BUFFALO, N.Y. - Kids with autism aren't damaged. They just connect with people differently. That's what scientists Dr. Marcus Thomeer and Dr. Chris Lopata have been trying to prove through research for 20 years.“The longitudinal research on our kids shows that they have limited capacity to get and maintain a job, they have social isolation, prolonged dependence on family members,” said Dr. Lopata. They're co-directors of the Institute for Autism Research at Canisius College. After several clinical trials, they say they've found something effective to help change the lives of high-functioning children living with autism. Researchers work one-on-one with students to improve their social skills “These are kids that want to have friends, they just don’t know how to do it. They have so much to offer, but we need to make sure we’re giving them skills,” said Dr. Thomeer. They've created programs and clinical trials to focus on improving these skills. They just finished their most recent trial called "MaxOut" for kids ages 7 to 12.They're focused on maximizing? four skills:1. Social skills2. Face and emotion recognition3. Expanding their interests4. Understanding non-literal languageFor 18 weeks they worked on these social skills with 88 children, one-on-one. The results were positive.“We’re seeing our kids have friendships and have kids come over and they’re being invited to birthday parties,” said Dr. Lopata. These IAR research trials are free for the participants Researchers say these new social skills are sticking with them, weeks after they've been practiced. The pair has seen positive results in their studies in schools (SchoolMax), summer programs (SummerMax), and more. Their next step is to take this program into the child’s home (HomeMax) and eventually across the country to help millions.“We’re looking to show that these are evidence-based programs that can be effective in improving the social performance of individuals with an autism spectrum disorder,” said Dr. Thomeer. Researchers want these programs to help children everywhere If you're a parent of a child living with autism or just interested in learning more, you can visit their website by clicking here or call 716-888-2800.They're now taking applications for MaxFit, their program focusing on these skills during fitness activity. BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) — Republican supporters of President Donald Trump say he didn't know the significance to black Americans of the date and location he chose for his first campaign rally since the coronavirus pandemic. Sens. James Lankford of Oklahoma and Tim Scott of South Carolina are expressing relief that Trump has moved the rally from June 19 to June 20. June 19, also known as Juneteenth, marks the end of slavery in the U.S. The rally location, Tulsa, Oklahoma, was the scene in 1921 of one of the most severe white-on-black attacks in American history. Trump relented after an outcry. 606

BOZEMAN, MT — If you know Montana, you likely know it's beauty. From the snow in the mountains in winter to the foliage in autumn. But you probably don't think of it as an important political state. This year, however, you would be mistaken. WHY MONTANA MATTERSWhile President Donald Trump will likely easily win Montana in the presidential race, when it comes to the Senate race, things are far from certain. That's because incumbent Republican Senator Steve Daines is battling incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Bullock. The winner will represent Montana for the next six years. The race is considered by most, including the Cook Political Report, a toss-up. During a recent interview, Daines explained how this race is a toss-up. "I'm running against an incumbent Governor," Daines said near his home in Belgrade, Montana. While Daines admitted Montanans have an independent streak, he believes ultimately supporters of Trump will support his campaign. "If you sum up what I stand for it's more high paying jobs and less government," Daines said. Meanwhile, Bullock says voters may be backing Trump in Montana but they are aren't afraid to back a Democrat for Senate. "A quarter of my voters voted for Donald Trump," Bullock told Scripps' National Political Editor Joe St. George. "It's about whether somebody is going to fight for you along the way," Bullock added. WHAT'S AT STAKE FOR THE SENATECurrently, Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the United States Senate. While Republicans are expected to pick up Alabama this election, Democrats believe they are in position to take back 4 states at least. If, for instance, Democrats win Arizona, Colorado, Maine and North Carolina, depending on who is in the White House, control of the entire United States Senate will come down to Montana. Whoever controls the Senate is very important for whoever wins the White House. If one party controls both the Senate and White House, justices to the United States Supreme Court could easily be appointed. If one party controls the House, Senate and White House, far more ambitious legislation can be passed by elected officials. FUNDRAISING RECORDSThe importance of the U.S. Senate is highlighted in the record-breaking fundraising across the country. Nationwide, billions will be spent on 35 senate races this year. In South Carolina, Democrat Jamie Harrison raised a record million in just one quarter in his election against Republican Senator Lindsay Graham. Back in Montana, records are also being set. "This will be the most expensive election in Montana history," Mike Dennison, a longtime political reporter in the state, said. Dennison, who works for Scripps' Montana News Network, estimates over million will be spent on this race and on relatively few undecided voters. "All the money is fighting over about 10 percent of those voters so maybe 60,000 to 70,000 people," Dennison said. 2912

BOULDER, Colo – The City of Boulder was hit by a scam artist who allegedly hacked the email system at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, convincing the city to transfer more than ,000 into a fraudulent bank account.According to a press release from the City of Boulder, it was a "successful email and financial fraud scam."City officials stated the incident happened early last month, with the scammer gaining unauthorized access to the email system of Boulder Shelter for the Homeless by impersonating shelter staff. They said the scammer sent email requests to the city to change the bank account information used by the shelter to receive city human services funding.According to the city, it processed the change and later transferred ,333.33 to the fraudulent account as part of its routine payment to the shelter. The city contacted its bank to attempt to reverse the payment and opened a police investigation.“In 2017, the City of Boulder enhanced its financial procedures to help make financial transactions more secure,” the city wrote in a statement. “In this situation, financial procedures to verify the authenticity of the request to change bank information were not followed. The Finance Department is conducting an internal investigation related to the fraudulent activity and the failure to comply with city procedures. While the city will not comment on specific personnel matters, it will take appropriate disciplinary action up to and including termination of staff.”  Greg Harms, the executive director of the shelter, spoke with the Boulder Daily Camera about the situation. According to the article, Harms said the missing funds would have been the payment the shelter received for November as part of the contract the organization has with the city. The Daily Camera also reported the shelter contacted the city when it didn’t receive the payment, but Harms doesn’t know when the investigation began. 1953
