On the other hand, I think a parent has a deep concern that their child grows up with strong values and an appreciation of what is morally right in living one’s life.”According to the NCEA, enrollment in Catholic schools peaked in the early 1960s at 5.2 million. For the 2019-2020 school year, national enrollment was down to 1.7 million.In some places, like Lebanon, Pennsylvania, that means institutions that have served students for more than a century have made the difficult decision to close for good. In April, Lebanon Catholic School announced it would close its doors for a final time after serving students for 161 years.In a statement, Lebanon Catholic School said, “The school had faced enrollment and financial challenges for years and its continued operation was no longer sustainable by the area parishes... Even after the valiant efforts of the school and parishes during the past year and several years previously, the current and anticipated future debt for the school’s operation would significantly jeopardize the other ministries of the parishes.”Kicanas says if Catholic schools want to survive adaptation and consolidation are necessary.“I think we have to continue to be as innovative as possible in our educational outreach and programs so we really are forming our young people to contribute in the future,” said Kicanas.The National Catholic Educational Association says some Catholic schools have started offering new curriculum, and multi-language courses as a way to increase enrollment. 2540

A woman in New Jersey is facing aggravated assault charges after fracturing a woman's leg over an argument on how to wear a face mask properly, Hackensack Police Department said.Officials say the incident happened at a Staples in Hackensack.Police say Terri Thomas was shown on a surveillance video approaching another woman, who was using a cane, who had told Thomas that her mask wasn't covering her face correctly.Video then shows Thomas grabbing the victim and throwing her to the ground, officials stated.Police said the victim, who had just recently had liver transplant surgery, fractured her leg, which required her to have surgery again.Police arrested Thomas, who is set to appear in court on August 24, officials said. 738

A woman known to authorities as a prostitute is accused of setting up one of her Johns to be robbed.Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detectives say Christina Chiesa, 36, had sex with a man for money and then signaled for Robert Jones, 26, and two other men to steal from him. Surveillance video captured the victim having sex with Chiesa behind a dumpster behind a shopping plaza in suburban West Palm Beach on April 10, according to an arrest report.Jones is seen on video walking up to them, pulling out a knife, swinging it at the victim, the report states. “I’m gonna open you up, give me the money,” Jones allegedly told the victim.The victim told detectives he was able to fight off Jones until Chiesa signaled for two other men to come over. He said the men punched and cut him in the face. He said one of the wounds was so deep that he needed stitches. The suspects stole 0 out of his wallet and his beach cruiser bicycle. He said he was able to grab his wallet back from Chiesa.Days later, a deputy recognized Chiesa and Jones from the surveillance video. The two other men were not identified in the report.Chiesa was arrested on April 11 and Jones was arrested on April 13. They are being held at the Palm Beach County Jail without bond. They are facing charges of robbery and aggravated battery.Chiesa has been convicted of prostitution three times in Palm Beach County. 1435

A wildfire burning in Arizona, just northeast of the Valley, is now the most massive fire actively burning in the country, according to officials.The wildfire has already demolished more than 114,000 acres, and it is just five percent contained, as of Thursday morning.The good news is no homes nor businesses have been destroyed, but some worry it is just a matter of time, as evacuations have been implemented in multiple towns.Fire crews say the wildfire has spread so rapidly and is difficult to contain because of the heat, low humidity, terrain, and high winds.The threat snuck up on Tonto Basin homeowners like Robyn Hill."I really wasn’t prepared for it. I thought the fire was too far away, and you are just kind of in disbelief," said Hill, who got the evacuation order Monday.Hill said she rushed home from her hair salon business in Payson once the alert came across her phone.She packed up the RV with her husband and two dogs, and they quickly left town."So when you got two hours to get your stuff and go. It would help if you were a little more prepared," she said.
