SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's craft beer scene is known across the country. And it's even more evident when looking at a new ranking from the Brewers Association.The non-profit trade group that represents small and craft breweries recently released its annual list of top brewers in the U.S., based on beer sales. In January, seven breweries were ranked on RateBeer's top 100 brewers in the world list: AleSmith, Port Brewing, Stone, Modern Times, Alpine Beer, Ballast Point, and Mikkeller.The San Diego region is home to more than 130 brewhouses spanning large and small brewers, according to the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's a pre-med student at UCSD with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon, and for the last year-and-a-half, Shea Cruise has been homeless.Like so many on the UCSD campus, the senior's plate is pretty full. The neuroscience student has a rigorous course load."I was taking 20 units this quarter, full time is 12," said Cruise, 23.But her studies aren't the only thing occupying her thoughts. When classes are over and she's finished her shift as a server, Cruise must figure out where she's going to sleep.She calls her 2006 Ford Focus home. She's parked it in store lots, near the beach and in campus parking structures overnight. She qualifies for some financial aid but it's enough to cover her tuition. Shortly after transferring to the school two summers ago from Cerro Coso Community College in Ridgecrest, she decided to live in her car to save money. "I shower in the gym on campus," said Cruise.Cruise also borrows her textbooks — whatever it takes. "This was something I had to do to reach my goals. Something I was willing to sacrifice," said Cruise. Then, four weeks ago came an unexpected medical diagnosis, which will force her to take leave from her job for appointments and treatment.Cruise started a Gofundme campaign to help with tuition and other expenses, at the same time revealing a truth few on campus were aware of."It's an invisible population. Speaking about it hopefully will bring more light not to me but others in my position," said Cruise.As for her academic position, she currently has a 3.8 GPA and is determined to graduate this June."I don't look at my situation as a victim. I look at it as a lesson. It teaches me to be more empathetic toward other people. I hope to one day be able to help people," said Cruise.If she's able to graduate, she'll spend some time saving up money before applying for medical schools like Stanford, UCLA and Harvard next year. 1923

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some professors at the University of San Diego are using the impeachment inquiry public hearings as a teaching tool.Instead of listening to their professor lecture about constitutional law, students at USD watched history unfold.Sophomore Bryson Patterson says, “Although we are studying war powers now that this has come up, we get to see the constitution in action. So, we get to live it, going on which is pretty cool.”Casey Dominguez, a Political Science Professor, is allowing students to watch the impeachment inquiry hearings during class as part of today’s lesson plan, hoping to help them understand what’s happening.Dominguez adds she hopes her students, “walk away from our class feeling they are competent to figure out what’s going on. And come up with informed opinions about it.”A lesson some of her students say has already left a lasting impression on them. Charlie Young, a Junior adds, “it’s the perfect opportunity to happen in college. Where we have professors to walk us step by step through the process to understand what’s happening and help guide us through the process deeper than what the political ends would tell us.” 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six San Diego inmates had to be treated with an overdose drug this month after deputies say they were showing signs of a fentanyl overdose.The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said the overdoses happened just after 4 p.m. on Dec. 4 at San Diego Central Jail. The six inmates were given various doses of the drug Naloxone to reverse the effects of their overdoses.All inmates regained alertness and were taken to a nearby hospital for care.Deputies searched the cells of the affected inmates and discovered pills possibly laced with fentanyl, according to SDSO.The department says it's taking several approaches to stop drugs from entering jails, including x-ray body scanners, screening of visitors who may be smuggling drugs into jails, and overdose awareness and contraband detection techniques.SDSO says that about 70% to 80% of people entering their custody are using drugs at the time of arrest or have committed a crime during drug use. 974
