Belgian authorities are investigating the killing of three people in the eastern city of Liege on Tuesday as a terror attack, the country's prosecutor said. The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. ET) when an assailant stabbed two policemen from behind before stealing their service weapons and using them on the officers, Liege Prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said at a news conference on Tuesday. After killing the two police officers, the attacker continued walking through the street and opened fire on a parked vehicle, fatally wounding the driver inside, Dulieu added.According to the prosecutor, the suspect then took refuge in a local high school where he held a woman hostage. When police intervened, the man opened fire, injuring several other officers, before he was shot dead.It is not yet clear what the attacker's motive may have been, a spokesperson from the Liege prosecutor's office told CNN earlier. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said he and the government send their thoughts to the victims and their families. The Belgian Royal Palace also tweeted its sympathies following the shooting. "Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. Courage to their loved ones," the tweet read.According to CNN affiliate VTM, Michel and King Philippe of Belgium are on their way to Liege.Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said on Twitter that the country's crisis center had been monitoring the situation. The crisis center said that the students in the school were safe and that none had been injured.Liege resident Didier Deflem filmed a video allegedly showing special intervention police units shooting at the Liege attacker in front of the Waha high school.Deflem told CNN: "Police made us enter the building to protect us. The PAB (Peloton anti-banditisme, a special intervention unit of the city of Liege) intervened. The man wanted to run out and he was shot down. That's all I saw. We're still in shock."Pierre Etienne Dit Pave, who teaches French language classes nearby, told CNN he was first alerted to the attack by a "commotion in the street" and went out to investigate."At one point a policeman told me to go inside. I went back to the classroom and locked the door for a while," he said. "We heard a lot of shots. We didn't see anything because we were locked in the room. We were waiting for police to give us the clearing."Liege is Belgium's third-largest city, after Brussels and Antwerp, according to the national tourist office. For centuries, it has been an important cultural and industrial center for the country. In 2011, Liege was the scene of a grenade and gun attack that left at least 5 dead and injured more than 100.The-CNN-Wire 2699

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The head of an electronic voting company that's being targeted by allies of President Donald Trump said baseless claims that it helped flip the 2020 election for Joe Biden threaten to undermine Americans’ faith in democracy. The chief executive of Florida-based Smartmatic said in a statement Monday that the baseless claims will hurt the company's bottom line.Starting last week, the company sent letters to Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani, Fox News, Newsmax, One America News Network and others, demanding a complete retraction.Trump’s allies have maintained that software developed by Smartmatic altered the 2020 election results. Fact-checkers have debunked the far-fetched claims, while Trump’s own attorney general and cybersecurity officials have found no evidence of voter fraud.Smartmatic says the organizations and individuals in question could have easily discovered the falsity of the statements and implications made about the company by investigating their statements before publishing or speaking.“They have no evidence to support their attacks on Smartmatic because there is no evidence. This campaign was designed to defame Smartmatic and undermine legitimately conducted elections,” said Antonio Mugica, CEO of Smartmatic. “Our efforts are more than just about Smartmatic or any other company. This campaign is an attack on election systems and election workers in an effort to depress confidence in future elections and potentially counter the will of the voters, not just here, but in democracies around the world.”Though Smartmatic has designed and implemented secure election technologies in 25 countries since 2000, the company says its only involvement in the U.S. in the 2020 election was as the manufacturing partner, system integrator, and software developer for Los Angeles County’s publicly owned voting system. In its demand letters, Smartmatic says it informed the opposing organizations that it’s reserving all its legal rights and remedies, including its right to pursue defamation and disparagement claims. 2064

BERLIN, Pa. -- A National Guardsman is accused of making threats to kill Vice President Mike Pence before his visit to Pennsylvania for the annual observance of the Flight 93 crash. William Robert Dunbar, 22, of Berlin, Pennsylvania was charged Saturday with disorderly conduct and terroristic threats.According to a criminal complaint filed against Dunbar, he was on duty at the U.S. Army National Guard Training center in Richland Township when he said, “If someone pays me enough money, I will kill the vice president.”Witnesses said they contacted commanding officers after they heard Dunbar threaten to "kill" or "murder" the vice president on at least two separate occasions. The witnesses told police they were "fearful" of the threats Dunbar made and contacted their commanding officer immediately. Police said Dunbar was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for evaluation and then released into the custody of Richland Police. He is being held in the county prison in lieu of 0,000 bond.  1035

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Several Buffalo police officers have come under fire for putting tape over their name tags while patrolling a protest in the city on Tuesday.Black Lives Matter protests took place in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday. Photographs from Tuesday's demonstrations show officers covering their name tags with pieces of black tape. The Buffalo Police Department Manual requires officers to wear name tags on their "outer most garmet."Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said Wednesday that officers hiding their identities is unacceptable."Police also need to act responsibly by displaying their names and badge numbers as they're required to do," Brown said. However, both Brown and officials from the Buffalo Police Department added officers might have felt the need to hide their identity because several officers have been doxxed or had private personal information about them shared publicly on the internet. Doxxing has led to threats toward the officers and their families, officials said."Attacking officers through social media to get your points across, attacking their families, you've way crossed the boundaries," Buffalo Police Deputy Commissioner Joe Gramaglia said. The department says that it has addressed some threats toward officers and their families. Gramaglia later added that police need to abide by the manual rules and wear their nametags despite the threats. An official with the Buffalo Police Union said that the officers' decision to cover their name tags was reasonable."I don't blame them at all," the representative said. "We recently (last week) had death threats made to an officer, and the threatening individuals had information on the officers home address, wife and child. He had to move them for their protection.""We understand that we as police officers are targets, our families didn't sign up to have harm brought to them because they have a husband/father that is a police officer."Organizers of Tuesday's protest say covering nametags violates transparency laws."This just shows the type of corruption we have right here in WNY," said Darien Chandler, the founder of WNY Liberation Collective. All officers appeared to have their names displayed during Wednesday's protests.Gramaglia says the department is looking at which officers hid their name tags. Discipline could be handed down. This story was originally published by Hannah Buehler on WKBW in Buffalo. 2407
