EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon is working to put up a handful of so-called emergency sleeping cabins on their property.“They are different from tiny homes,” Pastor Rolland Slade said, pointing out that they don’t have running water or a kitchen. “They are essentially a shelter for someone living in homelessness to actually sleep behind a locked close door and be comfortable.”Slade says they have bathrooms on the property as well as a kitchen. They are looking to install a shower or perhaps bring them in through outside organizations.The emergency cabins are 144 sq feet, of which 96 square feet is livable space.“The village we are looking to build is going to focus on veteran women with children who are living in homelessness in El Cajon,” Slade says.Slade says they will find their clients through organizations that work with the homeless. The homes are not meant to be permanent housing, and families will be allowed to stay for 90 days.The church is working with a group called Amikas, as well as the city.El Cajon city officials have given the pilot program the green light through December 31, 2023. However, city officials say “permits are required, and the “emergency housing” must be operated by an organization experienced/proficient.”There is one cabin on the property. EL CAJON (CNS) - A 49-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of fatally shooting a 31-year-old man in an unincorporated area near El Cajon.Daniel Christopher Allen, a resident of that unincorporated area, was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murdering James Owen who also lived in unincorporated El Cajon, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The shooting was reported in the 6000 block of Stallion Oaks Road, southeast of Dehesa Road and northeast of the Sycuan Resort, around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said.Before deputies arrived, an acquaintance of Owen drove him about a mile and a half from the shooting scene, Seiver said.Deputies stopped the vehicle on Stallion Oaks near Dehesa and found Owen inside suffering from a gunshot wound. It was not immediately clear if Allen was the driver.Owen was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. 921
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Over two dozen people were displaced Sunday night after a fire ripped through an apartment building on Bradley Avenue in El Cajon. The fire started on the first floor of the building, inside of a unit that was being renovated. Witnesses told 10News they heard a commotion and people screaming there was a fire. Several neighbors say they stepped in to help using buckets of water to put out the flames. Firefighters say the fire appeared to have started inside the walls of the apartment with a plumbers torch that was being used during the renovation. Fire officials say the fire damaged four of the units, displacing 21 adults and 12 children. The Red Cross is providing shelter for the night for those displaced. One of the men working inside the apartment suffered a minor burn on his left hand but told 10News he was okay. 864
Dramatic moments in a San Bernardino courtroom today as a prosecutor slammed a sledgehammer onto a table. He was simulating what he says is how a Fallbrook family of four was murdered in 2010. Charles Merritt is accused of killing his business partner, Joseph McStay, his wife Summer and their two young sons Giani and Joe Jr. The prosecution says Merritt was being sidelined from the business and owed thousands of dollars to McStay. The defense countered in their closing arguments that the prosecution focused on trying Merritt’s character and not the actual facts of the murder. The defense told jurors the circumstantial case produced no evidence tying their client to the family’s violent deaths. The prosecution told jurors they didn’t have to prove how, where or when the murders took place, only that Merritt committed them. The McStays disappeared from their Fallbrook home in early February 2010. Days after they were last seen, the family’s SUV was found abandoned at a strip mall parking lot in San Ysidro.In 2013, the bodies of the family members were found in the Mojave Desert, near Victorville. Prosecutors said the family died from blunt-force trauma to their heads. Authorities found a sledgehammer, believed to be the murder weapon, in one of the graves.Merritt was arrested in connection with the killings in November 2014 after sufficient evidence linking him to the case, including DNA, was discovered.Authorities alleged Merritt killed the family members inside their home and then buried them in the desert. Merritt also tried to paint over the crime scene, according to authorities.Merritt, 61, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and is being held without bail.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case. 1758
