SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local brewery's decision to use compostable can holders is the latest example of San Diego companies deciding to go green.Pure Project Brewery made the change last month, giving its customers an easier way to take home 4-packs of beer while still being environmentally friendly."You have to make that decision; do I wanna do the right thing, or do I wanna do the cheap thing," says Pure Project Co-Founder Mat Robar. He says every decision his company makes takes the environmental impact into account."It costs us a good amount of money to brew beer with organic and local ingredients, and sometimes it takes a little longer. Ultimately it's the right thing to do," says Robar.The new can holders are made of recycled grain, leftover from the brewing process. They biodegrade in 200 days. And, if they wind up in the ocean by accident, they're safe for animals to eat.Pure is one of the hundreds of San Diego companies emphasizing the planet over profits.Right now, the San Diego Green Business Network lists more than 200 local companies as members.Experts say it can help build a brand, attract a loyal customer base, and also help make money in the long run."The efficiencies of going green has significant business implications," says Heather Honea, the Chair of the Marketing Department at SDSU's Fowler College of Business."If you're trying to build a brand that's meaningful for consumers, you have to speak to the things they care about. Your brand has to be associated with the things they care about," says Honea.In California, that includes environmental impact."If I'm deciding between product a and product b, I'm choosing the product that not only delivers a certain set of quality attributes but also is going to have the impact on my local community or local environment that I think is acceptable," she says.Honea also says that investments in green technology and business practices may cost a lot of money upfront, but they tend to pay themselves off in the long run. More than 100 individuals representing a variety of agencies, including the San Diego Police Department, Chula Vista Police Department, and the public defender's office attended the Arc of San Diego's "Pathways to Justice" training at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley. In recent years, law enforcement agencies from across the country have been under attack about their handling of cases involving witnesses, victims, and suspects with disabilities. Arc of San Diego hopes to bridge the understanding gap. On April 30, 2015, San Diego Police officer Neal Browder responded to a call about a man reportedly wielding a knife. He rolled into the alley with no lights, sirens, nor was he wearing a body camera. But a nearby surveillance camera caught the entire encounter. Within three seconds of opening his door, Browder fatally shot the man, Fridoon Nehad. It turned out, Nehad was an unarmed, mentally disabled man. Since this incident, the American Civil Liberties Union has questioned the officer's use of lethal force. Would this have happened if San Diego Police officers had the proper training?The Arc of San Diego hopes this never happens again, which is why they invited agencies to join their training seminar."We want to help first responders have a better understanding of what it is to interact with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities," Arc of San Diego CEO and President Anthony Desalis said.San Diego was chosen as one of four cities nationwide to run this three-pilot program. The others are Monmouth County, New Jersey, Loudoun County, Virginia, and Columbia, South Carolina. The program includes this one-day seminar where each department will create its own Disability Response Team. Finally, the departments will hire disabled individuals as intern cadets through the "Growth Through Opportunity" program. "That gives the officers at those stations a chance to interact with someone who has a disability," SDPD Sgt. Jonathan Lowe said. While his primary assignment is recruiting, he is also the Chief's Liaison for the Disabled Community. So how do you deal with a situation like Nehad's? Experts say step one is to be patient. "Don't automatically assume they are somebody who is drunk or somebody who is on drugs," Desalis said. "It may just be that it takes a moment to process what you're saying to them."Giving that person that extra moment could be the difference between life and death."No situation is ever going to be perfect in the field," Sgt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new program at three San Diego-area community colleges is hoping to bridge the gap between minority students and their teachers.The Deber Program at Mesa, Southwestern, and City colleges hopes to encourage more bilingual people to become teachers."We don't have enough people of color in the classrooms," said Laurie Lorence, Teacher Education Director at Mesa College.The program will help recruit bilingual college students who want to become teachers. It will assist them throughout their college careers with applications, transfers, testing, and mentoring."We're hoping a lot of students want to give back to their community and reach down to give them a hand up," said Lorence.Right now, there's a wide disparity between the number of minority teachers and students of color in San Diego.According to the San Diego County Office of Education, 69% of students in local schools are students of color. But only 26.3% of teachers identify themselves as teachers of color. Bridging that gap can help minority students succeed."A student can look up at the teacher and say, 'Wow, if that person's done it, maybe I can too,'" said Lorence.For Karina Vidro, one of the students already in the Deber Program, the help it provides is vital."I know where I want to be, but I don't know all the details in between," she said. "So knowing that someone is going to be there to support me in that direction is fantastic."The Deber Program is funded through a five-year grant from San Diego State University. Lorence says the first few years will focus on Hispanic and LatinX students. They plan to expand to other minority groups after that. 1662
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A passenger has tested positive for coronavirus on one of the first Caribbean cruises since the pandemic started. The case may push the start of cruising out of San Diego even further.On its maiden voyage since the pandemic, the SeaDream Cruiseliner has its first case of COVID-19. Travel writer Gene Sloan for “The Points Guy” is on that ship and now stuck in quarantine.“They’re going right now cabin to cabin and testing everyone on board,” said Sloan.The ship with 53 passengers and 66 crew set sail from Barbados on Saturday. Sloan says everyone got tested before getting on board and the trip was going well until the captain made an announcement Wednesday that someone had tested positive.All passengers were instructed to self-isolate in their staterooms.The CDC’s “No Sail Order” for ships in the United States expired Oct. 30. New guidance requires cruise lines to demonstrate widespread testing, isolation plans, and mock voyages with volunteers before being allowed to sail.That process could take several months to complete.A 7-day Holland America cruise is scheduled to leave from San Diego on Jan. 2 pending clearance from the CDC.The Port of San Diego released this statement to ABC 10News: 1234
