The larger number of faster and cheaper COVID-19 tests is offering hope.Researchers at Harvard and Brown say we need about 2 million tests a day of symptomatic people and contacts to fight the spread of the virus.When you add in testing for teachers, students, nursing home residents and staff, the number is about 4.4 million.That's around four times the amount of people being tested per day, according to the COVID Tracking Project.“So, I think it's important to make sure we actually have a goal post about where the country needs to head, because the testing manufacturers need to know what that number looks like in order to make their own business and manufacturing decisions about how to scale,” said Dr. Thomas Tsai with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.Tsai says we don't have enough capacity yet with the rapid antigen tests. He says letting the supply chain drive our guidelines for testing won't get us where we need to be.He says PCR tests that take longer to come back are more accurate, but says the antigen tests are promising because we screen more often.“Think about all the information that we’ve gleaned just from the exposure at the White House in terms of the patterns over the last several days,” said Tsai. “That kind of information, that kind of action should not just be reserved for our politicians and our athletes and celebrities. That's what all Americans deserve in terms of being about to have that information to fight the pandemic.”He says testing by itself only gives you information. It's the actions like masking and distancing that really protect you.He says the federal government needs to make testing cheaper or even free for it to work. 1700

The number of people filing for unemployment for the first time is dropping slightly. Just over 800,000 people filed last week, which is less than what was expected. You may even be happier thinking about your time off even if that just meant you stayed on your living room couch and binged the latest show,” said Salemi.Some employers, like Monster, even added mental health or additional days off this year, recognizing the extreme stress many were under.Salemi says even if you don’t have big plans for your time away from work, create some sort of framework.“It doesn't have to be rigid, but just so you feel like at the end of the day or the end of the time off, you don’t want to feel like it was for not, like its OK if you're just going to rest this whole time,” said Salemi.If you didn't get in all that paid time this year, depending on your circumstance, it’s worth asking to see if you could carry some over into next year.Now is also a good time to plan for 2021. The holiday season is here and small businesses, particularly restaurants, need all the help they can get.Many have had to close their doors a second time as coronavirus cases soar and more states implement more stringent shutdown measures.“We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do,” said Alejandro Landa, a server at his family’s diner in Denver.Last week, Landa’s family had to decrease its indoor dining capacity from 50 percent to zero as the state implemented its “code red” COVID-19 lockdown, which only allows for limited outdoor dining, while also allowing to-go and delivery orders.He says the family learned that tips on any take out orders are a big help. Most servers rely on them for most of their income.“This is all we have right now,” said Landa. “It’s a family restaurant. It’s just my mom, my two sisters, and my grandma at home. It’s all we have, and we really need to keep it up because there’s no other place to go.”Other restaurants suggest checking to see if gift cards are available. Purchasing one can give the establishment a quick influx of cash, while offering the guest a dining experience once things return to normal once more.“When our GM said we won’t be able to do dine-in for close to the rest of the year, we’re like that’s crazy talk, this is going to get better,” said Sierra Taruini, an assistant manager at an Italian Eatery. “It hasn’t gotten better. I’m a little biased but I think our food would make for a great gift.”Tarquini is one of four people on staff at diFranco’s. Typically, the bistro employs 8-10 people, but the initial and subsequent lockdowns have forced them to cut staff to barely stay profitable.Tarquini says food delivery services such as Uber Eats and Door Dash can give them additional revenue, but she suggests ordering the food from the restaurant’s website directly. Oftentimes, those carrier services charge the restaurants a small fee per order. Tarquini says by calling the restaurant directly, they can save a few additional dollars, and more menu options may be available.“The phone doesn’t stop and that has really helped me,” said Ron Robinson, owner of Gaetano’s, an upscale Italian restaurant.Robinson says he never tried takeout before COVID because his dishes are made fresh and transporting them with the same quality can be difficult. Ever since he adjusted as a way to stay in business, however, he says people have shown massive support as they order directly from him for date nights and other occasions.“I had a guy the other night come in and get eight martinis to go,” said Robinson. “You know, they buy bottles of wine to go, so every little bit helps.”Robinson says if a restaurant offers alcohol, ordering a craft cocktail to go is beneficial. He says it allows restaurants to use and order more alcohol, which can be difficult since many of their bars are closed. He also says it can create more ambiance for a special event. 2920

  

The number of people hospitalized due to a multistate E. coli outbreak linked to chopped romaine lettuce continues to grow, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.About 53 people have been reported sickened in 16 states since March 13, the CDC said. Thirty-one of those ill have been hospitalized. Five of them developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.No deaths have been reported, the CDC said.The higher number of E. coli cases have been in Pennsylvania, Idaho, New Jersey and Montana.The outbreak has also reached consumers in Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Virginia and Washington.Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. Those most at risk for E. coli illness include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.Health officials had issued a warning for residents and restaurants about chopped romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, area last week."Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten," the CDC said in a statement."The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads. At this time, ill people are not reporting whole heads or hearts of romaine," the center added.The agency recommends that people across the United States stay away from chopped romaine lettuce."Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought chopped romaine lettuce at home, including salads and salad mixes, should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away," the CDC said.  2069
