SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Hewlett-Packard's tablet TouchPad has become the hottest consumer electronics device on Monday after HP launched a fire sale for the discontinued product line over the weekend."It was like a stampede and they went quick," a Best Buy employee in San Diego told technology news website Betanews, describing the line waiting to buy TouchPad. He said the discontinued tablet was sold out five minutes after the store opened. The device is also getting snatched up at a lighting speed online and increasingly difficult to find. The TouchPad is no longer listed on Bestbuy.com in the United States, which last week was reportedly sitting on 270,000 unsold TouchPads and was hoping HP would buy them back.On Amazon, TouchPad tops the world's largest online retailer's electronics sales list, beating out the electronic reader Kindle and iPod touch.Last Thursday, HP announced that it will completely shut down its webOS operations, specifically the TouchPad tablet and webOS phones. The 16 GB TouchPad currently is only 99.99 U.S. dollars, compared to the original price of 399 dollars. The 32 GB model, which used to be 485.99 dollars, is now priced at 149.99 dollars.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Google on Tuesday unveiled voice search for desktop computers and search-by-image, two new features allowing users to speak their search into the computer and search with the help of images.Speaking at the Internet search giant's Inside Search Event in San Francisco, Mike Cohen, head of Google's speech technology efforts, said its voice search is now available in 27 languages and dialects, an estimated coverage of around 5 billion people or two-thirds of world population.Voice search has already been available in Google's mobile search application from 2008. Adding the feature to desktops is part of Google's strategy to bring mobile innovations to its desktop search. The voice search on desktop performs similarly to voice search on smartphones -- users can click the microphone button and speak the query. It is only available via Google's Chrome browser for now.Cohen noted that the volume of Google mobile speech inputs has increased by six times in the last year. Also at the event, Google introduced search-by-image, which enables users to drag-and-drop, copy-and-paste image URL, or upload the image from the desktop into the search box. They can also use a Chrome or FireFox software extension to add images to the search.Google said the search-by-image feature will be available in most countries and regions over the next few days to Chrome users, noting that it will not collect and store any images that users use.

SHANGHAI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Baidu Inc., the largest Chinese search engine based in Beijing, said Tuesday it closed a deal that allows the company to provide download services of music from Universal Music, Warner Music and Sony Music.According to the deal signed between Baidu and One Stop China (OSC), a joint venture of the three music companies, Baidu will pay them on a per-play and per-download basis for all tracks delivered through its MP3 server, said a press release provided by Baidu.Users can have access to the authorized music free of charge, and Chinese songs, both in Mandarin and Cantonese, and some global content provided by the three music companies will be included in the catalogue.Baidu also launched a social music platform called "Baidu ting!" through which users can obtain and share some music-related information and content.Li Xinzhe, CFO of Baidu, described the deal as a "milestone" that can benefit not only Baidu and its partners but also music lovers and the privacy-stricken industry.Wang Bin, secretary general of Copyright Union of Internet Society of China, predicted that it would have a demonstrative effect on the Internet sector. In 2008, Universal, Warner and Sony Music sued Baidu for at least 63.5 million yuan (9.8 million U.S. dollars) in copyright infringement.

TAMPA, the United States, June 18 (Xinhua) -- The HIV/AIDS patients in the U.S. state of Florida are in dispute with state authorities over a proposal to impose tighter restrictions on those who qualify for drugs provided by the state's AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP).According to the proposed restrictions, individuals would have to earn less than 21,000 U.S. dollars annually to qualify for ADAP drugs. If approved by the Florida Department of Health (FDH), this would affect approximately 1,150 HIV/AIDS patients."The FDH is currently looking at the number of cost containment activities, including altering the financial eligibility for ADAP services," said FDH's press secretary Jessica Hammonds. "After soliciting public input on this matter, the department is in the final stages of evaluating the matter."The Florida ADAP program serves almost 9,500 clients, each of whom receiving 8,600 dollars in funding annually, Hammonds said. There are still another 3,482 on a waiting list.Four FDH sponsored public hearings were held in April and May on the proposal to reduce HIV/AIDS funding. Two were held in Miami, one in Tampa, and the other one was held in the state capital city of Tallahassee. Over 1,000 people attended the hearings. The issue has become so ubiquitous that it caught the attention of the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), created by the popular entertainer of the same name.

BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Google lacked evidence to support its accusations that Chinese hackers are behind the alleged cyber attacks on hundreds of its email accounts and the timing to make such accusations is evil-intentioned, Chinese experts said on Friday."Google's accusation is neither serious nor credible as it has not published any evidence that shows the hackers are from China," said Dai Yiqi, a cyber security expert with Tsinghua University.Eric Grosse, engineering director of Google's Security Team wrote on the company blog Wednesday that unidentified hacker attacks likely originated from the eastern Chinese city of Jinan, tried to collect user passwords of the Gmail accounts of hundreds of users, including senior U.S. government officials, Chinese "human rights activists" and journalists.A report released in 2009 by the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission, an organization created by the U.S. Congress, claimed that Jinan is the home of a Chinese military reconnaissance office. An anonymous cyber security expert believes, despite Google not referring to the Chinese government in the latest attack claim, the company is targeting the Chinese government by listing the victims of the attacks as those whom only the Chinese government are interested in."Both their intentions and the timing of the accusation are dubious," Dai said.Google's accusation followed on the heel of the reported Pentagon's first formal cyber strategy. The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the Pentagon concluded that computer sabotage coming from another country can count as an act of war and the United States may respond by using traditional military force.Li Shuisheng, a research fellow with a top military science academy of the People's Liberation Army, believes there are political motives behind Google's accusation.Google may well have attempted to instigate a new round of the cyber row between China and the United States, Li said.Wednesday's accusation by Google came more than a year after the company allegedly uncovered a cyber attack on its systems that it said it traced to China. In January, 2010, Google said it had been attacked by hackers supported by the Chinese government, and later announced to withdraw from Chinese mainland. The row ended up with Google redirecting Chinese mainland users to a site in Hong Kong.In such cyber attacks, it is easy to locate the IP address of hackers but hard to tell where the hackers actually are, said Dai."Hackers usually launch attacks by camouflaging their own IP addresses or controlling computers of others. Therefore, we can hardly tell the location of the hacker unless we have sufficient evidence," he said.China is one of the leading targets of cyber attacks. It has the world's largest number of computers infected with bot, a type of malware which allows a cyber attacker to gain control over the affected computer.About 13 percent of the world's computers infected with bot are in China."Without cooperation between governments, absolute security cannot be guaranteed in cyber community," said Li , adding only cooperation can ensure safe information exchange.
