Safety-wise, there’s a lot riding on your tires. But many car owners don’t routinely inspect the rubber they are riding on or know what to look for.“Tires are what connects us to the road, and if they are worn, that will reduce your car’s stability and traction,” says David Bennett, AAA’s manager of repair systems. Here are five situations where experts say changes in your driving conditions, tire wear or damage are common — and easy ways to make your tires last as long as possible.1. You moved to a new place with a different climateIf you’ve recently moved from, for example, Southern California to Colorado, your driving conditions are now vastly different. And switching to winter tiresmight be in your future. But don’t wait for the first storm. If your car starts to swap ends, or spin, that’s “not a fun way to discover that you need different tires,” says Matt Edmonds, executive vice president of online retailer Tire Rack.Ask your new neighbors, or an expert at a tire store, what the locals use to stay safe on the roads. Or you can use an online tire guide and user reviews to choose new tires.2. You hit a pothole, nail or curbWhile you’re checking your tires’ pressure — which you should do at least once each month — run your hand over the tread surface to see if there are any nails stuck in the tire or cuts in the tread or sidewall, Bennett says.If you find a nail, don’t pull it out or you might wind up with a flat tire. Instead, drive to a tire repair shop and get them to pull out the nail and, if necessary, patch it.Often, tires are damaged by running over a pothole or rubbing against a curb while parking, Edmonds says. Look for bubbles or bulges that could indicate a developing problem and result in a high-speed blowout. Damage on the inside of the tire is harder to spot and might require a trip to a tire store for an expert’s inspection.3. Your tires are losing tractionTires that have lost all or most of their tread can feel fine while driving in dry conditions. But once rain or snow hits, they lose traction and braking distances increase, Bennett says.To measure tread depth, insert a quarter into the tread in the center of the tire with George Washington’s head pointing toward the tire. If the tread obscures the top of his head, your tires are in good shape. If the top of Washington’s head is even with the tread, the tires are still safe to drive on, but it’s time to start shopping for new ones, Bennett says.4. You hear tire noise, feel vibration or ‘pulling’These are all indicators that something is wrong either with your tires or, in some cases, with the alignment of your front wheels. As the tread wears, tires can become noisy, according to Edmonds.Tires that wear unevenly can cause a vibration through the car, which is commonly felt through the steering wheel. The car is pulling when it doesn’t track straight, slowly wandering either left or right. This is often caused by misaligned front wheels.5. You bought your tires more than six years agoRubber dries out over time, and even if there’s still plenty of tread, the sidewalls can crack. The date the tires were manufactured is printed on the sidewall and is usually preceded by DOT for the Department of Transportation. The first two numbers stand for the week in the year it was made, and the other two are for the year. For example, if your tire has “1109” printed on it, then it was manufactured in the 11th week of 2009.Edmonds says that tires should not be in continual service for more than six years or, if a car was garaged for extended periods, 10 years from the manufacturer date.Tire care basicsTires are expensive, but if you maintain them correctly, most tires provide reliable service for up to 60,000 miles. Here’s how to keep your tires in good condition so you can drive safely:Buy a tire gauge and pump. Tire gauges typically cost less than . And instead of inflating at crowded gas stations, buy a battery-operated inflation pump for less than and do it at home.Locate your tire pressure level. The correct tire pressure level is usually listed on the yellow sticker often found in the driver’s side door jam.Check your tire pressure at least once a month. To get an accurate reading, check your tires in the morning before you drive anywhere. Tires heat up when you drive on them, and this throws off the inflation amount.Don’t forget your spare tire. Inflate your spare tire if you have one. Many cars now are sold without a spare but have an inflation pump and a can of tire sealant that will, in an emergency, both inflate and seal the leak in your tire.Check your temperature. For every 10 degrees the outside temperature drops, a tire’s pressure will decrease by one pound per square inch. So, if you haven’t adjusted your tire pressure since the summer, you could be riding on underinflated tires that won’t handle as well, will wear more quickly and reduce your fuel economy.Rotate your tires regularly. Doing this will make sure your tires wear evenly and last longer. Your car’s service manual recommends the number of miles you can drive between tire rotations.More From NerdWalletHow to Make Your Car Last 200,000 MilesWhen and How Often to Replace Your TiresAuto Loan Refinance Calculator: How Much Can You Save?Philip Reed writes for NerdWallet. SAN DIEGO (CNS and KGTV) - San Diego's City Council voted 6-3 Tuesday night to place restrictions on sleeping and living in vehicles on city streets and parking lots. The vehicle habitation ordinance goes into effect immediately and restricts people from living in their vehicles anywhere within 500 feet of a school or residence. It also places an overnight ban between from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. anywhere in the city, with the exception of approved lots. According to a news release from the city, the ordinance aims to address illegal dumping, public urination and drug use on city streets and in parking lots. “We are creating a balance that provides opportunities to those in need while protecting our neighborhoods from behavior that creates unsanitary conditions and hurts quality of life,” Mayor Faulconer said. “If you want to work toward finding a permanent home, we have programs that can help. We will not allow the proliferation of ‘van life’ culture that takes advantage of San Diego’s generosity and destroys community character.”The ordinance will be enforced using criteria including sleeping, bathing, meal preparation, grooming items and containers of human waste. Councilmember Monica Montgomery, who voted against the ordinance, released a statement after the vote expressing disappointment. 1315

