BEIJING, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has called for strengthening efforts in ecological and environmental protection as the country strives for economic restructuring and improving people's livelihoods.Li made the remarks Monday at a meeting on the application of research results on China's environment. According to Minister of Environmental Protection Zhou Shengxian, during another meeting on Tuesday, the sulfur dioxide index is expected to drop 14 percent in 2010 compared with the 2005 level.Also, the index of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, is expected to decrease 12 percent.China's 11th five-year program set out to reduce COD and sulfur dioxide levels by 10 percent over this period.However, Li stressed that China faced more pressure in environmental protection than any country in the world, since it was a developing nation striving for modernization and with a huge population of 1.3 billion.China should innovate its development mode and endeavor to make the two, development and environmental protection, promote each other, he noted.Li said the country should set up a people-oriented conception in environmental protection efforts, and carry out major projects regarding sewage disposal, waste processing and water environment in urban areas.Efforts would also be devoted to prevent and treat rural area's pollution problems and ensure the safety of drinking water and food, Li said.Li called for improving related laws and regulations and fully completing the government's responsibility in the environmental protection sector.

Local media cited doctors as saying Sean Lien's brain was not injured and his injury would not endanger his life.A spokeswoman of the hospital where Sean Lien was treated said he was sober-minded when he was sent to the hospital. CHENGDU, Nov. 12 (Xinhua)-- The reconstruction of the Erwang Temple, which was damaged in the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008, is expected to finish on Nov. 18 in southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local heritage protection authorities on Friday.Sitting in the Yulei Mountains in Dujiangyan City, Erwang Temple was built over 2,000 years ago to commemorate Li Bing and his son, the two engineers who built the Dujiangyan irrigation system, which was listed as a World Heritage site in 2000.The temple will soon be partially open for visitors and the final touches are being added to the water supply, drainage system and lavatories in these areas, said Fan Tuoyu, deputy chief of the Dujiangyan Cultural Relics Administration.The entire temple will be opened after the Chinese Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 3, 2011, said Fan.The reconstruction project kicked off in June, 2008 with an investment of 126 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars) from the central budget.The temple was seriously damaged in the Wenchuan earthquake with almost all the ancient buildings having collapsed.

  

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese officials and Communist Party cadres have been warned against financial violations and extravagance in the name of New Year celebrations.The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Ministry of Supervision have issued a circular, asking officials and cadres to be self-disciplined and practice frugality during the holiday season.Party officials must not accept gifts in any form, said the circular, which offers a list of prohibited items and services that "could influence the fairness of official duty," such as attending banquets, and expenses-paid travels and entertainment.The holiday season of 2011 starts from New Year's day and continues into the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year, which falls on February 3.The Chinese tradition of presenting gifts to family members and friends during the Lunar New Year has been extended to sending gifts to officials, which poses a challenge to the country's anti-corruption efforts.The circular also warned officials to avoid extravagance, and prohibited them from spending sprees using public money for personal gains.Instead, the limited public money and resources should be spent on developing the economy and improving people's livelihoods, it said.Further, the circular told discipline inspection authorities at all levels to seriously crack down on any violations of the law and disciplines.

  

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's urban fixed asset investment rose 24.9 percent in the first 11 months year on year to hit 21.07 trillion yuan (3.19 trillion U.S. dollars), China's statistics authority said Saturday.The growth rate was 0.5 percentage points higher than that during the first ten months, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The urban investment in the primary, secondary and tertiary industries rose by 16.6 percent, 22.7 percent and 26.9 percent respectively.During the first 11 months, investment in central government projects rose 10.2 percent year on year to 1.68 trillion yuan, while investment in local government projects was up 26.4 percent to reach 19.39 trillion yuan, according to the NBS figures.Property development investment was up 36.5 percent year on year to reach 4.27 trillion yuan, the figures showed.During the same period, state-owned and state-controlled investment reached 8.75 trillion yuan, up 19 percent from a year earlier.Investment in railway constructions and transportation jumped 25.3 percent to 582.2 billion yuan, while investment in petroleum and gas exploration climbed 5.8 percent to 219.4 billion yuan for the first 11 months.
