LOS ANGELES (AP) — Three Los Angeles police officers have been charged with falsifying records reporting that people they stopped were gang members or associates. Prosecutors say the members of the Police Department's Metropolitan Division were charged with conspiracy in a 59-count complaint with obstructing justice and multiple counts of filing a false police report and preparing false evidence. In a news release, the LA County DA's office said Braxton Shaw, Michael Coblentz, and Nicholas Martinez are the officers being charged.Prosecutors said in the statement that the officers are accused of falsifying field interview cards they use to conduct interviews while out on duty.The cards, prosecutors say, contained false information and misidentified dozens of people as a gang member.The officers' union said Friday it expects the department to ensure the officers are accorded their due process rights and that any proven mischaracterizations are corrected.The Police Department says 21 additional officers are under investigation. Officials hope this prevents dangerous overcrowding that could result in the spread of the novel coronavirus.For that same reason, the department is also prohibiting fireworks displays in the county during the holiday weekend.Beach parking lots, piers, bike paths and access points will be closed, as well.The health department says key metrics show steep increases in community spread. LONDON — Scottish police say the individual shot by armed police during an incident in Glasgow has died and that six other people including a police officer are in hospital being treated for their injuries. The officer who was injured was suffering from stab wounds, The Associated Press reports.Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson also said that the officer being treated is in “a critical but stable condition” on Friday afternoon. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County prosecutors are joining other district attorneys to use technology to wipe out 66,000 old marijuana convictions years after California voters broadly legalized the drug. The county is working with the nonprofit Code for America, which uses computer algorithms to find eligible cases that are otherwise hard to identify in old court documents. The group has offered its technology free to all of the state's 58 district attorneys. The program identifies eligible cases and automatically fills out forms to file with the courts. White said in a statement.He noted that it was critical to provide as much advance notice as possible to students and their families, as the CSU system had done in announcing its moves toward primarily virtual instruction as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.The CSU system, which locally includes CSU San Marcos and San Diego State University, announced in mid-March that its campuses would immediately transition in-person operations to a virtual mode, with the chancellor saying then that "the health and well-being of our students and employees is always a foremost priority."In September, White announced that CSU -- which held primarily virtual courses during the fall term -- would continue with predominantly online instruction for the academic term beginning in January."We are approaching planning for the 2021 fall term with the goal of having the majority of our on-campus experiences returning," said CSU Chancellor-select Joseph I.
