SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cold-case murder shrouded in mystery for decades just led investigators across the country, straight to a San Diego man. In June of 1984, 15-year-old Reesa Trexler was found naked, raped and stabbed to death in her grandparents' home in Salisbury, outside Charlotte, N.C. For more than 35 years there were few answers. Last year, Trexler's younger sister, Jodie Laird, appeared on the Dr. Phil show to quash long-held speculation that she was the killer. On the show, she took and passed a polygraph test.RELATED: 40-year-old San Diego cold case solved with help of genealogical databaseThis week, an emotional scene unfolded for her and other family as Salisbury police announced the case was solved. The big break was DNA evidence uploaded to a public genealogy website, which pointed to a suspect. According to search warrants obtained by WBTV, the suspect was Curtis Edward Blair, who was still living in San Diego when he died of heart failure in 2004. His body was exhumed from his grave in North Carolina for DNA samples, before police closed the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former San Diego Unified School District student and football player is suing the district.The lawsuit filed by Jason Srouy alleges he was never informed of the potential financial and legal risks of participating and playing an organized sport if a lawsuit were to be filed alleging any negligent or other claims against the student-athlete.In 2018 Srouy and the school district were sued by a referee. The referee was injured during a 2015 game and claimed it was done on purpose. He alleged Srouy had a history of unsportsmanlike conduct known and encouraged by the coaching staff.At the time Srouy told 10News he was playing wide receiver during the game, tasked with blocking the opposing cornerback. During the block, he says the opposing player fell onto the back of the referee's legs, injuring the official.In a previous interview, Srouy said after learning of the lawsuit a school official led his family to believe the district would help him; however that was not the case. “It wasn’t on purpose, it was an accident, I didn’t mean to hurt anybody," said Srouy.Srouy’s attorney tells Team 10 he was eventually dropped from the lawsuit but not before racking incurring more than 5,000 in costs and fees.A spokesperson for the district says they can’t comment on pending litigation. 1323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car being pursued by the California Highway Patrol crashed in the Carmel Valley area early Friday morning.Around 12 a.m., CHP officers attempted to pull over a 2020 Toyota Camry for speeding on southbound Interstate5 near Del Mar Heights Road, but the driver refused to stop.Officers say the driver was traveling at 135 mph.The car tried to exit on Carmel Valley Road, but when the driver attempted to get back on the freeway, she lost control on the on-ramp and crashed.Officers took six women into custody from the car, including the driver.It's unclear why they chose to flee from CHP officers.Paramedics later responded to evaluate minor injuries. 681

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The unemployment rate in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area dropped to 7.7% in October, a drop of 1.2% from September, according to figures released Friday by the state Employment Development Department.According to the EDD, total non-farm employment in San Diego County increased by 21,500 jobs month-over-month -- from 1,386,600 to 1,408,100 -- while farm employment contracted from 9,600 to 9,500.The unemployment rate at this time last year was 3%. The region lost 106,500 non-farm jobs and 400 agricultural jobs over the year.The region's unemployment rate rose to 15% in May during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to EDD data, while data from the San Diego Association of Governments showed rates of nearly 30% unemployment in May.In September, the state's unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 10.8% the previous month, and the nation's decreased to 6.6% from 7.7%.Professional and business services led all industry sectors in month- over-month job gains at 5,200. The majority of job gains were centered in professional, scientific and technical services -- up 3,400 -- while 1,000 jobs were posted in scientific, research and developmental services.Government jobs grew by 4,300, with 2,700 in local and 2,500 in state government gains. The federal government lost 900 jobs locally.Six other industries posted month-over-month job gains: Construction gained 4,100; educational and health services 3,700; leisure and hospitality 3,200; trade, transportation and utilities 900; financial activities 600; and information 100.Mining and logging employment levels remained unchanged.The two industries to lose jobs in October were other services -- down 400 -- and manufacturing -- down 200.Comparing year-over-year, leisure and hospitality continue to top the list in jobs lost, with a total of 47,900 jobs lost since last October -- 35,200 of which came in accommodation and food services.Since the same time last year, government lost 17,100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities 13,800; other services 10,500; educational and health services 10,000; and manufacturing 6,500; financial activities 3,800; and information 3,400.Professional and business services gained 4,300 new jobs and construction grew payrolls by 2,200 year-over-year. 2294
