer Kevin Smith, celebrity chef Eric Greenspan and music mogul DJ Khaled are all endorsing Weight Watchers. But as the stock price of Weight Watchers has climbed, Winfrey has actually taken some of her Weight Watchers chips off the table recently. She still owns nearly 5.5 million shares. But she sold about 2 million in March at prices ranging from about to a share. She made 0 million in the process.Winfrey also donated more than 360,000 shares to her charitable organization.Investors aren't worried about the stock sales, though. Weight Watchers shares were trading around Friday and are up an astonishing 70% this year. Winfrey invested in the stock when it was trading for less than .If this whole media mogul/actress thing doesn't work out for Winfrey, it looks like she could be a top notch hedge fund manager or venture capitalist. 2541
On a lake in Bedford County, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency officer Darrell Bernd, who goes by the nickname "Bones," has formed an unlikely friendship with a wayward goose. While on duty in July, Bones found the goose tied up in fishing line, unable to get free. He freed the goose from the fishing line and brought it back to health. A co-worker gave the goose the name "Honk.""Thirty-four years ago I was hired out here just to mow grass," Bones said. "Now, here I am babysitting a goose."The best Bernd can tell, someone had Honk as a pet that imprinted on humans before the goose's owner turned it loose, unable to fend for itself in the wild.Ever since he rescued the goose, the two have been like birds of a feather, with Honk now following Bones around wherever he goes."I've actually had him following me for almost a mile," Bones said.Starting Wednesday, Goose has become Facebook famous, with his own page on the social media platform. As a wildlife expert, Bones is encouraging Honk to hang with his friends in the wild. Honk has begun spending more time with a flock of geese near Bedford Lake, sometimes gone for days at a time. Bones wants to get Honk used to the wild, so he can live on his own.But while Honk is still around, he and Bones are teaching us all something about what's good for the gander."Just a little act of kindness, that’s all it took," Bones said. "Maybe that’s something the world needs to learn today."This story was first published by Jason Lamb at WTVF in Nashville, Tennessee. 1526

Once a COVID-19 vaccine is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, it will face another hurdle before being distributed in California.Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday he has created a scientific safety review workgroup who will “independently review the safety and efficacy of any vaccine that received FDA approval for distribution,” according to his office. The workgroup is part of California’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan, which was submitted to the CDC on Friday. Every state was asked to submit an initial distribution plan to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in anticipation of when a vaccine will be widely available. 665
On Monday, the US House voted in favor of a 0 billion stimulus package that includes funds for the travel industry. Early in the pandemic, airlines were able to retain many employees during the spring in summer with assistance from the federal government as air travel has been cut by over 50% since March. That funding ran out on September 30.The stimulus provides billion through the Payroll Support Program. The program will help airlines pay workers and provide benefits for industry workers through the end of March. The funds also will help airlines transport coronavirus vaccines. In a letter to employees, United Airlines leaders said that its prepared to return thousands of employees who were furloughed in September. Those employees will be brought back on a temporary basis, United Airlines said.“As you know, involuntary furloughs were always a last resort for us and we worked really hard over the summer – through cost-cutting, capital-raising, and partnering with our unions – to make the number of people who were ultimately impacted as small as possible,” said United CEO J. Scott Kerby and President Brett Hart in a joint letter. “Now, those employees who are eligible under the terms of the PSP extension can temporarily come back to United through March 2021.”Leaders from the Association of Flight Attendants said that Monday’s bill passage should have come months ago.“Aviation is safe when we fly with the spirit that ‘we’re all in this together.’ Our AFA Government Affairs activists never stopped fighting and were joined by thousands of new Flight Attendant activists who got involved in our union to make this possible,” said the Association of Flight Attendants President Sara Nelson. “While we are getting everyone back on payroll, connected to healthcare and help to the whole country, this is just a downpayment on what’s needed for recovery. We need everyone ready to fight forward.”Due to concerns over the spread of the virus, several airlines have eliminated the middle seat on flights. Other airlines are capping the number of passengers on board flights. In addition to these restrictions, international travel is largely restricted from the US.Amid the pandemic, carriers are attempting to regain confidence in travel. Airlines are strictly enforcing mask wearing on board flights, and have been promoting sanitation efforts to eliminate the coronavirus from spreading among passengers.“We hope you find comfort in the policies we’ve implemented to keep you safe, including blocking middle seats, using electrostatic spraying on surfaces in the airport and onboard between flights, and requiring masks. Wearing a mask is the No. 1 thing each of us can do to help control the spread of the virus and protect each other,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian wrote in a letter to customers. 2824