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of senators, including California's Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, introduced a bill Thursday to address health, safety and quality-of-life concerns at private military housing around the county, including Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.Feinstein and Harris joined Virginia senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to introduce the bill. The senators began drafting the legislation after a November 2018 Reuters report detailing substandard and even dangerous living conditions at Lincoln Military Housing's privately owned complexes, including mold spores, water leaks and infestations of rodents and insects. The report also detailed multiple instances of Lincoln's slow and lack of a response to tenants complaining about living conditions. Lincoln Military Housing runs most of Camp Pendleton's 7,900 housing units.``Service members shouldn't have to worry about the health and safety of their families while protecting our country,'' Feinstein said.``Unfortunately, many living in private military housing are dealing with hazardous conditions with little or no recourse."In addition to Lincoln Military Housing's large presence in the military housing market, military members and their families living on a military base like Camp Pendleton lack the same tenant rights as civilians living on private land. Reuters found that tenant rights are generally set by contracts between the military and private housing companies or landlords.Because of this, military base residents can't press local governments to enforce health codes or withhold rent payments until repairs are made. The senators' bill would enable base commanders to withhold housing payments until officials with a housing company inspect a safety or health hazard. Housing companies would also be required to pay to relocate tenants if a hazard requires them to leave. In addition to consequences for private housing companies, the U.S. Department of Defense would be required to launch an online work order system, allowing tenants the ability to view the progress of their work order requests.``I was extraordinarily troubled by reports last year of inadequate housing conditions at Camp Pendleton and visited with families living there in order to learn more about their housing needs,'' Harris said. ``This legislation is an important step forward ensuring that we're doing everything we can to provide quality housing for our service members and their families across the country.'' 2491

SAN DIEGO — More than 100 thousand San Diegans have lost their jobs amid the coronavirus outbreak, and some of those positions have disappeared forever. But a new report from the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community College Association has identified 66 jobs as pandemic resilient.“It's an expensive place to live, this county, and so we need people to be able to have jobs that will be able to help sustain their families,” said Dr. Sunny Cooke, superintendent of the MiraCosta Community College District.Cooke said the community colleges offer an affordable way to train for positions wanted now. Each unit costs , so a typical certificate training program would cost about ,760.Additionally, the report identifies 27 jobs as middle skill, meaning they require more than a high school diploma but less than a four-year degree. It report includes an interactive list of fields, and which local community colleges offer programs related to them.“We want people to get in now, get a short term training, get into a field, stabilize their family and their lives, and then have a ladder to more, longer-term training and education that they seek and they desire,” cooke said. The identified jobs run the gamut from web developers and cyber security analysts to medical assistants, registered nurses, machinists, social service workers and biotech technicians, to name a few.In all, the report says the average entry level salary for the jobs is ,000, with room for growth. 1488

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 30-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fire hydrant in a neighborhood north of Scripps Ranch. The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday on Stonebridge Parkway near Stockwood Cove, off Pomerado Road in the Rancho Encantada neighborhood, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said. The victim was riding his 2019 Indian Scout motorcycle between 80-100 mph eastbound on Stonebridge Parkway when he lost control at a curve in the road, jumped the curb and slammed into a fire hydrant, Buttle said. The rider was ejected onto the roadway and pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
